FTP sites Is there a thread already for FTP sites associatd with in-game sites? I thought I had seen something but I couldn't find it just now... I apologize if I am duplicating this.
Anyway. I think the FTP sites for urbanhunt.com and tomorrowstalk.com changed recently. If I remember right, they used to look like this (this clip taken from ftp.deadpoems.com):
Quote:
Connected to deadpoems.com.
220---------- Welcome to Pure-FTPd [privsep] [TLS] ----------
220-You are user number 1 of 50 allowed.
220-Local time is now 23:46. Server port: 21.
220 You will be disconnected after 5 minutes of inactivity.
User (deadpoems.com:(none)):
Now when I connect to ftp.urbanhunt.com or ftp.tomorrowstalk.com, I get this:
Quote:
Connected to urbanhunt.com.
220-This computer system is for authorized users only. Individuals using this
system without authority or in excess of their authority are subject to
having all their activities on this system monitored and recorded or
examined by any authorized person, including law enforcement, as system
personnel deem appropriate. In the course of monitoring individuals
improperly using the system or in the course of system maintenance, the
activities of authorized users may also be monitored and recorded. Any
material so recorded may be disclosed as appropriate. Anyone using this
system consents to these terms.
220 ProFTPD 1.2.9 Server (ProFTPD) [server14.eowh.com]
User (urbanhunt.com:(none)):
Am I right in thinking this changed? Did anyone notice when?
Anyone see any significance in this legalese?

I'd say that looks like a stop sign.

Looks as if they're practically screaming at us not to try to FTP them!

Maybe so. But if you're running a server and you don't want people to FTP into it, you quite simply disable FTP access. Very very simple. Why take the time to set up FTP access to begin with, and then post a lengthy legal paragraph to tell people not to use it, when you could just turn it off? And if it's really behind the curtain, why don't all in-game sites have similar disclaimers? Why only those associated with TT?
Also note that, in apparent contradiction to their request that only authorized users log into the system, anonymous logins are still enabled on both urbanhunt.com and tomorrowstalk.com. Anonymous FTP access is practically a gold-plated invitation to walk in and poke around, and again, a very simple matter to disable, if you don't want people in your FTP site.

it's simpler than that, they switched from pure-ftp to proftpd. proftpd has that blurb at the beginning when you install it for the first time.

I believe they're using a commercial hosting service, which would of course have FTP enabled for webmasters to upload files.
In other words, don't mess with it- it's not a puzzle, and you don't want to get in trouble for hacking.

And we surely don't want the game to stop because of tricks like you had in mind. Listen people, chill a bit, please. Don't go searching for stuff "behind the curtain". Don'"t hack stuff, don't keep phoning people. When we need to do such a thing it will be stated quite CLEARLY. Really, just relax and don't let it take over your life! Just wait...

Jesus, folks... it's not as if no ARG has ever used an FTP site... and it's not as if we don't have potential names and passwords...
Sheesh. Sorry I brought it up. Maybe a mod should just lock this thread before anyone else flips out.

I am not flipping out herichon and I'm not pointing fingers, really, I'm not targeting you. It's just that a lot of people are talking about such things. And true, FTP sites could be used but then we would be nudged to it don't you think?

herichon, it's still good to bring up since it will serve as a reminder not to poke the curtain. If we're to hit up their FTP sites we'd know it.
Thank you all for your lively discussion
I won't bother locking the thread unless someone goes Ninja.

Someday I'll tell y'all the story about an ARG FTP puzzle gone very, very wrong.

/me holds her cursor over the lock thread....but isn't ready to hit it quite yet.
Yup, I agree with avoiding the hacking and stuff, but we can still discuss it.
