Halo AI's don't have real bodies. They use holographic projections to create the illusion of being. What GunSmithCat is saying is that the Princess could possibly be an AI in CHARGE of the cryopod, not the person actually inside it.

I think you've got the right idea, $.05F. I don't think we need to get too hung up on the background of the Haloverse; so far, it's the frame, not the canvas, of this painting. In any case, you can always read the original Halo's script at halo.bungie.org (and see Bungie at its narrative best on the Marathon Story Page).

Re: your question, Haloverse AIs act as you would expect them to -- computer software without bodies (though Haloverse AIs, unlike Marathon ones, can display themselves holographically). The speculation that the Princess is either in cryosleep or is guarding a human in cryosleep comes from some assumptions made through the Halo novels, but speculation is all it is right now.

I really don't think that the Haunted Apiary is going to require people to have played the game, read the books, and checked the designers' .plan files on a regular basis. It obviously would help to know something of the Halo story but, compared to Bungie's other works (anything Marathon-related in particular), the Halo story is pretty simplistic and uninteresting ("OMG the halo iz a waepon!!1!!!!"). In other words, there's not *much* there there, to paraphrase, so with the transcripts at halo.bungie.org, it should only take you several minutes to get the salient points.

Righty-o.

And I admit there's some assumptions involved, but I keep finding the connections. I'm going to try and update some pages on the wiki to collect a new proposed timeline leading to ILB.

And I agree that I doubt the whole puzzle is going to require knowledge of the Haloverse to solve. As someone mentioned, we mere people aren't really supposed to have such knowledge in the premise (unless someone can show me an example where Dana cops to the existence of the game Halo - then I think it might be fair game).

But I also doubt Bungie is going to give us confirmations on everything. I think they are going to leave some things ambigous, and some which may only get pieced together with some background info. No proof, but Bungie is the company that hasn't even copped to who the main character of the Marathon series was, not to mention the real meaning of that trilogy's ending.

It's little pedantic, but I have to say, I'm not sure. I thought the ability to spin off copies was something that only Cortana could do. I.E. "dumb" AIs don't have the creativity and self-regonizance to make copies of themselves.

Also, I'm pretty sure the copies would be "dumb" AIs, if AIs at all. Like you said, limited functions.

Sorry I couldn't help out the spec much better then this little note.

I took up your advice and checked out those pages. They did help a bit to nail down some of the characters who's names I've seen flying around here, and to give me a better understanding of what's up for earth from the Covenant and the Flood (not sure which is worse, but I THINK I'd pick the former if I had to make a choice Razz ).

Anyway, I recomend to anyone else unfamiliar with the Halo storyline to read the pages there. Like babbler said, it only took a few minutes, and it was worth it. Alot easier than trying to dig up copies of the Halo books, or running out and buying an XBox and a copy of Halo. Laughing

Oh, and thanks to everyone's input here. I think at the present time, this is about the only thread that has any 'meat' to it on the boards, what with all the junk about XP SP2 and the continual sidelines into ihatebees and ilovebeer. It's nice to hear from some people who actually seem to understand both ARGs and Halo.

Waiting for Tuesday......

It is something only Cortana could do, according to the FS novel. Cortana's copies did sort of wind up being "dumb" AI's, so to speak, because of the initial Covenant AI code taking over and practically forcing the other Cortana copies to reproduce over and over, causing extreme degradation.

I'm sure it's been quoted before, but:
pg. 196 wrote:
The copying code was extremely convoluted; in fact, it took up more than two thirds of the Covenent AI's processor-memory space. It was dark with functions that ran deep to the core. It spread dendritic fingers through the system, like a cancer that had metastasized throughout the AI's entire body.

There is a far-fetched possibility that this "copying" procedure was produced by the recovered crystal in the latter portion of First Strike and that there were two event paths intersecting the crystal in some way, in similar vein to the events that transpired on Reach in conjunction with Halo. (See page 248).

But again, that's just thinking outside of the box and most people are determined that the game isn't as linked to Halo as some might hope. Wink

Here is an attempt at translating the Widow's Story into a chronology of SPDR invading the ILB:

http://bees.netninja.com/wiki/index.php?title=Timeline_Theories-Story

My least favorite bit is the top. I'm beginning to doubt that the castle in this story refers to CASTLE (the ONI base). I think everything in this story may be metaphor for pieces of software and rarely actual physical items.
