I'd say that you can expect to wait until Nov. 9th for Halo 2. I believe from what I've read here myself that the Aug. 24th date refers to the arg mystery, and that many Halo fans eager to get their hands on the sequel created the hype and Aug. 24th ties to Halo. To answer your other question (if anyone else has a different method they use chime in) just right click save the image, then open it in a text editing program like notepad. Although I think most of the hidden messages in the picture files have been discovered.

You can also add ".txt" to the end of the filename when you save it, which (in Windoze, anyway) will default it to a text file that opens in Notepad.

I've noticed that it's a lot harder if you don't have XP to open the program in Notepad, just since you have to actually open notepad, and then actually select the "open file..." from the "FILE" menu, but make certain (if you saved the file as a .jpg instead of .txt, which I would actually reccomend, so you're not confusing yourself what was a picture on the site, etc...) that you look for "all files" instead of those that are text files, i.e.-those ending in .txt. But yeah, that's it. Just remember where you save stuff on your computer...
In XP it's really easy, since you just right click, and "open with..." and probably have to choose from a list, but then you choose notepad, and you're there... yeah... so that's probably more than needed to be said about this, but I'm bored, so there...

this is junk, and that's ok, cuz not all the pictures have messages! But it looks like you're doing it right... but if it's a message or a phrase, you'll see it... (but honestly, most if not all of the phrases and sentences have already been found, but it's cool to find it yourself!) But if you want to see where what you find fits into the storyline so far, check out the Wiki...

Looks about right, actually. Now, if you try the same thing with one of the corrupted images -- DON'T post it here, please -- you'll see a snippet or two of recognizable text mixed in with the rest of that stuff. Remember that the images are not always corrupted on every page load.

"not all pictures have messages"
Ok I'm just bored to death and yes I've read much of the wiki.
So why is it distorted if it doesn't have a message.
BTW wasn't looking for anything new just trying out the process.

or you can download that great strings utility linked to in the Wiki .
then just run: strings -a -n 5 somefile
and bam! it does the work for you.
(info on strings.exe and download link )

It shouldn't be -- I thought all the distorted images had text. Has anyone else seen a distorted image with no apparent embedded text?

Well if the anagram and acronym guesswork is correct, the game is saying that Auust 24th will be the release of the Halo 2 single player demo. Just spec for now, but spec that doesn't sound too far off to me.

My question is: do we need yet another thread to discuss whether or not there's a Halo demo coming out? Probably not, but we do need...

Read the rest of the posts, it's explaining how to check for text in pictures.

Only the distorted killer.jpg pictures had hidden text. The distorted pictures of Aunt Margaret, Dana, bees, etc. all have nothing.

Perhaps I should distinguish something. When you say "distorted," do you mean that the image itself appears corrupted (in which case it really ought to have a hidden snippet of text or two)? Or do you mean simply that the image is the wrong size, e.g. stretched or shrunk?
