Yeah Bellebet i think it may be a central point .. one other thing we should look at is any DATA storage centers in these areas i know that in Palo Alto which came up three times there are quite a few areas that host data storage . i may be barking up the wrong tree but worth a look ..

Im 30 mins from SF and 10 mins for palo alto im gonna do some digging and let yall know what i come up with .

Location: Is not Chicago

One of the spots lands right in front of the Sears Tower, main entrance. To my recollection, there is no payphone there, but I will go look on my break, just to make sure.

I am fairly confident these won't be geocache sites, either, since if someone tried something at this particular location, they'd probably be arrested for violating our sweet, sweet Homeland Security.

(eta: there's payphones in the lobby, but, um, a whole bank of them. also, many payphones in chicago won't accept incoming calls - I wonder if these do? hrm.)

I don't think it is payphones (or at least not all of them). One of the points is off of the west coast in the water. The sat. photo shows nothing but water there.

This is one of the weirder ones I saw in the few I looked at. I looked at the ones closest to me once gohoss posted the map. I live in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, and looked at the one located near St. Cloud.
It is:
45.5533 -94.2096
Here's a link:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?latlongtype=decimal&latitude=45.5533&longitude=-94.2096
Zoom in all the way and you'll see it is on a divider in the middle of a divided street in the middle of Waite Park. It doesn't seem like that would be a payphone.
I'm feeling like a road trip tonight...maybe.

The point in the water could be someone playing the game from a research vessel. A friend of mine goes out into the Pacific fairly often, and they have email access. I don't have an ip location utility, so I'm not sure if any of the IP addresses that show up in her headers get plotted in the ocean.

if it's spread, it did so across the internet. not sure why it gave us these coordinates, but i doubt they're physical. go to them if you want... but i would be surprised if you found anything.

Muahahahaha, famous last words. Maybe.

Although, it's true that we don't have much more to go on than these numbers.

Using the website provided by cedmond, you put the entirety of the text from one of these lines, and you get a map.

Doing it right now, in fact. Give me time, there's lots of numbers.

reversed longitude

Not sure if it amounts to much, but I reversed all the longitudes (changed them from negative to positive) and they all fall in China. Seems a little coincidental.
