We sighed, but about a minute later it rang again. That time I picked it up, and there were about 2 seconds of static; when it ended I said "yoohoo, are you there?" and then probably mumbled something about the Operator, and then they hung up.

It is possible that the second call was not the PMs, but one of the players, though, just calling that phone (a few minutes later the phone next to it rang, and someone asked us where we were).

That's exactly what it was, I was at the phone in front of the McDonalds and (oh crap, I forgot his name) the guy in the black shirt and shorts call over there to see if you guys had any news, but for some reason, he couldn't hear you.

Barnstable goes hot.

I woke up this morning at 6:50AM EDT; within fifteen minutes, I was ready to go- map, coordinates, tie-dye shirt. I thought I was going to have a hard time rousing my brother, but it turned out that... he'd never gone to sleep. He said he'd be fine with some caffeine in him.

Personally, I thought this was going to become a one-man mission with a snoring partner a half hour into my trip to the Cape.

In any case, we made it down to Barnstable shockingly fast. We had about an hour to kill, so we decided to scope the first area out. I went to the Burger King as suggested earlier, while my brother told me he was going to scope out the abandoned lot across the way. What? Okay, sure.

While in the Burger King, I run into Alderaad and his friend, Eric. We just had this moment of expectation, and then he asked, "Beekeeper?" I nodded. Oh, and later it turned out that we knew each other through a couple of mutual friends- it had been years since we'd seen each other, and I had long hair the last time he saw me.

Well, anyway, we headed to McDonald's where we discovered that the phone behind the counter was our target. My brother, obviously in some sleep-dep delirium, took a long time to join us, rambling about stealing a car with a GPD receiver from the used car lot he'd found. Meanwhile, Alderaad convinced the manager behind the counter to help us out and wrote down the directions for her.

Forty minutes passed by, during which we expounded on theories and joked around. Incidentally, has anyone else checked their phone numbers? Both the phone numbers we dealt with had three 7's in them. Anyway, the manager stopped by the table and said that she'd done it. We assured her that she wouldn't be getting any more weird phone calls, which obviously was a relief to her. Success!

We headed back to our cars to drive to our next axon, which was really close by. As we got to our cars, we ran into MattQ and his girlfriend, Athena. Oh, and her adorable Eskimo dog. We chatted for a while, then realized that we should head to our next axon, since it was about fifteen minutes or so from the call.

Once we arrived- oh, this was , Eric went to hit the Verizon payphone outside, and the rest of us headed inside. When we got to the front, the manager told us that no, no calls had been made, and that the phone number we were talking about was actually the McDonald's at the Cape Cod mall. Zounds!

With less than ten minutes to spare, we zoomed out of there and hit the mall. I kicked my brother out of the car, hoping that even in his stupor he would be able to find the food court. He did not disappoint me. As Alderaad and I dashed to the corner of the food court with the McDonald's, I saw my brother explaining the situation to the manager. My brother, a shaggy, bearded, 6'3" zombie of a dude trying to explain this "internet game" to the poor manager of the McDonald's. Oh boy.

Oh, and then we discovered that she had barely any voice. But she said she'd try and do it for us. Then she disappeared into the back of the McDonald's when we saw her again, she was on a phone- a normal phone- with an extremely long cord. She served customers with the phone to her ear. By now we were all dying, not sure if she'd ansdwered correctly and was enjoying the antics of Jersey and Durga, or if she was being driven slowly insane by the sound of beez buzzing.

She got off the phone, and she spologized, because she didn't think it had worked. She said that it asked if she wanted to repeat or continue- and then we knew we had it! Huzzah!

Having done that, we hit up the arcade at the FYE to reward ourselves. Then we parted ways.

On the drive home, at around 11AM my brother turned to me and said, "What a wild night."

God bless you, sleep-depped brother.

Your two phones were PRIVATE phones INSIDE RESTAURANTS? Great job, but I draw the line at this. Jeez.

How did you even know the McDonald's phone was your target? And does this suggest that Melissa (hello PMs!) is harassing random private individuals around the country???

09:05 axon

Well, I went out to the 09:05 axon from the our_hoodlums group this morning. The phone rang and after a message saying "please wait one moment," it launched into the usual spiel. I answered correctly, but for some reason it didn't work. I'm attaching the recording I made - that blank spot in the middle is where I said "operator." I kind of wonder if that phone doesn't have some weird voice activated pickup on it or something that cut off the first bit of what I said. I'm not sure what that high-pitched whine during the operator's dialog is all about either. *sigh* I may try that one again tomorrow, depending on what success I have with the 12:44 today.

Alderaad has mentioned that private residences have also received calls. I don't know if this can be confirmed. What this does continue to confirm is that these numbers are not being researched.

