[SOLVED] EMAIL from UrbanMythology 8/20/04 - *Not* Spam

Received from importantinfoSPLATurbanmythology.net - 12:47am 8/20/04:

Quote:
Everyone please read this and be made aware with our little ones.

TO ALL PARENTS, SITTERS and GRANDPARENTS! Even if you do not have little
kids pass this one on to everyone you can think of. You never know who you
might save by sending this e-mail! Please take the time and forward this to
any friend who has children, grandchildren, or anyone that knows children.
THANKS!

I wanted to share something that happened while shopping at Sam's Club. A
mother was leaning over looking for meat and turned around to find her 4
year-old daughter was missing, she started calling her daughter with no
luck. We asked a man who worked at Sam's to announce it over the loud
speaker for Katie. He did, and, let me say, he immediately walked right
past me when I asked and went to a pole where there was a phone. He made an
announcement for all the doors and gates to be locked a code something (In
K-Mart, and some other stores, this is called a Code ADAM (See note below),
so they locked all the doors at once.

This took all of 3 minutes after the man was asked to do this. They found
the little girl 5 minutes later in a bathroom stall. Her head was half
shaved, and she was dressed in her underwear with a bag of clothes, a
razor, and wig sitting on the floor beside her to make her look different.
Whoever this person was, took the little girl, brought her into the
bathroom, shaved half her head, undressed her in a matter of less than 10
minutes. This makes me shake to no end. Please keep a close eye on your
kids when in big places where it's easy for you to get separated. It only
took a few minutes to do all of this-another 5 minutes and she would have
been out the door...I am still in shock some sick person could do this, let
alone in a matter of minutes. The days are over when our little ones could
run rampant all over the place and nothing worse would happen than them
annoying people.

The little girl is fine. Thank God for fast workers who didn't take any
chances. Code ADAM is named after the son of John Walsh of the TV show
America's Most Wanted. ADAM WALSH was abducted from the toy section of a
store in Florida and murdered. BE SURE TO FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE SO THEY
KNOW JUST HOW SICK PEOPLE ARE OUT THERE!

The story is old, but... those lucky dates look suspicious to anyone else? Do we have our first hidden message from Amanda?

Solved the puzzle.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The numbers before the / meant which paragraph to look at. The numbers after the / meant which letter/number of the paragraph to copy. The message reads (spaces added manually) "What is important is not always readily apparent!

Re: [NEW] Email from UrbanMythology.com 8/20/04 - Not Spam

Anyone else notice the way CAPITAL LETTERS are used to make certain words stand out in STARK CONTRAST from the rest of the message? Those words are...

Just think how EXCITING it would be, and how WELL-RESPECTED I could become if those were relevent, or some kinda clue!

NICE!
Smooth work.

Doesn't this basically non-helpful message let us know that we've been completely missing something else that the website has been trying to get us to see? Embarassed

Good work (although is this in the right forum? I nearly went to post something about it in Interaction/Puzzles before I searched and found this)

So what does it mean? We've missed something, that's clear. But from where? Urbanmythology.net, I guess.. argh. I have been kinda skimming over the newest myths as they've not seemed important.

I'm totally confused now. Anyone got any good ideas?

{SPEC}

This post ties UM.net and DH sites together.

This means Amanda always knew who the person was that gave her the reality TV myth info and in fact is working with that person OR IS that person. (JC/ED/ETC)

As far as what we missed, this weeks one about the guy cutting his fingers off is the way that strikes me as the odd one out.

I think I SPEC'd the JC/ED/AMANDA connection in chat a week or so ago - and that lead to the anagraming exercise on Amanda's name (this was an amusing diversion for about an hour or so).

When I sent my snailmail address to 'jc', I asked "Are you Ed?".

And for those of you who are wondering why *you* didn't get this email? It showed up in the spam box. If you have a good spam blocker, it may not have reached you.

oops, mine was in the spam filtered folder. Mine's dated Jul 24th and was a response to one of the urban myths I submitted on the site.

I'm on a Mexican Radio!

This may be one of those puzzels we labeled as SOLVED a little too early.

What is it refering to? Is there something we are missing or is it just a general message to stay on our collective toes?

If I'm reading the above post by Varin correctly this e-mail was sent out for the first time late last month. Were we being alerted to something or is it just a response to her e-mail?

herichon, did you also receive this as a response to an e-mail?

If we are suppossed to be looking for something in particular, I would think that whatever it was would be near the date we first received the message.

Not exactly, no. I am on the UrbanMythology.com mailing list. But other than my initial introductory letter to Amanda I have not corresponded with (or even paid much attention to) UM.

For what it's worth, since there's spec about connections between DH and UM now, I have been emailing JC / secretsSPLATdreadhouse.com periodically. I was one of the folks who sent a mailing address to secrets based on the HTML in the SEE puzzle, for example. I have also corresponded with TT, DP, and CMH.

Can we determine who else got this message and when? Roll call anyone?

Might be an idea. Smile

I received the message at the same time as you, herichon. I am on UM's mailing list but never submitted a myth. However I had a short email correspondance with Amanda about random things, nothing terribly significant. I asked her about Dream Projector after she was mentioned in their newsletter. This was ages ago though; I haven't contacted her recently.

"Ed" sent us the email that pointed us at um.n, which pointed us to both jc and dreamprojector in the beginning. but then we were being emailed about updates, and those updates were awfully cryptic. but since the puzzles weren't obvious, and since the information in the "myths" was just ambiguous, we mostly ignored it.

i think that it is almost certain that there are messages for us on that site somewhere. already once we know that we were pointed to this site for more information on the dread house mystery, and now we are being pointed there again with a coded message.

i think we drop what we are doing and dig in to um.n

If I got it, I didn't read through my spam folder well enough and deleted it a couple days ago. The thing is, I haven't gotten a confirmation letter about being on the update list for UrbanMythology, either . . . so I dunno.

Just for completeness I ran the email thru spammimic, but it seems there was nothing there to decode.
