Recall this bit from the blog
My first instinct: ask Hotmail to kill the account entirely. But then someone calling him (her?) self "xnbomb" sent me a very persuasive email that made me rethink things...

I was wondering when someone would bring that up Smile .

It's true, this is all my fault, I gave Dana bad advice Embarassed .

I should have persuaded her to pull the plug (or get someone else to pull it elsewhere) and end this business before it got interesting Laughing .

Can you modify that java applet to give all distances from San Francisco (Dana's House, preferably) to all 220 points?

Judging by what I remember from THE FALL OF REACH, they were using kilometres.

I could be wrong, though.

Also, if you look at the indo website...the km milage in km adds up to 3*7 maybe this is an indication to go with KM.

What is it with you and sevens? I doubt this is ANY relevance at all Smile

Nah, I'm vegetarian. But still, I'm starting to see the number of "omg it adds up to se7en!11111!1!!!" posts just become silly. Threes and sevens are a theme, subtle hints, a fugue underlying the story and site; not something puzzle related IMHO. After all, the chances of arbitrary digits adding up to seven are one in nine (assuming they aren't all zero)...

(And, incidentally, not aimed at anyone specific, what exactly is "sesevenen" meant to mean?)

I second this request. I was just thinking about this - I'm glad I found this thread.

I would like to see if maybe there is a connection between either Dana's home or the site in Texas (more promising, see below) to each point, or each pair of points, to work this puzzle further.

These "Axons" are branching out, right? I think the points might have more meaning when viewed from another central point, rather than to each other.

Why Texas? Well, most websites of this type would be hosted somewhere by a company, not in the home. And this would also explain the lack of points in Texas -- if the AI is trying to get out, to escape, it would try to go as far as possible away, right?

Anyhow, I'd like to see a localtion list from the texas address to each location, and from Dana's home to each. Maybe these distances (or the pairs, or the differences in the pairs?) has significance.

I've been WAY too busy with work to do any data analysis or in-depth reading of the threads, but I'm curious about something which may have been overlooked so far. All of the thoughts concerning the coordinates -- either the entire list, or considered pairwise -- have been centered on distances.

However, as everyone remembers from math, two points define a vector, and although magnitude (distance) is one property of a vector, DIRECTION is the other. Has anyone done an analysis of the coordinates to find out if there is some pattern or meaning to the heading from one to the other?

Possible ingame tie-ins...

From the wiki, from the various pages of the story...

Quote:
Trying to orient

Tricky. Can't seem to focus. Need to start on the easy ones, like "up". Move on to the compass later.

Up. Up. ...Damn it.

You'd think "up" wouldn't be too much to ask. It's not like nor-nor-east or something.

I need to find out where I am. Also who, but that might be less important. It's possible the two things are related.

Stars, I need stars. I was always a fine sailor; they said my navigation was celestial.

I think I am a fallen star. I should wish on myself. Please let me go home, please let me go home, please let me go home, please let me go home, please please please please please please please ple

trying to find direction

MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY

FIELD EXPEDIENT DIRECTION FINDING

"Find a straight stick about a meter long and stand it upright on fairly level upright ground. Mark the tip of the shadow cast by the stick: wait 15 minutes: mark the shadow again. Draw a line from the first mark through the second and some way beyond. Stand with your left foot on the first mark and your right on the end of the line. In the northern hemisphere, you will now be facing north, and can recall the other directions by their relationship to north. In the south, contrariwise."

Hm.

No stick. No sun.

trying to find south

MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY

"At night in the Earth's southern hemisphere, run an imaginary line along the axis of the Southern Cross to extend out about five times the length of that axis. Any landmark directly under that imaginary point will be in the general direction of south."

Any landmark.

Sandmark.

anything

anything

nothing

So, we have stars, triangulation of north, and stars. Can anyone think of a way to apply this to the points? I think there were folks in the 30-page thread looking at star maps without success. What if you made lines perpindicular to the pairs of cooridnates? As for the southern cross stuff, you got me.

And, also from the wiki, the last section:

Quote:

- Feel better.

All gone now.

That's okay.

Feel better. Lighter. Clear-headed.

Time to hunt.

Are these the hunting points? What would that mean? (A list of hypotheticals could contain many bogus points. In fact, all but one would be what you are looking for, at most.)

Or maybe this means nothing but that I'm tired. Goodnight all.

Re: Vectors - This would be incredible, if the pairs of coordinates created vectors all pointing away from (or towards) a single point - I'm sure that would have been found by now though

"The Southern Cross is a major constellation in the sky of the southern hemisphere. While the Big Dipper and Orion are seen by people living north of the equator, people living south of the equator will see the Southern Cross.

This constellation is near the South Celestial Pole, around which the stars in the southern sky rotate. The Southern Cross. It is used for navigation in the southern hemisphere.

Australia and New Zealand have versions of the Southern Cross in their national flags."

One point of curiousity-
You lead to an interesting question: what could the conditions be for a point to appear at a location? Conversely, what makes certain locations (such as everywhere in Texas except possibly El Paso) unfit for points? I'm not sure if we've really phrased our research objectives in these terms yet.

What if the angles were important (i'm sure this has been mentioned) from one point to another? Something in Texas would/could result in high angles, say 60. With west coast/east coast angles, we could resolve them to something as simple as say 26 to -26... So if it's an angle puzzle, that's why Texas gets no love.

Somebody here asked what distance measure a Navigation AI would use.

Well thinking logically, a deep-space travelling AI from the future would probably use light years...

It's rather farfetched, but perhaps the distance in lightseconds between the points would add up to a few minutes or so meaning something...dunnow, just thinking out loud.

Wow. I just realized, for the first time, that Melissa knows that she is on Earth. Not only that, but she has known all along -- that is, it's not something she figured out in the course of SPDR's Phase 2 repairs, since the Mayday text is all from Phase 1. She doesn't know where she is; she doesn't even know when she is; and all of her memories are from aboard a spaceship who knows where; but she still knows that she is now on Earth.

Hmm. Spooky. Might tell us something about the nature of what she calls "the Apocalypse"?
