[TRIVIA/SPEC] I <Heart> Huckabees

Last night on #beekeepers three sites were brought up:

http://www.jaffeandjaffe.com/
http://www.huckabees.com/
http://www.open-spaces.org/

All three sites are fake, and link to the official site for I <heart> Huckabees (IMDb page).

There are a few things that suggest a possible connection between the two:

  • I <heart> (love) Huckabees
  • (someone on #beekeepers claimed) Dustin Hoffman's character is also known as "The Queen Bee".
  • Dana wrote:

    Hi Chris,
so you're a fan of existentialism, too?

The film describes itself as "an existential comedy".
  • Though little plausible connection exists with the story thus far and the plot of the film, The film is about coincidences, and these certainly are some big ones.
  • [superspec]Dana has been pounding the "things are not what they seem" message into our heads for two weeks now. Right now we assume there is probably some connection between this game and the halo universe. What if that is now what it seems?

That said, there's some significant differences that suggest the two are not conneted:

  • The feels of the websites are completely different. The three huckabees sites have a consistent polished feel, where ilovebees has a much homier feel.
  • The Huckabees sites never refer to real locations, ilovebees does.
  • Little to no correlation between the axon locations and the Huckabees stores map.
  • Production quality of the Huckabees ads is inconsistent with the level of detail put into ilovebees - No sane add agency would put that much bluescreen work into an add with such off the wall content. Also, the ads were filmed, and effects work done, at 24-frame (there are sub-sampled 2:3 pulldown artifacts). Almost all TV work (with the exception of REALLY big budget ads and TV shows, like CSI) is done at 30-frame. In comparison the killer.jpg pictures are very convincingly taken with a webcam and the rest of the ilovebees site is very convincingly an amateur job.

I hope, and considering the above facts believe, that the game we're playing is unrelated to this film.

BUT when you consider that ILoveBees is a HOME site from a lady who sells honey, then having it be a super polished website simply doesnt fit, does it?

Maybe the only true Halo2 connection is that they got paid extra to flahds the ILoveBees at the end of the trailer, and everything else is some wild spec...

That was my point. open-spaces.org is too flashy for a non-profit environmental group. The Huckabees corporate site is the only one of the three that I would really describe as in character with reality.

I would beg to differ, while its colorful, open space is nothing that a 14 year old couldnt whip up in a month of work for some money., but thats what it seems to me, so its an imho....

Dude, I SERIOUSLY think you're on to something. These maps are VERY similar to each other. Maybe not point for point yet, but maybe it should looked into further.

http://www.huckabees.com/locations.html

I will be SO pissed off if this has to do with the movie.....which I now think it does.

Also, look at the disclaimer on the TOP of the page at

http://www.jaffeandjaffe.com/

It says

"Disclaimer: We do not believe in promotional websites or advertising. Our clients find us through various and strange referrals or serendipitous events."

Interesting.

It was registered in 2003, before www.ilovebees.com itself.
I don't think it's related.

If you look at the advertisements for Huckabees at

http://www.huckabees.com/adverts.html there is one called "Bees and Trees". The advertisements are kinda weird but it's always fun to watch Naomi Watts. Wink It goes along with their whole save the environment theme.

Also, where was the link to Ilovebees.com seen? At the movie theater. Maybe Fox and Microsoft (or Bungie) struck a deal with each other in order to make that Halo preview happen.

Maybe someone knows the rules about what theatrical previews must include. Do ALL previews have to be somehow connected to a MOVIE? Maybe there is a rule that we don't know about because I have never heard of nor seen a game trailer in the movie theater. I have only seen game commercials BEFORE the previews.

I, uh, believe that a gentle "trouting" is in order (no emoticon) since the search term "Huckabees" didn't bring it up, but it was discussed in a humour thread actually.

Though there are some amusing co-incidences, they're broad enough and general enough that they are probably just co-incidences and not deliberate leads. Terms like "existential", or a map that marks population centers in the US, aren't specific enough to register as "hits" when matching it up with ILB. Besides, I don't think that an "existential comedy" would use Halo-specific jargon like "glassing", "Covenant", ONI, or the planet "Reach" in order to promote itself.

It is funny, though. Smile

-- Steve is amused, and amazed, at the coincidences he's finding going through this puzzle.
