Hmmmm. The library theory is interesting...especially since part of the newly discovered text today consists of quotes from some of the "great books" of philosophy, religion, and (especially) science.

Do you think there might be a connection between the points and the quotes?

Cities with three or more locations in cluster (may not include exurb areas):
Quote:

9: SEATTLE, WA; WASHINGTON, DC

8: PORTLAND, OR; LAFAYETTE, LA

7: SEDALIA, MO; NEW YORK, NY; SALT LAKE CITY, UT

6: BOULDER, CO

5: CHICAGO, IL; LOS ANGELES, CA

4: SAN DIEGO, CA; SAN FRANCISCO, CA; KISSIMMEE, FL; BERKELEY, CA

3: BALTIMORE, MD; BELLINGHAM, WA; KENT, WA

(Edit: N.B., I doubt that this is an answer, but some -- not all -- addresses match with radio stations. Combined with the Operator's brief mention of a crystal radio, I wondered if that had something to do with the locations. So far seems to be idle spec only, but it's another twist to flop.)

I like the wi-fi access point theory mentioned earlier.

I did some research and came up with this page. (Note the MS bits!). From there there is a link to PlaceLabs from which you can download software that I think does GPS over wi-fi. But the important thing on this site is the coverage maps, which gives long-lat coords for hundreds of wi-fi access points (for example here for access points in berkeley). I looked up a couple and they seem to be pretty close...

Location: Far Far Away. Nowhere Near You. Really.

Here's my more detailed results for the DC area:

From 2 different places on the list, these two are the same location:

38.8918 -77.0261 - 10th & Constitution Ave NW, WASHINGTON, DC, 20004

38.8917 -77.0260 - Museum of Natural History

38.8889 -77.0244 - 8th and Jefferson Dr SW, WASHINGTON, DC, 20004 (Smithsonian - on the street outside the Arts & Industries building of the Smithsonian -- Smithsonian is a lot of buildings -- or maybe the merry-go-round across the street there)

38.8810 -77.1116 - 4292 9th St N, ARLINGTON, VA, 22203 (9th and N. Stuart St., a block over from Ballston Common mall, most likely a condo building or maybe offices)

38.9085 -77.0639 - 1462 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Washington DC 20007 (Wisconsin just above O St. could be residential or commercial or both)

38.9025 -77.0618 - K Street NW, Washington DC 20007 (a block west of the next one and a little more north/not on the water - Georgetown DC - office or condo building, or possibly on the raised road that rides above K Street along this stretch - the Whitehurst Freeway - no pedestrians allowed I ain't looking there)

38.9018 -77.0603 - 901 Thomas Jefferson St NW, WASHINGTON, DC, 20007 (Georgetown DC waterfront development - nice condos, office buildings, restaurants)

38.8083 -77.0873 - * 38.808294, -77.087324 - Duke Street and South Quaker Lane, ALEXANDRIA, VA, 22314 (there's a McDonald's on the corner, some random business across from that, a fire station and some low rise office buildings across Duke St.)

38.8430 -77.0425 - * 38.843444, -77.043733 | Air Cargo Rd, ARLINGTON, VA, 22202 (Reagan National Airport - could be a parking area - I can check if accessible)

38.7230 -77.1203 - 8602 Lukens Ln, ALEXANDRIA, VA, 22309 (corner of Lukens Lane and Richmond Hwy/Route 1 - mostly commercial along there; I can check)

38.9033 -77.0326 - 1412 L St Nw, WASHINGTON, DC, 20005

38.9101 -77.0326 - 1421 Church St NW, WASHINGTON, DC, 20005

(if either of the two foregoing are anywhere near where someone works, it will be freaky)

38.7730 -77.1715 - Frontier Dr, SPRINGFIELD, VA, 22150 (Perimeter road for Springfield Mall - to the east are smaller plazas with Home Depot and Borders and other stores small and large; to the west is the mall property - parking lots surrounding). Extremely unlikely to be a pay phone there.

38.6450 -77.2994 - Parking Lot, WOODBRIDGE, VA, 22192 (Potomac Mills Mall -- noted earlier - on a street near parking lots and walmart)

38.6397 -77.2960 - Gideon Dr, WOODBRIDGE, VA, 22192 (Potomac Mills -- near some small plazas)

38.8425 -77.2803 - Route 236, FAIRFAX, VA, 22031

I am about to leave work, which is why I am asking this instead of f'inggooglingit, but aren't there wifi blogs where people post about where they've found hotspots? Perhaps those might be a nice resource, to back up this possibility ...

What remains to be seen, though: Um, so what if there's a wifi hotspot? What are we going to do with it? We're obviously already connected, so why a wifi?

What about visible cameras from the locations posted above?

Earlier someone in this thread there was a comment on that there was a number of people (at that time anyway) who said that these locations were close to them. Of the more than 1,000 emails that Dana received on August 6 she posted a few in her blog and one said:
Quote:
"It knows our names, our addresses, it's going to reach out and touch us and guess what happens then? You'll have to go further than China to get away from this one, Dana. When it metastasizes, we're *all* going to get a good long look at it."

Although not technically our real names - unless your email address that you sent emails to either Dana or Margaret and the name your computer has is your real name - it does know you as whatever name you have on these things. Part of the information that can be collected by web servers is IP addresses and Windows' computer name. Also address might not be a street address but an IP address and the routers that packets travel through, communication equipment is everywhere and sometimes (like in the case of wi-fi) are placed on the top of large buildings or in places one would not really expect to find them.

I do realize that this might be trouty and thus a huge faux pas but I am very intrigued by this game and thought I would throw in a thought that I had whilst reading this thread.

Potomac Mills - as gohoos said, the northern point in the Potomac Mills map is on a street, near a traffic light - parking lots on all sides; nearest stores are Walmart/Sams Club on one side (50+ yards away - big parking lots) and the main Potomac Mills mall building on the other side equally far away - not sure what stores are inside the closest entrance there. No phone, no library, no chinese restaurant.

Not sure if you can find this out specifically, but since you had this muc detailed information, do you know if there are any cameras in sight at this point? Maybe a camera on the traffic lights themselves?

Not many camera intersections in the area in general; highly unlikely out there. That's more of an urban thing. Potomac Mills ain't urban.

Already found, and looks like Wishi places it at 2914

BEFORE YOU MAKE ANY SPECULATION ABOUT A HALO 2 PROMOTION TOUR OR VIDEO GAME DEALER CHART, consider this:

Row 4, Column 1 gives the coordinates: 39.4958 -77.6531 you can find a map of those coordinates here... As you will see when you zoom in and enlarge the map, this is in the middle of what appears to be a field... It's not on any road or street, it's just there... The closest civilization is Boonsboro, which has a population of 2,790... Just to compare, I live in a small town in Mississippi, and small as it is, it has a population of 24,082...

Now why would Bungie plan a promotional stop on their Halo 2 tour in the bustling metropolis of Boonsboro, MD? Scratch that, OUTSIDE OF Boonsboro, MD? There are some here who I'm sure would entertain the thought that the Bungie execs sit back and throw darts at a map of the US to decide where to promote their games, or maybe that Bungie just had such devoted fans living in the woods 4 miles outside of Boonsboro that they had to plan a stop there, but the fact of the matter is that game promotion trips are strateigically planned for highly populated areas that will achieve a high impact on their game sales... Numerous factors are taken into account, like average age, income, video game sales, lack of PS2 owners (heh)... And I'm afraid Boonsboro wouldn't be on the A-list in any of these categories.

So take a step back, think logically, or if you refuse to do so, shut the hell up. We'll be glad to entertain your hypothesiis when they have at least some supporting evidence...
