[Potential Spec/Question] How accurate are the cords?

Before I start wildly rambling about my potential speculation, I was curious how accurate these cords really are. I'm not a big traveler and I can't remember much about coordinates, so I'm just curious: do these co-ordinates point to an *exact* spot in the country? Are they really *that* accurate?

Bass me if necessary.

Roughly 30-50 feet error.

How can you guess the margin of error when you don't even know what they're aiming to?

I mean, if they had a LOT of people go around with GPS devices to locations across the USA, i'd be really really supprised.

The PMs more than likely used a mapping program, or something of the sorts, to get the coords.

I mean, it's possible they had a roadcrew going to each location, but highly *highly* unlikely, the locations are too spread. And if they had so many people working on this ARG, the potential for loose ends would be enormous...

I know Terraserver and mapquest will reveal different results when given the same coordinates. If i remember right, possibly a couple kilometes off from each other? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Long lat length

It's an empirical estimate, based on how many decimal places they have provided in the coordinates. The coordinates express a position to 0.0001 degrees (one ten-thousandth of a degree). A convenient shorthand for converting that to a distance is provided by the fact that one minute of arc on the surface of the earth is equal to one nautical mile in length. There are 60 minutes in a degree, ergo one minute is 1/60 of a degree or 0.0166 degrees. When you calculate 0.0001 degrees / 0.0166 degrees you get 0.0006 of a nautical mile. A nautical mile is ~ 6080 feet (there are several definitions that are all around this length). 0.0006 * 6080 feet = 36.48 feet. Depending on the rounding method they used, the coordinates could really be accurate to +/- half of that, but we can safely assume +/- 36.48 feet in the N-S direction regardless of how they rounded their coordinates.

The E-W direction is a little bit more tricky because a minute of longitude varies in length because of the way it is defined (lines of longitude converge as you approach the poles). However, if we assume the world is a perfect sphere, and the circumference at the equator is equal in length to all longitudinal circumferences, than all parallel circumferences north of the equator are smaller, and the length of 0.0001 degree in the E-W direction is something less than 36.48 feet.

EDIT: Cleaned up a couple of badly phrased sentences and some typos.

I agree with Oea, however you pronounce his name. Nobody would spend that much time and money to go around and examine each coordinate. Instead, they probably just went online on August 10th at around six in the morning and said to themselves "Damn, we need a new puzzle, don't we?" And this was born. They probably just used the internet like the rest of us. If we end up finding some deep religious significance in the coordinates, well, all the better for them.

Well, here's what I was going to say if the points were dead on accurate:

Stop your freaking "OMFG OMFG WTF MY CORD IS 5 BLOCKS AWAY FROM A CHINESE RESTRAUNT THERE MUST BE A RELATION!!!!!!11!!!!!ONE!!!!!!1!!!!!ELEVEN!!!!!!!1!!!!!" It's pointless and stupid. If you think the cords *are* actually that accurate, then what's 5 blocks away is meaningless. If the cords are accurate, focus on the location *exactly.* Don't look more than a few steps away.

And according to the above poster, look only in a 30 foot radius, no more, no less. That's about 10 steps.

Again, Anvil me if need be.

Good to see we're all at the same level here. Now that that speculation is behind, let's get back on track. I suppose that the coordinates are pretty accurate (you were right about my ridiculous overstatement, feel free to trout me) Trout

So, that still leaves the problem of exactly what would be searched for at said coordinates. I mean, seriously, are we looking for rocks, aliens, or a guy in a suit selling lemonade (probably the last one)...

Very Happy

A small note - you guys aren't debating the accuracy of the co-ordinates, you are debating their precision.
