Re: [spec] Missing letters a clue?

asevenson wrote:
Been following this thread for a few days now, being new to the forum and ARGS in general. Something strikes me as puzzle-ish in the mbox.txt contents. Specifically several words are missing one letter, all from Unknown's lowercase.

It can be but I did not intended it that way. Very Happy

Sorry, that joke was irresistible to me. Anyway, I think the mbox file is just that and the errors are only errors. The message hidden in Lucrezia's mail, if put in by Unknow at all, was there for a reason. I don't think she would have needed then (in the past) to put in a message for years (how many years?) later. That if the mbox.txt file is really from Unknown being held in a clinic. If not then you may be right.

I passed the photographs to a friend that is very good with image manipulation programs. He said the couples are different (he did some tricks with histograms) in about 20 pixels each, but we weren't unable to extract any information from them.

Cyfre: can you please provide us all correspondance with Lucrezia? Maybe it's time to start drafting a timeline of the events. Maybe better understanding the story will help with the puzzles too. And I am thinking about tricking Lucrezia into a chat (IRC on some unfiction channel?) session but it seems she only communicates with Cyfre. (As an aftertought, isn't that strange? )

Yup Cyfre buddy, it looks like you're our official representative with Lucrezia. Maybe we can think of a way that you can find out the secret behind those pictures through a series of strategic questions...maybe even find out the deal with Ame tapping on her window? The one window in the attic that her family lived in right? The rain tapping? Excuse me if this doesn't make much sense, I've had qutie a bit of wine Embarassed

Latest e-mail from Lucrezia:

lucky to be far from this place. and from your emails.
sorry but what you write somehow hurts me. i had bad
dreams last two nights. and other things to.
sometimes i am so tired. please, don't write me
anymore.

sorry again,
lucrezia

---------------

My response:

Lucrezia,

I apologize if i've made you feel bad in any way. Please understand, the only reason i continued writing you is the fact that you seem like a nice person, and i don't get the chance to talk to someone from Italy every day. It was never my intention to make you feel bad. I'll honor your request and not e-mail you anymore if that's what you want. Good luck with your architecture, you seem like a smart girl with a good head on your shoulders. I know you'll be just fine. Time heals all wounds? At any rate, if you ever feel like making a friend in America, you know my e-mail address.

Bye,
Nathan

-------------

"lucky to be far from this place" (far from paris, the attic where she lived with her parents and sister i'm guessing, since that is what we were talking about), "and from your emails" (?).

"I had bad dreams last two nights, and other things too" (something to think about)

"sometimes i am so tired" (sounds like someone who has something weighing heavily on her mind from the past)

"please, don't write me anymore." (obvious)

Well, i'm kind of disappointed she asked me not to write her anymore. I think the only reason i've been chosen as the contact is because i've been friendly and seemingly not interested in her past or anything that had to do with a game. As long as i didn't remind her about any of that, everything seemed ok. The unfortunate part about my role and character is the fact that i have to honor the wish to not write her anymore. I think if i kept writing her, kind of trying to push to get her to keep talking to me, that'd get a negative response.

Of course, i think the next e-mail i get from that address will be from a different mind-set, whether that's a different person or a different personality. I'll post immediately when i get a response, which i suspect will be soon. This is nothing new, Lucrezia saying one thing but not committing to it. I don't think she'll stop writing.

I like the idea of getting her into a public chat. Maybe we can all go undercover as a "Support Group" for people who lost loved ones who run weekly meetings in IRC ? If we could pull it off, maybe we could squeeze more info out of her about her past ?

I think I made a bit of a breakthrough...

Hi Guys,

So I was sitting here at work just enjoying my lunch break when I had a total brainstorm. I downloaded all the images from Lucrezia's Orkut page and the ones from the helpme.zip. I paired them up the way joknatson said on September the 4th.

I opened a pair of the images up and switched between viewing the first and the second ... like a flipbook. The eye can pick up subtle differences this way (I used to use that trick to solve those 'Spot the Difference' puzzles when I was a kid.)

Anyway, flipping the images reveals a localized section containing dots. I thought steganography at first and me and a close friend (who has been lurking in the unfiction forums these last couple of weeks) investigated it but got nothing. Then I noticed that each difference had a dot in the top left and one in the bottom right. I used these to align the image differences and lo and behold ... a new image appeared.

I think it would be naive to think of this as a random image ... looks alot like another number to me. Anyone else see: 10011514223027?

I will clean it up when I get home ... like I said, I am at work and don't have access to anything advanced like photoshop. I am sure I can get a clearer image.

Any thoughts?

Robert

P.S. Some of that noise is from the bitmap to jpg conversion by Imaging

Shocked Amazing work! I'm seeing a pattern here, 2 halves making a whole. Same was true for the barcode, and the split personalities theme too. I wonder if this applies somehow to these two 13 digit numbers.

As promised, here is a slightly better image (not so noisy) ... done with photoshop.

two thirteen digit numbers, total of 26 digits. Isn't that the same number of letters in the alphabet?

2nd number length?

Nice Job! I had noticed the dots but figured it was a byproduct of the stegging process.

Trout me, but, isn't the hypothetical number 14 digits long?
How do the two numbers fit together I wonder?

Wohoo !! Another number one to look at and melt my brain over !!! Cool

Awesome find !!! We'll have to do that with all the identical pics now.

Actually, I see the number on the end as a 2.. not a 7.

Making our mystery number... 10011514221022

Hopefully this won't remain as elusive as that barcode number. Wink

Well, when I first looked at the new image I read it as 10011614221022 with a "6", not a "5". I fear we'll have to work on two or three different numbers if we don't obtain an even better image.. Confused

I blew the picture up with Photoshop. You're right.. That is a six and not a five. Looks like our mystery number is 10011614221022

The source of Lucrezia's photos...

Hi Guys,

I was thinking about what other leads we have since I am getting frustrated with trying to decrypt arbitrary numbers. I wondered if the photos themselves could be a lead ... an indication of where this story is taking place. I have located the source of 5 of the 6 photos. All of these images came from doing a Google image search on the word 'chalet' and looking at all the resulting photos. Please note that it is highly possible that number 6 was there too and that I missed it.

I figure ... even if these pictures aren't a lead, I might be able to use the originals (presumably of higher quality that the ones provided by Lucrezia) to extract the hidden text better. After all, wasn't the caption on Lucrezia's first photo: 'don't like how orkut blurs'

Sorry - I meant the hidden _NUMBER_ - I wish it was text! HAHAHA!

Anyone have any thoughts?

Oh yeah ... wherever possible, I include the name of the chalet and the geographic location.

If you split it in to groups of two, then simply substitute the numbers for letters(a=1, b=2, etc) you get:
10 01 16 14 22 10 22
japnvjv

the japn is interesting concidering that Ame is Japanese for rain.
