I can't believe we missed this...

Hi Guys,

One more mystery solved. My friend and I followed something that had been bugging me for a little while. On the placeholder page at www.geocities.com/tolmhbe, I had always been puzzled by the word Xome and the javascript error. So my friend and I took a look at the source ... I was searching for the error but he looked at it for a few minutes and said that the capitalization is off ... and he was correct. Look at the attached source:

I have added the asterisks to point out what I am talking about

line 06:
<ht*M*l><head>

line 11:
<*B*ody bgc*O*lor="ffffff">

line 19:
<tr><td colspan=2><font face=arial size=+1><b>tolmhbe's *X*ome page</b></fon*T*></td></tr>

line 29:
href="javascript:Help('http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/geo/conte*XT*/context-03.html')"><b>click here</b></a>.

And there you have it ... MBOXTXT ...

What does this tell us. The way I see it, two things:

1. We totally missed the boat first time around. We didn't get it within a reasonable period of time, so our mystery speaker decided to slap us with something much more obvious.

2. Most likely, 0822162710052 DOES NOT refer to mboxtxt - Not that we were ever sure it did, but the though had certainly crossed my mind, and the knowledge that it refers to something else will definitely change my approach to decryption.

Kudos go out to my buddy on this one.

Robert

Nice work, Robert. I haven't received any communication from Lucrezia since she asked me to stop writing her. Obviously, i've stopped writing her. Perhaps i'll get an e-mail at some point in the future, but for now i'm finished with that aspect. I'm not good with decoding or anything like that, so i probably won't be much use. But i'll continue to do what little i can. Who knows, maybe i'll suddenly get smart.

Thanks, Cyfre

Hey. The more heads on the puzzle, the faster we figure it out.

Following the spec that 'Ame' was the Japanese word for rain (instead of the French word for friend, it could be a lot of things, really), I've been playing around with the possibility the number strings could represent words in Japanese since the hirigana syllabary has over a hundred syllables when you include the diacritics and vowel combos. No joy so far, though.

FYI, for my purposes I've broken down the strings like this;

08 22 16 27 100 52 and 10 01 16 14 22 10 22

Well, I remembered that the pictures of Chalet's came in a directory called 'nine', so applied mod 9 decryption to the number that we got from the pics...not the most fruitful thing in my opinion, but I'll let you guys decide...

10011614221022 = 1, 1, 7, 5, 13, 1, 13 = aagemam

Then I did the same thing to the barcode number...

0822162710052 = 8, 13, 7, 18, 1, 5, 2 = hmgraeb

Now I put the letters together, alternating the letters each time (first letter from the barcode numbers, second letter from the picture numbers, third letter from the barcode numbers...etc.), and that =

hamaggreameabm

Now I tried rearranging the letters, and I came up with

"A hammer bag game"

Am I stupid or just trying to hard?

P.S. aagemam (from above) can be rearranged to say ame maga which is some sort of Japanese jewelry (necklace charm) made of amethyst. Looks like a drop of water or something.

Oog:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I think that the PM's running this game are either laughing their butts off at us for not being able to figure this stuff out, or they are ripping their hair out trying to figure out how to get us to solve the stuff.

Mm.. I think the PM are laughing and keeping in character. In one of her last emails to Cyfre Lucrezia said she'd "already booked a flight for the 13th". And we got no new mails from her or Unknown after that date. She's away and I suppose all we have is the number riddle, at least until she returns (if she ever returns.)

forgive me if this has been covered - but has anyone figured what the cubes referance (in one of the emails) is about?
i did try and read all the posts here.

14 + 13 (digits) is 27 digits --- this is a cube 3 by 3 by 3

probably rubbish and no doubt it was solved weeks ago --- if so ill hide myself and just lurk Smile

err - thinkin about it it is probly a good idea to disregard that Embarassed

however i still think cubes must refer to something

Wild Speculation...

Hi Guys,

I have been trying to crack those numbers for days and I've been getting nowhere.

When I read the post about cubes I didn't think too much about it because I had tried treating my alphabet as a cube a little while ago and got nowhere. I was talking with a buddy of mine and he asked why I didn't think it would be a cube and I said something like ... "The closest cube to the size of the English alphabet is 27 (64 being the next). Assuming that the numbers were co-ordinates, that would mean only 3 digits per dimension. And we appear to be using the digits 0-8."

Then an idea just smacked me in the face.

I am now about to start some wild speculation so bear with me. I will describe my train of thought in detail in case someone else can go further with it. A question with an obvious answer popped into my head. How do children learn to count? On their fingers. But how many fingers does our mystery person have? '9'? And wasn't '9' the number of that folder in the helpme.zip file?

If you use the base 9 number system for something, you only use the digits 0-8 ... Is it possible that these numbers have been given to us in base 9, but intended for use in another base? Like base 10?

0822162710052 in base 9 = 258870114020 in base 10
10011614221022 in base 9 = 2546005354247 in base 10

Like I said, this is all just speculation. And I wish I had more to share than just numbers. But I had to throw this out there in case someone can take this further. I will continue trying to decode these four numbers and see if we get anywhere.

Robert

This probably is not helpful at all, but the spiders under the skin sensation is often described by patients on certain drugs used to treat extreme personality disorders, including multiple personalities.

Oh and the missing finger combined with the japanese nationality has a cultural significance. These days only practiced by the yakuza, there is ritual of atonement which involves sacrificing part of yourself and offering it to a superior, it is usualy a finger that is sacrificed.

Neither of those comments will probably help at all though, and I am probably just rambling....

I've read that about the Yakuza. Don't they lose a finger for each failure also ? I would imagine that intense trauma (if it were constant enough) like getting ones fingers removed may be enough to trigger multiple personality disorders. Usually though, the disorder grows over time and there is always some kind of intense or repetative trauma associated with it. It's an idea to look at.. for now.. I'm going to give those numbers another look.

This is true. But also in French, ame (written with a ^ over the a) is the word for soul, which is mentioned in the initial e-mail. I am not saying the the [spec] on the Japanese translation is mislaid, but that the French could also be valid.

Now to figure out the trick to the numbers...

A Hammer Bag Game?

Maybe the PM's are trying to tell us we're as dumb as a bag of hammers.

I think we need to get someone who Lucrezia trusts to start sending her emails again. We simply need more information to break these numbers.

We have to figure out a way to get her talking to us again without scaring her off.
