[EMAIL] From Charles at CMH

Quote:
Mr. Hager,

Many people have written me lately to ask very similar questions. I am planning to add an update to my site in regards to these emails very soon, if I can ever get through reading them all.

I felt, though, that I must answer your email directly.

As as a reporter, you must surely come across these types of inflated stories frequently, and although I understand it is your job to attempt to verify and relate those stories to the public, I also feel it is my job to impress upon you that it is highly unlikely the filming of this program ever took place at Cambridge. I keep my ear very close to the ground where this hospital is concerned, and have acquaintances who do the same.

I have no knowledge or information of the Tomorrow's Talk company of which you write, and no further knowledge of this infernal dreaded game show.

I implore you to keep an objective view of this rumor and trust you will not publish anything that could disparage Cambridge Mental Hospital without solid evidence to support it.

Sincerely,

Charles Harris

I've heard rumors of a reality TV show called "Dread
House" dreamed up by a group called Tomorrow's Talk,
in which contestants were placed in a mental hospital
and asked to perform tasks/feats, solve puzzles, and
so forth for prize money.

The show never made it to the air, but I have reason
to believe that perhaps this facility played host to
this show if it did exist.

I am working for an indepedent press out of Hot
Springs, AR, and I can put you in contact with my
editor if you have any questions regarding my validity
as a reporter.

Any information you might have on the activities of
this Tommorow's Talk company would be vital to my
story.

Thanks in advance,
Justin Hager

Re: CMH updating

I wish the most recent update was "first" on his update page, and we didn't have to wade through all the old "updates" to get to anything new. Guess we'll have to watch those pages closely.

Hi, Charles. I'm part of that cluster of people that have become newly
acquainted with your site and the mental hospital.

If I might be so bold, I'm wondering if you've ever captured Old Todd
on film - like a snapshot? He sounds like an interesting character. If
you have one, can you post it at your site or send it to me in email?
I would certainly appreciate it!

and I got his reply:

Dear Dan:

I have indeed worked long and hard on the Cambridge Mental Hospital
website and it is certainly nice to know that it is both noticed and
appreciated.

As far as a possible photograph of Old Todd, I believe that is highly
doubtful at this point. While I do remember some pictures of him,
mostly in group photos, from the years we were both at Cambridge, I
would make an educated guess that many if not all of those would have
long since been lost to demolition, age, or Todd's own penchant for
tearing things like that up. Perhaps on my next visit I'll try and take
a photo of him, if I can find him that is.

Thanks again for your kind words.

Charles

Received yesterday from Charles:
Quote:
Dear Heri:

My, my, what a lot of questions you have. Did you wake up this morning
and set a task for yourself of "Testing an Old Man's Memory?" Seriously
though, I only wish I could be more help in answering your questions.

Most of what I know about Dr. House is already posted on my website. He
resigned his position at Cambridge Mental Hospital a few years before I
was even born but his influence of course lasted for years after he was
gone.

Quite a few people have written to me recently about this "Dead Poems"
website you mention, and I am truly at a loss for how to respond. While
the similarities between the story on that website and the story of the
strange patient on my website are undeniable, who can say if there is
indeed any relationship between them? I cannot even confirm if someone
named "Ann Starling" was ever a patient at Cambridge or how, when, or
why she may have conceived a child. It is certainly not a name I recall
hearing before this whole "Dead Poems" affair came up.

I am sorry I couldn't be more informative but I do promise to update my
site with any information I may come across that appears relevant to
the questions you and others have raised.

Sincerely,
Charles

I have been researching the history of psychoanalysis in Minnesota and
ran across your site. Thank you for putting together such a fascinating
glimpse of the Cambridge Mental Hospital's history.

I understand that you are quite busy (apparently more so, recently!)
but I was hoping you might have the opportunity to answer a couple of
questions:

- Doctor Edward House is a somewhat enigmatic figure - I can find very
little documentation on his work in psychoanalytic circles. Can you
shed any more light on his specialties, or where he focused his
research efforts? Also, the photo on your site shows him with an unusual pin -
might he have been a member of any professional or social circles, or
other groups, who we might consult to better understand his life?

- You relate a story about a young woman had (or believed she had) the
ability to speak with the dead in dreams. (See
ttp://www.cambridgementalhospital.com/stories2.html.) Might this
patient have been Ann Starling, whose writings are currently being
prepared for publication by her grandson Reed Singleton? (See
http://deadpoems.com if you have not yet read about this.) If so - and
forgive me if the question seems indelicate - do you know or might
there be any record as to when Ms. Starling might have conceived, and whom
the father may have been, given that she spent most or all of her
childbearing years as a patient in CMH? I ask this not out of prurient
interest but primarily because I am inclined to doubt the authenticity
of Mr. Singleton's claims and would like some proof one way or another
as to his ancestry... learning more about Ms. Starling and her stay at
CMH seems like an excellent place to start.

Forgive me my long-windedness - I know you are a busy man. Again,
your efforts online are much appreciated. I look forward to hearing back
from you soon.

Warm regards,
Heri Chon

New email back from Charles on some questions about construction during the time od dread house. (Some of this was mentioned in his latest update letter.)

Quote:
Dear Jason,

Yes, it seems there is always some sort of construction, and more often
"demolition" going on at Cambridge in the past few years. The
demolition mostly involves the more dilapidated buildings and cottages.
You see, they aren't very well equipped. No modern day heating systems
or air conditioning back when they were built, and they were never
really upgraded much. The buildings don't meet the current building or
fire codes either, and I suppose it was cheaper to just tear them down,
one by one. Breaks my heart it does.

I've also been told that some of the buildings were becoming a serious
safety hazard for all the young explorers who like to trespass on a
regular basis. Which then becomes a liability issue I suppose.

As for your question about the construction in 2003, there were some
areas under heavy construction in the spring of that year, and were
totally inaccessible to anyone but the construction crews. There was
also some demolition in the same area later that year, June if I recall
correctly.

I don't know about companies or groups using CMH in late 2002 or early
2003, but the Minnesota extended treatment program was using part of
the campus at that time as far as I can recollect, although rather than
use the existing buildings, they actually built some group homes out
behind the original buildings to accommodate their patients.

I wish I knew what was in store for CMH, oblivion I imagine. Which is
part of the reason I started my website.....

Lest we forget.

Charles

An important part of this..

Were these the production trailers/buildings used for Dread House? Just woke so I will have to check further at work this morning.

SPEC:
The TV crew put up "construction fences" around the buildings they were using for the show - keeps out the riff-raff, keeps the contestents in a controlled area, keeps the filming of the show "secret". The extra buildings would probably be the production trailers (seen in the webmastertools disc maps). The subsequent demolition of buildings (and removal of the production trailers) would be consistent with "oops, we goofed and need to remove all traces of murder/death so the CSI guys can't find any trace evidence".
