Just a thought - the Argfest should probably be in a city that is a destination people would want to visit anyway - with lots of fun stuff to do and places we can hang out together. As Scrappy suggests, we may need an amusement park to give ourselves something else to do. Good restaurants are important too. And a travel hub so that as many people as possible have a chance of finding a discount fare. (I think the airefare thing was a big killer on Argfest Vancouver.)

After Winnipeg, and setting aside Las Vegas cuz we did that (although I would go again), my next vote would be to look east to New York or Baltimore.

NYC has those tourist sites, great theaters and restaurants (I personally would squeeze in as many shows as possible), but kinda lacks in places we can hang out without spending too much money. I also don't like to go there without local guides; it's just too damn big. Three airport possibilities (four if you count White Plains).

Baltimore doesn't have an amusement park readily available, but the Inner Harbor is pretty cool with the Aquarium and the Hard Rock Cafe and stuff, and Camden Yard is right there if it's baseball season. Neat funky neighborhoods, like Fells Point. Also DC is just 45 minutes away for those who want to pack in a little American history or climb the Washington Monument. DC does have a Six Flags near by. (BWI is a hub for Southwest and their great fares.)

But the real question is (to avoid some of the fallout we had when people did a reality check on Argfest Vancouver): which of these places would you want to go to anyway, so that if the Argfest is set there you won't lose interest in the end?

ARGfest Sandusky, OH

Don't know why I didn't mention it earlier, but about a half an hour north of Chicago (and a half an hour south of Milaukee too for that matter) is Six Flags Great America. The park is easily big enough for a day's entertainment, some people even go for the Twicket and stay two full days. Especially cool is the newest coaster, Superman, where you ride head first like you're flying. There's tons of lodging right near the park and obviously in Chicago or Milwaukee.

The renfaire in Bristol is also very close to Great America - go on Superman, pretend you're flying, and then go to the faire and eat a big turkey leg. And pretend you're Shakespeare, or something.

Also close to there is Gurnee Mills. Shopping Hell.

OK so obviously I'm biased here (see my Location to your left), but I'll go point by point:

I think New York qualifies.

We have Astroland Park at Coney Island. OK so it's no Six Flags, but it's the home of the world famous Cyclone. Plus, the subway ride out there is half the fun.

aliendial wrote:

Yeah, we have those. As cheap or fancy as you like.

This is one of the best reasons for having it in NYC. Plus, for our European and other overseas folks (we need some Aussies!), NYC is one of the cheapest place in the States to fly into.

There are loads of free/cheap places to hang out: parks, museums, South St. Seaport, Chelsea Piers, Bronx Zoo, etc, etc, etc. My favorite tourist-y thing to do though is get a good pair of walking shoes, pick a starting point and destination, and figure out your way as you go along (and hit as many bars as possible along the way). Another fun (and free) tourist thing to do is to get tickets for one of the myriad of TV shows filmed in NYC: Letterman, Daily Show, Emeril, etc. Spring 2005 is far enough away that we shouldn't have problems getting tickets. Plus Joe can find all the good spots for live music and such.

Me and joebrent are here, plus we're recruiting rose (she just doesn't know it yet). All of us are knowledgable about New York, it would be my pleasure to show off our wonderful city.

OK, here's the Chicago argument Smile

Tons of restaurants to suit all tastes and wallet sizes.

Chicago is usually pretty reasonable too. You can get round trip tickets from all four corners of the country for usually under 200 bucks. (I tested several cities using a weekend in October and the prices were between 100-200 for round trip for example.)

We've got tons o' stuff to do. There's all of those nifty museums - Science and Industry Museum, Museum of Natural History, The Art Institute of Chicago, etc - all of which are pretty reasonable or even free if you go on the right day. And don't forget the Lakefront and Navy Pier . Lincoln Park Zoo is free also. And there's plenty of places to go drinkering Smile

Now we don't have Letterman, but ummm, umm we have Oprah and Springer Dunno

We've got a bunch of sporting event type stuff, but I wouldn't be a really good guide about that. The closest I've gotten to Wrigley Field is in one of the clubs or bars nearby.

I'm here! Well, I used to live there and now live nearby so that still counts, right?

