[EMAIL] To: Amanda RE: Latest UM.net updates

Several of us in #uh had some questions about the bizarre nature of the latest set of urban myths. So I kind of wrapped up all our questions into one email to Amanda. We also had some spec that maybe Ron sent in one of the myths (with a hidden clue inside), so I wanted to get to the bottom of that too:

Hi Amanda,

Me and a few friends of mine were browsing your newest urban myths, and
had a couple of questions.

First, what is the deal with the "Lady in the Red Dress" story? I'm
guessing that the idea behind the myth is that the guy was so taken with
the woman's beauty that he wanted to impress her in some morbid way, but
that's never directly implied. Have you heard any more about this myth
that didn't make it onto the website, or do you know any other
derivatives?

Second, I loved the myth about the mole people. Have you heard any
specific instances of where these populations exist (besides NYC which
was already mentioned)? I'm kinda curious if there might be such a
population here in the Twin Cities. It's kind of interesting that you
mention that mentally ill patients have been known to live there -
strange coincidence that one of your earlier urban myths was about the
Cambridge Mental Hospital, which is known to have a tunnel system
beneath it...

My final question is just kind of a coincidence - I have an old friend
named Ron who I haven't talked to in a long while, but he used to be a
huge urban mythology buff. He was always telling me stories like the
ones on your site. I'm pretty sure I originally heard several of this
week's myths from him - any chance that a guy named Ron submitted any of
this week's (or other weeks') myths? What a small world it would be if
he did...

Thanks for your time - keep up the great work!

Got a nice reply from Amanda, though it seems like her answers are just neat tidbits of info, no real leads. And apparently she hasn't been in contact with anyone named Ron.. Sad

Dear Shaun,

Thanks for your nice note - sorry it took so long to get back to you. The
"Woman in the red dress" story is pretty much a recycled joke. I've run
across many types of urban legends that are, actually. A good urban legend
often has a particular type of punchline, and sometimes jokes fit the bill
in that regard as well. It would probably have seemed more like an urban
legend if it had more specifics as to dates, names, places,e tc. but the
place where I read it (I think it was in some book; nothing important) just
had the joke.

As for mole people, there is a ton of information out there on them. Just
run a web search and you will probably be overwhelmed. There's a book by an
author named Jennifer Toth called "The Mole People: Life in the Tunnels
Beneath New York City" where she was supposed to have gone underground and
seen these big underground communities. Cecil Adams did a Straight Dope
article about it a while back as well.

And your last question - nope, none of this weeks' stories was submitted by
a Ron.

Take care,
Amanda Graves
