[META] We are being watched Okay, here this goes:
If anyone has seen my post, I embedded an image into an email to ladybee777 and Dana, put up a webserver, and went to sleep.
In the morning, I had hits to that image from one ip: 63.207.101.109
I told nobody else about it, couldn't have been found, and with only 1 hit for it, it had to be one of them.
Now, here's where it gets interesting
cyanogen confirms that the SAME ip has hit images on his site about ILB, which have only been posted in IRC
<cyanogen> 07272004-access.log:63.207.101.109 - - [27/Jul/2004:14:48:44 -0400] "GET /ilb HTTP/1.1" 301 382 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; YComp 5.0.0.0)"
63.207.101.109 - - [28/Jul/2004:09:25:22 -0700] "GET /BEEWITHH.GIF HTTP/1.1" 200 6789
Now, I don't know if it's dynamic or not, could be.. who knows.. but I definitely know it was someone from the ARG who hit my image.
Tinfoil hats, anyone?

That's really neat. I'm new here too, but I think (not 100% sure) that the title of this topic should include the [SPEC] designation.
Too bad I'm useless with network traces, or I might have something constructive to add.

Of course we're being watched. This is all a marketing ploy, and they want to check up as thoroughly as possible how much buzz they've caused, thus checking any peripheral sites about the phenomenon for traffic.
Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if they ran WHOIS checks on your information to make sure that it all isn't two or three guys making web pages.
Whatever marketing team is behing this is probably happier than pigs in filth.

i don't know if "they're on to us" is really an appropriate term here, i'm sure they have someone checking this board once an hour, and "big" days, like Tuesday, its constant
heck, i'd feel slighted if they WEREN'T watching the boards, i'd be like "don't you care Bungie!?!?!?!?"

Not that I disagree too much. But scaring them away from chat isn't too great an idea right

why do you all think this is out of game? It would fit in w/ the idea that the entity is trying to get out.
fun fun.

oooooooooooooooooooooooh!!!!!
i've been thinking! how freakin cool would this be:
1) we get evidence that Melissa has hacked some software company's website
2) we go to the in-game site, poke around, find some minor evidence of her
3) there's a link on there for a free download of their new, neato-cool screensaver, or mini-game, or chat program, or something, so we all download it
4) within a week, strange messages from a certain AI begin appearing on our desktops, and our own webcam pics start to appear on the hacked sites!

It's definitely an ADSL connection. It was up when I pinged it, so I suspect whoever has that computer is just being good about shutting down or sleeping when not using it.
I don't know what PacBell's policy is for rotating dynamic ADSL IPs, so it's hard to tell if it is dynamic or static. I know my ISP actually assigned my user id to my IP in the host name. Very possible PB doesn't have such a policy though.
Tried making a web connection, but they're not running a personal web service. Would have been amusing if they were.
I'd say they didn't expect this sort of tactic, so I think all of this is firmly out of game. If they did expect something like this, they would have been using remote desktop software to do all the mail reading and monitoring from a game server, which would have been off of a hosted IP, and not someone's DSL line.
There's a policy suggestion for any game-runner who might come across this.

I think trying to hack their box would be as frustrating to the game ops as trying to hack the vmail, blog acct, gmail, and hotmail.
Though that would have been a phenomenal puzzle if they were running a clue on port 80 on that box.
