Well, I started the dang theory, so perhaps I should postulate a prototype... I'll assert alliteration as it's an asset of arg-ers... Ok, I'm done... sorry.. that kind of day...

Ahem...

Quote:
Dear Margaret Efendi,

My name is (whoever sends this letter), and I had been one of the people trying to assist Dana with the whole internet Hotmail problem you've been encountering. While we haven't made much headway in that, (as I'm sure you know,) Dana had grown close to all of us helping, as she is quite the endearing person (as I'm sure you know)! Well, the point I write this letter, is because another person, who we call Princess (that's the on screen name, that is) has been trying to contact Dana, but since she doesn't speak english too well, we've been trying to assist her. However, we know that Dana went on a trip to China to get away for a while. (Good for her, by the way, and good for you for enabling her to take the trip! I wish I was as close to my aunt!) But since she's gone, we obviously have no way to let her know that Princess is looking to speak to her. I know it's an odd request, but is there any way you could forward a message to Dana, or let us know some way I or the Princess could speak to her? (I think because of distance/language barriers, email is the only way the Princess could directly speak to Dana, but I think we could get a message from Princess to pass to you, to in turn, pass to Dana...) Anyway, I know it's an odd request, but I understand how Dana wants her privacy right now, and we want to respect that, which is why we're involving you. (This way, we don't know where she is and she gets to stay "on holiday", and we still can still get important messages to her.) Please let me know, one way or the other, so I can tell Princess whether she should wait until Dana gets back or not. (Although, between you and me, I feel a sense of urgency with Princess trying to get a message to Dana... Maybe it's just because I'm a guy and don't understand this whole girl connection, but Princess specifically asked if we could help her get in contact with Dana, so make of it what you will, I suppose!) Anyway, thanks for your time, and I'll be eagerly awaiting your reply! (Also, when do you think to have your honey business back up again, cuz I'd love to purchase some honey! (Your description makes it sound so great compared to the store stuff I normally get!)

Sincerely,
(whoever sends the letter)

P.S. -- as an update, while we still are not able to correct the problem with your email account, we are working on it still, tirelessly, to figure out what's going on. We still aren't sure if it is in fact a widespread hotmail problem, or if it's something more specific to your account, but we're still trying! =) We will keep you updated, if Dana doesn't herself!

It's not a quote, but I figured something this large of text, maybe I should set it apart somehow...[/quote]

dunno if that's too necessary. also it might be a bit repetative. i think if we're a bit more to the point maybe it'll help? lemme peek at it more i guess and i'll see what i can come up with.

Friends and humans arn't to the point. We like small talk. IT will make AM feel safer around us. I like the letter. But who will send it? I could, I've got some stamps, but it may make sense if the return address is closer to AM? Someone from California?

The letter sounds like a good idea. The pms had to give that address for some reason. I would maybe just like to see a bit more proof that we are Dana's friends in the letter. Knowing about Aunt Margaret's hotmail problem may be enough, but maybe a mention of the twing sound Dana likes, or something like that will win AM's trust enough to send possible contact information.

The key to being trusted is to not look like you're trying to be trusted. Now, I'm not reccomending we rob Aunt Margaret, but I am reccomending we not have to "convince" her we know Dana. If she doesn't trust us, at least she could choose option A which is (I'll pass a letter through me, but I won't directly give you info)... Or if she does trust us, she gives us direct access to message Dana. Either way, Aunt M. is in control, and that's the key to trust (feeling like you are in control)

In other words, me likey puddin.

i think asking for honey was a great touch. i want honey for my tea, darnit!

i dunno, i just saw the male thing as a dismissal and i woulda been a bit weirded out by it if i read it. i think just maybe because it would seem better if we did understand the need to have that type of connection with someone and thats why we're trying to help this person out with such urgency. if we didn't understand it, why would we both helping? it's gotta be more than just our good samaritanship showing through. i dunno if that makes a difference, but again - s'how i feel.

just don't wanna scare poor aunty. hehe. everyone likes accendotes but i wanna make sure our main idea doesn't get muddled somehow. compliments of both dana and her aunt are also rad, who doesn't like to be complimented. someone should try out the recipe and then tell her we liked it. more comfort there?

mhmm...puddin'

[edit: cause i left some old quote code in there i didn't end up using.]

Two things:

1) I think the letter's great, however, it needs to be shorter. I would suggest writing something on a nice bee card, saying "Hi, we're Dana's friends who helped her with the E-mail problem. If it's all right, could you tell us how to get in touch with her? We really miss her..." and then add a P.S. saying, "tell us when you get your business up and running again, we'd love to buy some honey!" Make it sound more personable; talking about the Princess in long-winded paragraphs sounds... kinda creepy o_o Just make it friendlier and shorter is my advice.

2) We oughta get this out as soon as possible. I have an awful feeling that, when "this medium will metastasize," it will catch up to Dana in China ("metastasize" meaning spread). Maybe we ought to say that we worried about Dana when she took off so suddenly (Aunt M must be worried as well), and that we'd like to get her a letter to let her know that we care.

The other reason that I want to get this out soon is that I'm worried we might not get around to it if we don't...

--Cherry

(Oh, and if nobody objects, I'd like to do this. I'll go to the store and pick up a nice bee card.)

I don't object Cherry. Besides, no one ever said that only one letter had to go out, if you feel like sending one, go right ahead.

All right then! I will ensure that it goes out in tomorrow's mail. If anybody wants me to change or add anything, speak now.

Here's my Plan of Action:

1) Send the card to Margaret. (I'll scan it in first and show it to y'all.) It will not mention the Princess or anything else about our little hobby.

2) If, in the unlikely event that I get contact information for Dana, I will send her a letter. I think the best approach is to be completely straight and upfront about it; Lord knows she's had too much stress to handle a "well, I know you're on vacation BUT" approach. I will tell her that in (however many days) the "medium will metastasize," or spread, and that we must prevent this at any cost as it is a hostile program. I will tell her that our only lead is a computer program with (we hope) the means to stop the Operator, but she needs to come into contact with Dana first. My goal, however unrealistic, is contact between Dana and the Princess before the "medium will metastasize" countdown ends.

I don't even want to know what will happen when that countdown ends. I have a gut feeling that that will be the next time we hear about our friend Dana... and if we don't work quickly, it won't be good.

(okay, after thinking about it... sending a letter to San Francisco, getting a reply from San Francisco, sending a letter to China... I'd be lucky if it all went down before August 24. But I've gotta try, you know? I'll put my E-mail address in the card.)

Hmm... I live in California, I could send it. However, I live 2 hours away from where they supposebly (sp?) live. I've heard people say that I should go there, but what would I do once I get there; and I don't know the address. What should I do? And has anyone tried this, yet?

The wiki says that the street address leads to a UPS office, so I don't really see much good in physically going there. If you have the free time, and don't mind a two-hour trip, it couldn't hurt to check the place out for bulletins or posters or anything of that sort.

I think sending a message though snail mail was the best choice for right now. Although I don't see Margaret sending a return response through the mail, if anything, I think she would try her hand at posted a new blog on Dana's blogger. So I'd keep an eye on that in the comming days.

Dana mentioned something about Aunt Margaret being a little shy of technology -- rarely checking her e-mail, having Dana do her web site, that sort of thing -- so I wouldn't expect to see her on a blog. Just my $0.02.

Cherry Cotton: Good work! Did you by any chance have the opportunity to scan in your card before sending it? If so, I'm sure we'd love to see it. (I would, anyway.)
