[QUESTION] Recording a payphone?

Given all of the speculation about pay phones, I'm interested in bringing a recording device with me on Monday morning, so that I can upload a WAV if it's really a phone call. Ideally, I'd like a microphone that covers an earpiece, with a standard RCA jack that I can plug into a cassette recorder or something. Anyone know where I can get one? Radio Shack?

What you are looking for is called

a "Telephone Pickup" - Any radioshack should have these.

Hey sfsdfd, are you sure you won't want to hear it yourself, in case there's actually someone expecting a response on the other end? Razz

Thanks to the glories of modern technology, you can hear, talk, *and* record at the same time. And cheap! $5.79 from Radio Shack: recorder telephone pickup

There's also one from Olympus for $14.95 that fits in your ear (& seems like it might record better). Example: telephone pickup recorder

Of course, these unfortunately wouldn't be terribly useful without a tape recorder.

I feel so dumb now. I used to have one of those, but I stuck it on the *front* of the handset. Therefore, I had to plug headphones into the stereo I was recording into. That visual lets me know what's up.

Incidentally, from my experience, since it picks up from the magnet inside the phone, the recording is quite clear, and would be unaffected by, say, wind.

As a backup, if your cellphone doesn't have a 'memo record' function or similar, you can always call your own vm and leave yourself a message (holding the cellphone up to the payphone earpiece).

This is, of course, assuming that it will be phone calls. Wink
