[META] Behind the curtain discussion
I split this thread off from the Accuracy/Precision discussion thread , as it seems to be a subject in it's own right. -- Giskard

Nobody...except the richest man in the world hyping up the sequel to the game that defined his first video game console.
While I agree that checking every coordinate is difficult and time-consuming, who knows how long the PMs have had to plan this game.
Even though I think you two may be right, if we are going to discount the locations the coordinates correspond to as "in game" I think we should have an "in game" reason to do so, not something as meta as "it would be difficult to do so."
Buuuuuuut, that's just my $0.0266260 CAD.

edit- Sorry if this sounds a little too sarcastic. Don't want to come across as mean, especially since neither of you seem to be trying to halt debate on what is at the locations. So, take my post with a bit of a light-heart. And no anvil head-crushing, please.

Yeah, but Bill Gates isn't l33t enough to think up something of this magnitude... No, I think this is being run solely by Bungie.

*Laughs* You are probably right. I was just joking to illustrate a point. Even if it is Bungie or some marketing team, I think it's likely that they have the considerable financial and human resources of Microsoft (somewhere) behind them.
My point (with some revision) still stands.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from. But, uh, would ANYBODY be willing to fund a manhunt of such large proportions, for any reason??? Actually, we can't even call it a manhunt, because not only do we not know exactly what the coordinates are pointing to, but whatever it is we are looking for could be anywhere within several dozen kilometers.

I'm not sure about this. Look at xnbomb's posts. S/He seemed to pin down the margin of error to some thirty feet. Still, since first and foremost this is a thread about the accuracy of the coordinates, I am curious as to how you came to that estimate.
As to the "would anybody be willing to fund it", I just don't know enough. Microsoft or Bungie may see a considerable value to such a manhunt. They might not. I haven't seen enough, either in game or meta, to suggest something like this is impossible. Or even all that difficult.
But, I don't want to be needlessly antagonistic. You all make good points. I don't think Microsoft would do something this big. (edit- Sigh. Look at Giskard's post beneath this one. Talking without evidence again. I should stop doing that...) I think that, as the game develops, information'll be released showing us what exactly we're supposed to do with those coordinates.

Umm... maybe you should go and visit http://www.cloudmakers.org/ and see what that is all about, as it's a comprehensive history on a game known as The Beast, that ran for a few months in 2001, as a promotional game for the movie A.I., and was done by Microsoft. Especially see the credit listing as that always impresses me a lot... The Beast was HUGE.
So Microsoft did not even already do something this big, they also practically invented things that are this big. Many people here believe or at least hope ILB to become Beast II.

Yep, and it had realworld events in multiple cities, too. The ARM rallies, where a distributed puzzle was given.
So yeah, if you're looking for something that has the same or bigger potential, this'd be it.

I knew I was going to have to get around to reading that Cloudmakers stuff before long. Turns out I waited a little too long, eh?
Well, guys and gals, there you go. Microsoft can, has, and more then likely is doing something big. Shoulda stuck with my gut.
This makes me happy. It's almost tipping me to looking at that coordinate near me. Too bad it looks like it's in the middle of a farmer's field in rural South Dakota, half a state away, and I don't own a GPS.
edit- And looking at the dates that the Beast went on for, it looks like the release of Halo 2 might possibly be at the end of the Haunted Apiary. On November 9th.

could these cords be positions of MS Servers? i mean, MS has tons of servers all over the world, many for Xbox Live. could they be using Xbox Live to deliver a downloadable demo of Halo 2 on the 24th?

I'm in that camp. But even so (and with some *ahem* insider knowledge of Microsoft and Bungie) I don't think either would spend as much as would be required for this puzzle, given its fitting in the 'scheme of things', its widespread-ness to some random places, the small number of people playing it...
Course, ICBW, but another point - if I were still at Microsoft I wouldn't expect just any random employees to be helping with this -- the company is HUGELY fragmented -- so the manpower issue isn't so relevant. It's probably two or three guys or gals spending half their time (or less) on it with a possible cast of a couple of extras who can e.g. write in character.

The three small GPS-related images I posted on the forums resulted in nearly 8000 hits and over 250MB of data transfer.
So, 'a couple'.

As much as I'd like to think this will be on The Beast scale. and as much as I think combining an ARG and Geocaching would kick serious ass -- I'm becoming skeptical.

Guys, someone said this in a previous post- don't get locked into an August 24th end-game date. It's likely that on that day there will just be another puzzile, probably a boat load of 'em, and the game could very well end on November 9th.
If your asking why Microsoft just randomly picked August 24th as the wide awake date, look no further than SP2. They needed a date, and BLAMO. They just used SP2 as that date. That's probably the only correlation SP2 has with this game.

I didn't mean the Microsoft couldn't be behind such a grand scavenger hunt- because, as has been pointed out, that would be rather idiotic to assume. However, I DON'T think that microsoft would make something like a Real Life scavenger hunt. Internet, fine. But actually having people go to those locations could be insane. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I sincerely doubt it would happen. Besides, this isn't exactly huge news- it's more of an underground kind of thing. You know, most moviegoers probably didn't even notice the ilovebees thing, and even less would actually go online and try to figure it out...
Or maybe I've just lost it.
