I didn't mean the Microsoft couldn't be behind such a grand scavenger hunt- because, as has been pointed out, that would be rather idiotic to assume. However, I DON'T think that microsoft would make something like a Real Life scavenger hunt. Internet, fine. But actually having people go to those locations could be insane. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I sincerely doubt it would happen. Besides, this isn't exactly huge news- it's more of an underground kind of thing. You know, most moviegoers probably didn't even notice the ilovebees thing, and even less would actually go online and try to figure it out...

Or maybe I've just lost it.

That's just my point. Microsoft already has done just that. The Beast had realworld ARM rallies in various US cities, staffed by actors, where they revealed a distributed puzzle that was supposed to be solved by putting all the pieces together.

The BMW game culminated in a major realworld scavenger hunt in Vegas, with numerous actors up and down the Vegas strip.

Having players go to realworld locations is not insane, it's already been done, in a bigger way each time.

Just FYI, I split this topic, because this meta discussion has more or less become a subject in it's own right. Go here if you want to continue to discuss the accuracy or precision of the coordinates any further.

As a side note, August 24th is not arbitrary, nor is it related to Windows SP2 (which you can ALREADY get). Its 77 days away from the Halo 2 launch, which is an obvious nod by bungie.

That said, does Microsoft/Bungie have the capabilities to do something on that scale? Maybe/Yes...leaning towards less. Will they? Well lets look at the evidence.

The "timing" of the event. 6:07AM on a Tuesday. Most of the younger players, which there is a LARGE/close to half at the very least, portion of will not be able to make it. Some of the older folks will not want to wake up that early if they have work that day.

The "locations" of the event. I'm sorry, but as we were talking in Chat yesterday, if people want to stand around NYC in front of public buildings/landmarks, scoping out the area, most likely with camera's...the week before the Republican convention...at 6:07am when a tourist would not be there...do I have to do the math? What are you going to tell the officer? "Well you see...theres this website...ILoveBees...yeah...bees...and um, this AI is going crazy and posted 220 coordinates for us to all go to at the same time today at this time, so we can help save this girl in China...and possibly the world." Guantanamo Bay, here you come :-p

I still stick to the fact that if there is meant to be an event at these places, at that time, its a bad bad choice. Do it during the early evening, when its #1) Safer, #2) More accessable to all players, #3) At a time where you won't look like a criminal. It's a really sad state the world is in, but we need to be realistic. Sneaking around national landmarks that early in the morning, isn't the best idea. Going to some of the out of the way places, like down the dirt road, into the field, or into the woods, is not a good or safe idea at the time.

Wow, that is great. However, if you were to produce a writeup of the page and show it to the cop (who probably wouldn't care as long as you were in fairly normal clothing and sitting up against the wall), he probably wouldn't care much. Besides, if you had a list of the coordinates, you could even tell the cop to check those places too, you'd get the same stories. However, if anything realworld were to happen, chances are that something would be HAPPENING at the time the cop would normally be asking you to come down to the station with him... LOL

Most places...yeah, you might get away with telling a cop that, and showing information...the week before the Republican National Convention in NYC? Show him a list of coordinates, he's likely to bring you straight into the FBI. We're still in Code Orange or whatever the heck you call it round here, and they're stepping it up for the convention due to its obvious targetability. Honestly, I hope they wouldn't let you go because you produced a print-out of a website and a list of co-ordinates. Like I said, it's just very poor timing if they want it to be a real-world event, and to me, is biggest reason why its NOT a live event.

What time were the beast events? Early Evening-Night from what I remember. Never 6am in the morning. Anybody that remembers that can answer that?

Maybe that is exactly what's happening for other players to witness... Strife's arrest and the court trial following it Very Happy

Well, maybe... For the sake of argument, isn't it 6:07 am Pacific Time? If so, then that would make it 9-ish in NYC...

Which actually wouldn't be an unreasonable time to be hanging out near a landmark. So remind me, which time zone is the 6:00 from?

Bigger than 220 mostly very far-flung and fairly obscure locations? Nah. Sending people to one location, or three, is much easier logistically and financially than the manpower people are speculating has gone into this specific puzzle. Add to that the security risks, as well pointed out, of hanging around at some of these places (remember, some are private property, as well as the major landmarks etc) at 6:07 in the morning (the countdown is local to your computer, so not necessarily PST)... I don't think that's already been done, and while getting a few players arrested may generate publicity (even bad publicity is good publicity, hm?) it's just Not Worth It(tm) IMO.

*shrug* Not to get back into the relative vs literal vs mathematical discussions again (in the wrong forum, too), but I just don't see the basis for direct comparison that people seem to be using between this and e.g. the Beast.

Thanks for the help sherpa. I'll still have to check the countdown.

Out of curiosity though, since I have heard 6:07 around, where exactly was that what was being counted down to?

It's in the main page on ilovebees.com (i.e. it's the Wide Awake and Physical/Axons Go Hot date). Work it out backwards from

Code:
 var chinatime = new Date(2004,7,24,6,7,0);

Javascript counts from 0, in months, so that date is 24/08/04, 06:07:00.

And yeah, tis a bit of a troutish question, but hard to find the answer on t'forums, because of signal:noise Sad
