[SPEC] Backs to the sea, Battle of Marathon

I have a speculation specifically regarding the Castaway text:

Quote:
A man that seemed noble, classical and pure. A sailor with Odysseus. He told stories about soldiers caught waist deep in water, facing the enemy, their backs to the Sea.

Now, read this from here:

Quote:
Taking advantage of the fact that the Persians had their backs to the sea, the Greek thinned their centre to cover the longer enemy line and attacked.

This refers to the Battle of Marathon from 490 BC.

Interesting, no?

And to avoid someone pointing out the obvious, yes, before Halo there was Marathon.

(Thanks also go to inky, Emily, and Tablesaw.)

A reference, maybe.

However, Bungie has repeatedly stated that Marathon and Halo exist in difference universes. As this game has been pretty clearly set in the universe of Halo, any direct relation to Marathon is unlikely. When the Covenant ships fly past Mars in Halo 2 they will almost certainly find Demios intact.

And please don't start speculating about time travel or wormholes or any other way to connect the universes. The horse is dead, let it rot.

But we do have to speculate how a Halo AI in deep space, and from the future, can end up inside a computer in San Francisco in 2004. How are we going to do that without time travel and wormholes?

Put your SPECs on for now, and suppose we do have both. Marathon and Halo may be parallel universes, but those don't seem so far from each other anymore. And Durandal may have used his powers to escape into the Halo universe. What if the Castaway was Durandal, and he messed with the time-space continuum somehow, resulting in Melissa's current predicament?

Well, that makes absolutely no sense, as the Castaway was human, said he was married, and drank, while Melissa could not, due to being a hologram.

Unless Durandal has somehow entered a parallel dimension where he's actually a human naval officer (NO! DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT POSSIBLY GOING THERE), then that idea can be scrubbed safely, along with any theories stringing together the Pathways Into Darkness and/or Marathon storylines into this.

wild speculation

wild speculation, is there a direct reference to the castaway being human

maybe another ai? the drinking its a metaphorical

the marriage - to the ships

.. wouldn't explain why she felt real tho (pointing to him treating her as another human)

unless she defines realism, as the feel of true emotions, love etc...

I think more likely, the Castaway, the sailor with Odysseus, was talking about the battle of Troy (the Iliad). Where the spartans fought with their backs against the sea, when Odysseus' ruse saved the day. (Trojan Horse ~= Buoys of Sound to confuse the enemy) after which Odysseus began his journey home (the Odyssey), and finds himself physically, and in name referred to, as an unknown Castaway, on a foreign shore.

Not to mention the third party involved in the Battle of Marathon--the Spartans. Wink
