[SPEC] Official XBOX Magazine

Some speculation has been made that Official XBOX Magazine is somehow related to all this.

I have my doubts, since:

Lately, in every issue of OXM there have been "OXM Live Listings", or basically, daily events on Xbox Live. They tend to cover the dates the current magazine is on the newstands, so for the August 04 issue, they cover 7/10-8/3. This points to a August Week 1 release of the regularly published magazine (which includes a demo disc as always). This makes sense, since I received my copy of the August issue in the first week or so of July.

I.E. OXM will not be published on August 24th. Therefore no demo in the regular monthly mag.

Some of the fanboys at Bungie have pointed to this ad in the September issue (not sure it is even out yet), which indicates an August 24th release of a special edition OXM Holiday Magazine, possibly with a demo disc.

Not sure if this is real or photochop.

On much closer inspection, looks authentic.

that's photoshopped. there's no glare at the top of the page, plus the numbers in the bottom right-hand corner have a distortion around them that is usually present whenever someone edits an image and adds something in sloppily--using a less-than-reputable image editing program, saving in a poor file format, etc.

plus, http://www.officialxboxmagazine.com/ gives no mention of an aug. 24 "holiday" issue.

or maybe they had a rather large image (given the dimensions, it'd probably be closer to 1-1.5MB) and they simply opened it in an image editor (photoshop) or viewer (acdsee) and re-saved the file, adding in compression and thus making the file size a fraction of what it would be in its less compressed natural state? you will start seeing compression fragments at upwards of 75-80% of the compression of the original (and defaults are usually 65% or so), so i don't see where your argument really would fall into place with this being photoshopped, in all honesty. as for your "no glare at the top" comment, the glare is coming from the flash on the camera or either a backlight - either way, the carpet would be the best judge on if the top of the magazine should or should not have a glare. judging by the carpet, the top of the magazine looks in order.

At a practical level, I have no idea how else MS would distribute Halo2 demo CDs, if indeed that's going to happen.
OXM seems natural - though I also doubt the veracity of the given image. Why not just state what magazine/issue/page that ad originated in?

I agree Roc. Why would someone go through all the trouble of taking the pic, scanning it and putting online rather than simply pointing everyone to the magazine that they could see it for themselves? Doesn't make sense. Even if it were last month's issue, most video game stores keep the last issue until the new one comes out. Sometimes they keep several issues back.

....a stupid Holiday Preview guide from OXM:

(BTW, sorry about the quality, but I had to use my camera phone so I can prove this to you guys who would, otherwise, likely doubt/flame me without any)

Saw this in the new OXM I got today, the Sep 04 issue. The tag on the bow says,"Do not open until August 24th!"

Theres your proof

Oh and I can spell phone, I just missed the typo and cant edit my post...

I'm pretty much putting up a really good image of the ad just in case someone wants to actually read and look at the ad, as if they had the magazine in front of them...

Yes, the ad is real. I recieved my OXM yesterday, and at the end of the magazine that ad appears. I don't see why everyone thinks it'd be impossible for this to happen. You think bungie/microsoft through the game together overnight? This took months of planning, and in those months, they worked with OXM to do a special issue with the demo disk. I don't see why this is such a hard thing to see happening.

I agree. A lot of people are arguing about how 'it's not them to release a demo'. They release demos in OXM for big games quite frequently, and also they released a Halo Demo for PC before the game came out.

A special magazine issue, and a demo of probably the most coveted game in history is not a hard thing to imagine.

Amish, they released the Halo demo 5 months after the game was out..... And a demo realease now looks like a good ending to this game, BUT nothing can be confirmed, this could be a coinicedence......

I really think that the Do not open until Aug 24th thing is just marketing. I mean, it's a holiday guide, they wanted some holiday joke. They're saying that this magazine will be a gift to you because it's so awesome and has so much info and whatever about your favorite games. Magazine comes out on the 24th, put the pieces together.

Only thing I'm wondering is, does the magazine tend to come out on certain days? (Like, Tuesdays, for example? Which would explain Tuesday the 24th?)

It's also possible that MS, knowing we'd be all up in arms over this, is doing this just to mess around with us.

i wouldn't rule a downloadable Halo2 demo (via Live) completely out. That might make some fanboys wet their pants, though. Shocked Twisted Evil

Who knows, but I love to [SPEC].
