Pittsburgh (Shadyside) axon

A friend and I were there for the second axon in the Pittsburgh area. About 15 - 20 people turned up, with quite a few showing up late, and some suspected seekers wandering aimlessly after the fact. Our phone wasn't the easiest to find as it was tucked within the lobby of a Best Western hotel 50+ yards from the mapped coordinates.

We had cameras snapping, video rolling, and more than one member of the housekeeping staff cursing us under their breaths as we lurked suspiciously for about 10 minutes...but the call came right on time, our guy answered correctly (Operator), and our Axon went hot.

With such a huge turnout for that axon (walkaway_girl), I expected that the later one in our area (four_goats) would have at least as many people since it's right near a theater in a popular commercial district. Alas, it appears that it didn't fire for whatever reason. I guess I could have helped juice the second axon for four_goats! Crying or Very sad Sorry, guys. I'll go over there tomorrow if I can.

Yes, I was one of the fools who didnt follow to Best Buy. I just was under the impression the GPS coordinates were more accurate.

Oh well. Maybe Next time.

Nice to see everyone out there.

Phone calls

A friend went to the Dallas location (10:05 PDT), and had no luck. He didn't see a phone nearby, and realized too late that it was probably the phone located in the Target store across the street.

My sister went to Akron (13:08 PDT), and there were four other guys waiting there by the phone. The phone never rang. One had a GPS tracker, so they had the right phone.

I had the Ft. Lauderdale spot (13:59 PDT). We're having terrible weather down here, and with the rain and traffic, I missed getting there by 8 or so minutes. I'm so disappointed, and I'll try to get there tomorrow.

Two friends also hit another Dallas location (15:07 PDT), and received the phone call. They had originally been waiting with another group of 10 people or so, when my friend noticed a sign saying that the phones did not accept incoming calls. She guessed that maybe the call was going to be at the train station across the street. Good guess!

Well I went to the 13:38 one (40.322501 -080.039045) under stupid_cop but there was nothing there. There was no payphone. I looked up and down the street and I looked in the little park there too. Unfortunately there was nothing. Ill go back down tomorrow though. BTW if it is 13:38 PDT does that mean I should be down there at 4:38pm Eastern Time?

Bensenville Axion

Just got back from the Bensenville axion activation. What a blast. About 15 people showed up including dorkmaster and a few lurkers from the board.

I got there about 20 minutes early and no one had a gps. We just hanged at the gas station that a few of us had scouted earlier. It was a marathon station so we thought it was a cleaver link.

Luckily for us two guys showed up with gps and we found the point was across the street in a banquet hall parking lot. Hmm no obvious phones there.

So the gps guys(sorry forgot your names!!) went into the banquet hall and asked the manager if there was a public phone around. He saw how nerdy we all looked and pointed us back across the street.

But I pressed on and he directed us to a phone in a side hallway.

The GPS guys decided to cover this phone while the rest of us watched the marathon phone.

As time went by more and more people showed up. and everyone decided to stay at the gas station. Except for on guy who went over to the banquet hall.

Every minute more people showed up with some flying in at the last minute.

Zero hour arrived and nothing happened. The tension was thick. suddenly one of the banquet hall guys comes charging out and waves us over. We all start yelling and running, barely avoiding death by mini van.

The manager put up a token effort to stop us but it was a nerd stampeed. We would not be stopped.

In the end about half of us got to listen to the message. Before it stopped transmitting.

a lot of fun for a tuesday, Hopefully dorkmaster will publish the video.

See you all at the next gps pos.(hoping there are more)

**I know I'm crossposting this from another thread. This place just seems more appropriate. If you want, delete it out of the other. I won't mind. Much. **

Just got back from the last NYC Point at 40.773359 -073.964160, outside the Whitney Museum at 74th and Madison. There were four sets of payphones in the area -- one was out of comission, the rest were covered by us.

The phones never rang.

Ahh well, the Hey_Dad message still went hot. But it was a bit dissapointing. Good thing our fellow NYC ARGers were real cool to hang out for a bit with. Heya Social!

scouted 3 locations. all in santa monica.

9:32 - my friend and i were pretty much the first ones there. a small cluster of 4 phones matched exactly with the maps. A bunch of other people showed up and we all crouded around the phones. then the phone right in front of me rang and i reached for it. Then suddenly some jerkoff pushed past me and grabbed the phone. i assumed that he knew what he was doing so we let him listen. then he turns and says that its asking him trivia and he looked confused, so i grab the phone away from him and start saying "operator" but i guess it was too late...the moron took to long. I got a message saying "you dont know me and i dont know you. beeez...etc." i heard the dipsh!t asking what happened to the give aways. apparently he was being greedy and thought whoever answered the phone got a prize. way to go buddy.

11:11 - outside the santa monica mall. 3 sets of payphones. some of the same people showed, some new ones too. the maps all pointed to the area between 2 of the phones. the third group of phones was across the street and fubarz mentioned that they didnt accept incoming calls so nobody waited there (we found out later that they do. an honest mistake fubarz, no worries). G4 shows up and interviews all of us. then the time came and went. no call. the host of Pulse on G4 tv ran over to the 3rd set of phones but heard no ringing. So either we missed it or it was a dud. If you're going there tomorrow, make sure you scout the phones near the mall enterance under the stairs. those phones were the ones we didnt cover.

1:47 - my friend and I arrive early. G4TV is there again and they help us scout the location with their GPS unit. We also mention that they should mic the phones. they agree and more people show. Since I was ripped off at the first location, they nominate me to answer the phone. there's 2 so i take one and offer the other to another ARGer. My phone rings and G4 films me taking the call and their mic captures the dialoge. everything goes through perfectly, axon went hot, and I'm able to repeat the message for a couple other people there to hear it. we're interviewed again. It'll air friday on Pulse on G4TV (i mentioned this site in the interview by the way).

ps. one thing i noticed was that the phones at ALL 3 locations were VERIZON phones. I've also heard mention in this thread that many others were VERIZON phones. so keep your eyes out for them if you're still going to a location.

So, has anyone else gone to a location and not find a phone? I know that i've seen duds here and there but has anyone not found anything? At the location I went to there was nothing. Just a suburban neighborhood with no payphones in sight. I noticed that of the 7 coordinates for each group you only need 2 to start the wav file. So will most of them be duds? Also, when we fulfill the 2/2 requirement will some new coordinates be placed up with new wavs?

I went to the 12:35 PDT axon in Raytown, MO. Big dissappointment...perhaps someone here can help me out. Showed up with three guys from the earlier Kansas City axon, and we started looking around for payphones. Couldn't find any that accepted incoming phonecalls, except for the nearby Independence Center mall.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Does it HAVE to be a payphone, and how close to the gps coordinates were the phones? Like how much of a radius do we have to work with?

-Jack

JackBurt0n: the 9:32 coordinate and 13:47 were DEAD on. The 11:11 phones might have been a dud or were located elswhere. Dunno if that'll help or not
