Something interesting about one of the axons in st. louis near Meramec Community College.

payphone #: 821- 9570 --> 9+ 5+7 +0 = 21

prefix for meramec's phone numbers is 984 --> 9 + 8+ 4 = 21

maybe this is a trend with the other locations. any way that we can find out?

There is another possible explanation. At approximately 14:02:30, some lovely person (sorry, Mods) walked up to one of the phones on the 1st floor and picked it up, whereupon the following conversation ensued:

Me: Oh, geez, is there any way I could get you to wait, like, 90 seconds?
Jerk: No.

He then proceeded to turn his back and rummage through his change, all the while keeping the phone on his shoulder and off the hook. Karma's a Censored , though -- whoever it was he was trying to reach didn't answer, so he left at approximately 14:05 without completing his all-important, crucially-time-sensitive phone call. Damage done, however, if that happened to be the phone that Melissa was calling, as appears to have been the case. Mad

(Eight charming and conveniently-placed phones, and he had to pick that one! Cursing )

Well, at least we nailed the 17:15 Burbank site yesterday. You made it to that one, right? I think I remember you telling the wacko-on-the-phone story as we waited.

It was surprisingly a tense affair, answering that phone. I half expected to say the wrong thing and get brutally beaten--but aside from me blanking on the actual message, I'd say things went well.

It looks like the axon out near my college (the Pomona axon) still hasn't been nailed. If it's still open on Sunday, I'll grab some dorm-mates and lock it down.

Who popped the 10:44 axon this morning?!! Shocked
Did somebody try my little experiment and just pick up the phone every few seconds to find out if it was ringing?

Yes, she IS calling places where the call did not connect yesterday (as everybody is reporting). I reported she DID NOT call back to a phone where she was successful yesterday.

Addict is saying that she did call back to one that had gone hot yesterday. So you can't, unfortunately, extrapolate that to all phones.

edit: Ah yes, my mistake. You Americans and your multiple meanings of "block".

the missing axons...

so i just checked the site again and there are only two clusters of axons that haven't got 2/2, "four goats" and "pillow". maybe if those two get their 2/2 status we'll get the next piece of the puzzle. it may not be necessary to connect EVERY axon. thoughts anyone?

(edit): and what's up with the 92/777 at the top of coordinates page? i don't think that's changed...

Well, Pillow will go hot today at either 16:14 PDT in Beverly Hills, or 16:19 PDT (5:19pm) here in Longmont, CO. I'm not too sure if I'm going to make it, and after lookin' over this forum, I havn't seen anybody post trying to hit it.

We'll see what happensm I suppose.

I too am curious about the 92/777 at the top of the page....

Staked out the Train Station and the Farmers Market, market is a dud (payphones do not receive calls there).

Do you guys know something we don't? Where exactly were you guys at 11:31? Please share info.

We were at 8th and Market, right near the Burger King (southeast corner). The phone in question is at the bottom of the stairs, in the train station.

I wonder if it'll ring tomorrow? Shame I can't take time off work.

*sigh*

That was me Smile

Turns out it wasn't either of the phones by the Casino Arcade.. it was a phone by the entrance to Neptunes Kingdom, between Walkway 2 and some ATMs.

I got there at about 10:25, did some scouting. I didn't see any one that looked suspiciously like a "beekeeper", but I did find three more sets of phones. One set of 4 by the carosel, one lone phone by the stage (underneith the ramp to get to that upper kiddie-ride-area), and the phones by the ATM that turned out to be the ones.

The lone phone seemed perfect.. if -I- was going to send some secret recon. info, that would be the phone I chose.. but I remembered the Map put the coordinates closer to the street.

I was a little nervous since some lady was on one of those phones, but she finshed up and left at about 10:40. It's a good thing she did because that phone turned out to be THE phone.

It rang right on time, I had to take a sec to figure out which one it was (..the one on the right..) before I answered.

As far as the actual call went, it feels like it's was the same as everybody else's: Mellissa was saying something about a hardware failure that I couldn't make out because of the strange background voices (also melissa?) There was lots of "I Love Bees" going on..