If these numbers are coming from a user-contributed website, that would explain. I can see a former McDonald's employee throwing their old work number into the pool. Rolling Eyes

Well, as for the first phone, there were only a few stores in the immediate area. Alderaad may be able to give a more accurate answer. I know that his friend had a GPS receiver. And Cape Cod is not overdeveloped, so it's a bit easier to guess where you might find phones.

Edit: The other reason we knew they were the right phones is that we asked them behind the counter if they'd been receiving any strange calls, which they had.

damn - posted to the wrong place ... McBee Enterprise???

I just posted under the cold axon forum about how we found these two... here's a recap.

I used the info for the only phones in Hyannis listed at the http://payphone-directory.org and plugged the addresses into the TestDrive Eagle GPS site - and the coords matched up. The address listed in the directory called them both McDonalds sites. So I was going to just use McDonalds as a landmark - and after Eric and I tried the phones around the outside of McDonalds, I decided "what the hell, I'm not going to drive back to the cape if this doens't work" and asked the manager. She was very nice. and that Axon was history.

So, I decided that instead of looking around, go directly to the supervisor. armed with the phone number for the phone from the directory I asked the supervisor at the second McDonalds and she said no, they havn't had any calls. So I asked if this phone number was theirs - she said - "no, that is the phone number of the McDonalds in the mall across the street".

We left the location and not completely trusting that supervisor, I called the number, and yes it was the MCDonalds in the Mall, so the 6 of us dove into our cars and drove across the street. - then that Axon is now history -

Here's the really interesting point. On the way home, Eric and I grabbed food at the McDonalds in Bridgewater, MA - when we got home as my wife was getting her food out of the bag, she asked if I saw the receipt - I said no ... she handed it to me. On the top it said McBee Enterprise ... I have the receipt saved and I will scan it as soon as I can.

If people want me to send an copy of it directly to them, email me at gmail.com.

So are there any McDonalds near these non-ringing Axons?
Do the phone numbers for these places as listed in the directory have three 7's in the number?

Why is McDonalds involved in this .. if they are?

Using Mapquest for the Axon in Waite Park, MN (10:11PDT), there is a McDonalds right by that also. The coords point next to an empty construction lot, but the McDonalds looks to be only a block away. I haven't been there to that area. I went there before the Axon changed, but not after.

Maybe McDonalds will be doing a promotion with Microsoft for Halo 2!!! Whee!!! Master Chief Happy Meal!!!!! I just hope they don't try and sell a Flood-Burger. Laughing

Wow, that's nuts, but congrats for getting both of those axons activated. I don't understand how all the satellite images I saw were so specific to points that ended up being incorrect (the Burger King for the first location, the phone outside the McD's on Iyannough for the second). Great detective work finding the right phones, though. I waited in front of two phones outside a 7-11 next door to the Burger King, and then I think I saw you guys talking and then driving away when I showed up to the phone outside the McDonald's (someone in a tie-dye shirt, someone with what I'm pretty sure was a Bungie shirt).

I'm glad you guys came down. I seem to be the only Cape native playing this, and I sure as hell wouldn't have figured these two spots out.

Part one: Today, I went to look for the one in Independence Missouri, I found the phone, but missed the call while looking for it. I'll be back there tomorrow for the call.

12:32, layton, utah

I asked a friend in Utah to try and make it to the 12:32 (say_something) Layton, Utah site. He said it's in the middle of a residential area (which you can tell from the satellite image), and no payphones within the GPS error margin.

However, there was Training Table (hamburger joint) in one direction, several hundred feet away, with a payphone. There was another payphone in the opposite direction, slightly further away. (A McDonalds or 7-11 or something like that.)

So, no dice. And he lives about an hour away, so it's unlikely he's going to try again... though he said he and another guy might shoot for the 15:55 (meditape) for us as well.

(Very cool of them, since they've never heard of ILB or any of this before last night.)

There were two trucks outside of the AMC where the phone is located, two BEE trucks. One guy who came out, I talked to him, he said he Loved Bees very much and loves video games, especially that one Halo one.

gheritt: I was the guy in tie-dye. My brother, who wanted to dress appropriately for the event, wore his "Don't make us kick your a**" Bungie shirt.

Sorry we missed you, man. Sad

We successfully activated the 12:44/say_something axon today (met a couple of guys there before the call, and a few other people showed up like 2 minutes after we hung up Sad). This time when I gave the response and it stayed quiet on the other end, I repeated myself a couple of times. It worked, and I suggest anyone who tries to pick up any further axons do the same if it doesn't kick into the success response.

I also managed to get my best recording yet, attached.
