Let me just point out that sending around emails talking about embassies and what can happen to them, and which sound real-world-ish, is way less innocent-sounding than rabid Halo fans discussing bees and AIs and blown up space ships. The NSA email sniffers look for some things, you know.
Be circumspect, or better still make sure it's clear you are playing a game!
Now who's paranoid?
I use real-world-ish references to large scale destruction in web communications all the time, and I don't even have a tap on my lines yet, let alone NSA agents kicking in my door.
Besides, this is definitely a game. There's no reason to fret on that issue.

Well, the initilal emails were to a few known regulars to this forum.
I assume that means it is an ARG?

Yep, that image is definitely stegged. Nothing new in it though, just the same text as previously posted. The passphrase is:

I just received this also. Actually, if you dont mind, I sent an email saying I was YOUR friend and also wanted to help him! hehe
I have never tryed it, but I will work on destegging it here at work.
Heheheheh, that's ok, I'll claim you. I think that with this sort of apparent launch they were depending on the initial recipients to spread the word around to other potential players.

I guess you can't use the cameflage program? It would not take that password...

The LJ has been updated:

I visited the unforums...thank you so much addlepated, you're my hero now.
With such a great community working on this matter, I'm confident it will be resolved quickly.
Just to dispel some negative sentiments I saw...when the FBI set up Carnivore and the NSA adopted the Echelon system so that our agents can inspect the threat level of people using the internet, they ran into the immediate problem of an extremely large stream of data and not enough man power to analyze it properly.
I could broadcast live on MSN.com that I want to decapitate (insert politician's name here) and they couldn't convict me of any wrong doing. I might get harassed a bit, but being an asshole is still legal. So, even if this email threat is real, the NSA/FBI could really care less because they want more definitive proof than some yahoo talking shit over the internet.
Oddly enough, I don't think I mentioned UF to him. Did anyone else?

He sent me the initial email (I have no idea why) and I came here to post this thread, but you beat me too it. So, when I responded, asking for the flag picture, I linked him here as well.
The timing's a bit screwy though, he updated his journal fairly soon after I posted here saying something similar. Me thinks he's watching us closely.

I noticed something in his LJ. I looked at the title of his latest post (the one addlepated posted) and it said "I saw you in a reflection..." anyone heard this in a quote before? i had a quick look at google and i couldnt find anything about it

He merely makes my point. No you couldn't be convicted of anything. But you would be noticed. Also not a good thing. I prefer not to be on the lists at NSA as someone who discusses [unnamed potential threat against the security of the US or an ally]. Even in a game. Which is pretending to be "real."

I sent Phantomhack an email, and he replied attaching the latest picture as mentioned in his latest journal entry. See attached. Haven't had much of a chance to look at it yet, so if anyone's a steg expert, feel free to get on it
His email to me:
Quote:
Many thanks for joining the cause, I'm starting to feel a lot of love in the world.
Attached is the latest picture, it's of some rather important looking building, but I don't know what it is, where it is and although I'm sure the picture is stegged like the previous one, I haven't cracked the code. You're the first one I've sent this out to, so maybe you'll be the first one to break this one, as well. Cheers, mate Phantom

Here's that photo you wanted.

Once again, everyone will have to email me to get the photo, I don't have anywhere to host the photo and I won't just send it out, you might think it's a virus and delete it!
In any event, I haven't taken a crack at breaking the steg on this one, so I'll update when I can and I'm sure that somebody else will crack it first.
EDIT - I've removed the file, download Noir's version instead as it seems something must have gone wrong in my upload or something >_<

I'll be back in a few days, maybe.
Don't worry too much about me, just work on that picture.
Well, it looks like he will be gone for a while. This is the latest post in his LJ.
Since the message in the first email had a hidden message in it ("the passphrase is the subject line") i tryed the subject line for this picture, but to no avail, so i tryed googling it which brought up a bunch of sites, but as its a pretty common phrase i dont think i found anything of much use.

Don't know about anyone else, but stegdetect came up negative on this pic for me.

Yep, I agree. It's even more apparent if you zoom in on the picture, it just looks... weird. Not sure exactly what's been done to it. I tried various passphrases with no success.. but if it comes up negative in stegdetect then I guess there must be something else to find...?

My version comes up positive in stegdetect, if the version you guys are using is bad, maybe mine will work.

First post, be gentle Okay, I don't want to create a panic or anything, but does anyone besides me see the similarities between this and Syzyzgy? "down the rabbit hole"?
Dinah?
Alice?
Seems to be more than coincidence that two different, unknown args would use references to the same piece of literature, especially if one started so soon after the hype of the other'd died down a bit.