She only asked for her nickname, (Me:"Operator".... *dead silence*...*wondering if I messed up*...Her:"Good,") Then it was more stange background chatter and then guilty.wav (which would have been more exiting for me if I hadn't already heard it, but ne'ertheless.. also, the sound went out for a bit, which caught me off-guard, but it came back. I blame the phone.)

I "Repeat"ed a couple times, 1) just to say I did and 2) in case anyone walked up that looked like a potential "Beekeeper", but eventually I let it "Continue" and was treated to a wonderfully creepy chorus of "I Love Bees! I Love Bees!"

In Summary:
-Phone Located between Walkway 2 and ATMs
-Phone was SBC, not Verizon
-Melissa only asked for her nickname: Operator
-Didn't get the number for the phone, but someone else can
-Did get a picture of the phone, but it'll have to be developed first
-10:44 Santa Cruz, CA - Second Axon of guilty block - is HOT!

-oh, and this is my first post here. Hi, I'm James.

Bon Air VA Axon

I was at this location yesterday with about 9 other in front of the Wal-Mart. We sat outside by 2 phones that never rang. I was told that there were no phones on the inside and trusted that this was true. So I went back today and walked to the back near the Layaway/bathroom area, and there was 1 phone hidden on the right side wall near the service area. I waited for about 5 minutes alone and finally got the call. I had passed 3 of the guys I met yesterday walking out. I guess they missed the phone.
Still, it was very cool.

Read it again. Read what I wrote again. Yes Melissa is still calling coordinates that were screwed up or missed yesterday. Where the connection was not made and therefore the axon did not go hot. Indeed I was at another one at 12:11 PDT today. Answering the phone is not the connection I meant because it meant nothing unless you answered correctly. Bad answer = no connection made.

Addict and co. messed up at their coordinate yesterday. Teams at other coordinates in the same block of 7 were successful so the .wav was made available yesterday. Addict is trying again today and has every likelihood to succeed, thus making another axon go hot. That is not inconsistent with my post.

I was reporting that a location that was NOT screwed up or missed (9:50 PDT)(axon went hot for that location YESTERDAY), and where the .wav WAS made available because another coordinate also was covered YESTERDAY, DID NOT get another call TODAY - I was checking the issue of whether Melissa's saying she would keep communicating with the crew meant she would keep using ALL the axons, hot or not. In the case of that one location, she did not call again. That is the only thing I was addressing in that paragraph.

four_goats & hey_soldier

Chicago, 41.889273, -87.626523, 7:03 am PST. It went off without a hitch. We were happy to finish one of the two remaining Chicago ones. Another guy was there -- he said he lurked -- , and he was considering posting our success. Since he didn't, I'm reporting.

Also...we've seen no change in coords for the upcoming 41.933417, -087.645220, 14:08 PDT link (which was at the Borders' phones at Clark & Diversey). I'm thinking of heading over there and trying the pick up method. I've checked all the other phones nearby on a site to see if there are some we missed, and all the other phones in the area block calls (except the ones we got another hit at yesterday at the Century Theaters).

So...any Chicagoans going to cover that one? I don't know how four_goats is looking, so I don't know how crucial it is I get over there. Do we have coverage of the other axons that got missed for that group?

New post for Seattle:

Whoever snagged the first one of the day, thanks. I woke up late.

No one got the 9:23 but I scouted and am almost absolutely sure I know which phone it is. I'll hit it tomorrow morning.

The 10:38 location had no phone in the area that accepted calls.

11:41 had numerous phones close to each other, but I didn't hear any of them ring. Street noise might've interfered.

12:38 someone else showed up for the first time today; he'd found another phone besides the two I did, but we didn't think that the other phone was the right one, so we both stayed there. No ring. We went over to the other one, I called it on my cell phone, and it accepts incoming calls, so we figured that was the one. I'll be at that one tomorrow as well.

I hope everyone else has had better luck than me. Where are all the Seattle people?