New York Earns Top Rating in Travel Survey

Amusement park? Maybe your town needs a 6 Flags, that is, if you don't have a 6th Avenue. Say, for example, you are standing at the intersection of 6th and 34th Street. You are now within 10 blocks of Macy's, Madison Square Garden, Madison Square Park, the Empire State Building, The Flatiron Building, The Chrysler Building, and, um, Times Square. Central Park isn't too far away, and neither is the 5th Avenue shopping district. You're a 10 minute subway or bus ride away from the WTC site (if that's your thing), Lincoln Center, the Met/Guggenheim/Whitney/Frick Museum District, or the Natural History/Hayden Planetarium if you like that science stuff. Also the United Nations, the WWE and ESPN theme restaurants (touristy), the peep shows and sex shops (not so touristy), Union Square, Chinatown, Little Italy, East and Greenwich Village, and SoHo if you really want to spend some money. I say NoHo is way underrated, TriBeCa, NoLIta and DUMBo too. All of these things and places are 10 minutes away at the most. But I guess 6 Flags has roller coasters, if you like pretending that sort of thing is still fun.

Travel hub...yeah, we got that. Don't forget to look at Newark in addition to LaGuardia and Kennedy.

There's always my apartment, where I charge a low hourly rate.

Not a prob, if me or Bags can't do it, you can always take the Kramer Reality Tour.

Dude, this one's a no-brainer. If there's going to be one in Europe, then ok, but if it's anywhere in North America, it' gotta be NYC.

yeah yeah. I know, I know. Razz Wink I was just there the weekend before Thanksgiving. We had to drive though because the last minute airline prices were insane! What happened to the days when you could get dirt cheap tickets if you waited until the last minute? Anyway...

We've had Vancouver, Las Vegas and Orlando. We've covered the west and east sides of the country. I think the Midwest is sorely being neglected here. We have tall buildings, art and beer too Smile I promise there's no cornfields in Chicago and there's much more to do than ride roller coasters. Laughing

this is just a poll, but still

Anthrax is right, we have a Six Flags and it is accessable by bus even, I know people who have done it. You don't even need a car at all here. I would add that Six Flags is not usually one of the top reasons for visiting NYC but if that is what people want, we've got it.

We ( I mean joe and Bagsbee) can find plenty of places to go without spending too much money. At least two major parts of the city are college student areas, and we all know that students don't have money but manage to live interesting lives. As far as theater, Columbia Univerisity has excellent stuff and let's just say I have an in with the best independent theater company in New York, not to mention friends that are Broadway producers. There are lots of inexpensive things to do in NYC, I see the problem with money being more about places to stay.

All that being said, when I get back from vacation in early September, I will start a new poll adding all the cities that have been discussed. As to kona's point about the time for ARGfest, I think if we have enough notice, we can choose the location we want and then work out the best time to visit.

Still, spending New Year's Eve in Winnipeg sounds like an experience not to be missed.

Here's a summary:
Important factors in choosing a location:
1. Expense
2. Local expert organizers
3. Ease of travel to and from the location from various parts of the US, Canada and Europe
4. Amusement park
5. Theater
6. Good weather at the time of travel.
7. ?? other stuff

I think I'm gonna jump on the NY bandwagon here, if only as a representative of us EuroARGers! It is the place which is most easily and cheaply accessible by those of us from this side of the world, and would therefore get my vote. The middle and west coasts would require an insanely long journey cooped up in cattle-class, not to mention the cost.

I must say, however, that the emphasis placed on finding local amusements parks does concern me somewhat, Wink

IMHO NY would have more than enough to do - museums, parks, bars, restaurants, shows, shops, Joes apartment - what else do we need?! It's ridiculously easy to get around, has several airports and (over here at least) is a destination that frequently has promotions on tickets.

Just my two cents.

Fi

Hey, I second that, as a fellow EuroARGer Wink

When held in NYC, I would have the most reason to buy a ticket and come meet you guys, as compared to all other options i think, mostly for the reasons Fi already mentioned Smile

Agreed, Joe. I merely mentioned Astroland/Coney Island because it's a very "New York" place to visit. It's certainly not your typical Uber-Amusement Park Complex complete with Disney/WB mascots. In fact I think Coney Island's mascot is a shifty guy selling knockoff Rolexes out of a box.
