This still doesn't explain the ones in the ocean, but it does sound likely now that payphones are magically appearing where they weren't found before.

Those have been changed. They are no longer in the ocean.

If there's any on the list not by pay phones, I presume they're just unfixed mistakes.

How would the PMs get definitive locations for working payphones if we can't?

You know, if we could reverse-engineer what the PMs have done, it would probably be the single best way to confirm that we are, in fact, looking for pay phones on Tuesday. We'd probably need to find two different resources: one that shows you where pay phones are, and one that shows you latitude and longitude. If we could only find site A and site B, such that if you plug locations from site A into site B you get the very same coordinates as are now on ILB...I've been googling without much success so far.

(Before the update this past Tuesday, we thought maporama.com was a good bet for site B, because it returns latitude and longitude to four decimal places just like the original coordinate table. Pity it didn't pan out.)

On the other hand, this whole thing is so behind-the-curtain it's not funny.

Anybody starting to think the Pay Phone Directory site could be part of the game, designed by the PM's to help us out? Or it could have just been co-opted by them when the game started and quickly updated.

The phones that will not accept incoming calls is a good reason why the entire Mpls./St. Paul, MN metro area was skipped.
D'OH!! Except none of the St. Cloud or Waite Park, MN locations accept them either. But it'd be easier for the PM's to get the phone company to open up one pay phone for incoming calls there than a larger metro area.

Just FYI, I finally got to check out the 17:27 Berkeley (Oakland), CA location today. Sure enough, first thing I see when I get there is two pay phones on the corner, right where mapquest placed the GPS coords. Pretty much makes a believer out of me. I'll be there on schedule, and I'll either take good notes or record what I hear.

Shad0, I think there are multiple Site A's, and http://payphone-directory.org is one of them. It has at least the following hits:

06:51: 508-775-9761...McDonald's....................654 Iyannough Rd, Hyannis, MA
09:02: 650-853-9056...California Ave Caltrain.......101 S California Ave, Palo Alto, CA
10:20: 701-476-9744...Greyhound Station.............402 Northern Pacific Ave, Fargo, ND
10:32: 515-576-6943...Target........................2910 1st Av S, Fort Dodge, IA
11:05: 602-956-1589...Bashas........................3131 E Indian School Rd, Phoenix, MA
16:55: 435-678-3609...Diamond C Food Stores.........89 E Center St, Blanding, UT
16:59: 619-238-9735...San Diego Zoo.................2920 Zoo Dr, San Diego, CA

I've checked about 20 points. The others didn't hit.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the data was taken by hand. The San Diego Zoo point, for example, shows evidence of "tweaking".

Sounds good. Time to dig out a voice recorder, if I can find one.

I've actually used the phones at the first San Diego location (McDonald's on Northside), and they're pretty bad. Hopefully we can get something viable out of it, if someone else besides me does it.

Assuming the message repeats somebody else can take the San Diego Zoo location.

Actually, if the message tends to repeat its way across the country, will we even need to do it except for ridiculous completeness? :)

And if payphone-directory.org is one of the source sites, so is http://www.payphone-project.com/payphones/. Hits from that site:

06:07 & 8:15: National Museum of Natural History inside by the Constitution Avenue Entrance behind the big totem pole: (202) 289-9467
16:23: Cork & Cleaver Restaurant, Phoenix, AZ (602) 840-9905

In addition it matched a deleted point:
on The Mall by Jefferson Street near the carousel across from the Smithsonian Castle Building (202) 393-9309

This makes 10 of around 25 points I've checked that match these two sites.

That first pay phone site lists a pay phone in Ann Arbor "Near O'Connor's Restaurant." It indicates address unknown.

There is no O'Connor's Restaurant that I know of in Ann Arbor... there is, however, a Conor O'Neil's Pub. Which is within 0.0001 lat/long of the point listed on the links page.

I'll try to check out that a payphone actually exists there in the next couple days, since I can't be there Tuesday [whines again] and I think the people covering the spot are not AA locals/natives.

MmMMmMMMMmm... Guinness ice cream. Conor's is a good place to be, payphone or no. Smile

Might there be a payphone inside Conor's? I don't remember there being one out on the street.

Maybe they'll just phone the pub: "Is there a Mr B Keeper in the bar?" ;p

I haven't checked the Austin TX site for a phone yet and there aren't any listings for one in the capital building on the directory sites. Not sure if Greyberger has had a chance to look either.

There is strong evidence for the pay phone theory, so I guess my problem with it is personal. I'm just thinking that if multiple people show up (I know this will happen in Austin) only one person is going to be able to hear the actual message. How would you decide who it was going to be? What if there are a hundred people? I can easily see fights breaking out over this, after all we're already having them online. That doesn't even take into consideration an out of order phone, or a non game person picking it up first or even that someone is already on the phone. If you connect the times and phone theory it would seem that we only get one shot at each location. And I'd be truly pissed if I had taken part of a day off or traveled a distance to get there and wasn't able to hear the message; even if that message was later available on the web. Just seems like very poor planning on the part of the PMs and a huge thing to overlook after all that effort. Like others have said, seems like they would want everyone to be able to participate.
