I think guilty comes before message saved. First the girl asks Kumal to spy on her boyfriend for her. He gives her a bunch of data. She goes through it and calls him a few times with questions... ending with a request to ghost Selene Jefferson for her.

[SPEC] Some thoughts on the sound files.

We have several "scenes" that could be overlapping. For instance:

1. Kumal and an unnamed female (I'm going to call her the jilted lover or JL) discuss first her boyfriend Aiden, and the concern JL has that he is cheating on her. She enlists Kumal to spy on him discovers Aiden in fact does seem to be seeing another woman, and has Kumal track him to a restuarant where they serve tuna (which Kumal notes with some surprise and awe)

2. A man at dinner with an unindentified female, Hiro whispering in his ear advice on scoring with this chick. They make small talk (parasites?) and she suddenly leaves, well, suddenly.

3. A woman, indentified as the "lovely Ms. James" attempts to escape from a building where she apparently is without authorization, only to be caught trying to jump over a fence she was apparently dared to jump over.

4. From "reflected.wav" we hear about some absent from home for 571 days. Her last meal was at a hotel restuarant where she had the farm fresh tuna. It's interesting that tuna is mentioned twice, and the way Kumal exclaims "They're serving Tuna!" makes me think it's significant. The same restuarant perhaps?

Unlurking here to join in...

I agree that the 'date' parts aren't Jersey, but Kamal. Using thebruce's list, this is my view of the date ordering:

7: our_hoodlums
19: much_lifting
12: guilty
14: tuna
17: say_something

I think there are parts missing between, but that sounds good to me. I also think the 8: parasites/15: eyes conversation isn't related to this date, but a result of the 22: message_saved information.

As fast as this is going, I probably am out of date already in the time it took me to write this post. ;p Back to lurkdom for the moment.

(thebruce, you should sort the 1:blip entry to the bottom with the rest of the empty ones)

[SPEC] Jersey storyline

The Jersey storyline so far seems to be:

Dizzy
<missing>
jersey
reflected
durga
?

Also, I'm sure that walkaway girl precedes pqi.

From the very latest beer, we can draw more conclusions.

Kamal was, in fact, the guy dumped on the parasites/eyes date. He's about to go to a second date.

The second date is the our_hoodlums/much_lifting date with Aiden's girlfriend.

This is clear because of the book reference in beer and the reference to Kamal's mother back on Coral which matches with the discussion in much_lifting.

The tuna does appear to a connection but I think it's just a red herring. Durga is reeling off information about Jersey, the transition from Jersey.wav to Reflected.wav clearly indicates that. The 513 days refers to Jersey's father's tour of duty. Next Durga moves on to Jersey's mother, who's covertly seeing a man named Simon Brown. No connection to Aiden and the girl waiting for him.

Dah, I'm way behind here, sorry.

walkaway girl can't precede pqi. "Frank" knows she's more than a kid on a drunken prank. They wouldn't forget all knowledge of that during the interrogation.

Read deeper

Unless they're trying not to tip their hand to her. Other pieces fit. For instance, she's being interrogated for being in a restricted area. The girl in walkaway girl is somewhere she shouldn't be, perhaps a restricted area. Further, the girl in each is the same, namely Janice James. I also propose that there is something special about her. Her father is awfully set on getting her out of that interrogation, specefically the touchpad part, which reminds me of empathy testing from Bladerunner and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. If Walkaway Girl does indeed precede PQI, then you have Jan James surviving a rather nasty fall, from what the MPs say, and moving in a way that is rather remarkable for a young girl.

[Major Spec]Janice is an aritificial lifeform, a child. Perhaps her "brain" is what is now the Sleeping Princess?

Agreed, Lil Serf

I think Kamal is the guy on the date in parasites/eyes/beer and that his "sort of" blind date is with Aiden's girlfriend in Our Hoodlums/Much Lifting.

Here's some more tying together of stuff:

Kamal goes on a date with a girl in parasites/eyes. Hiroyuki serves as his wingman through some weird remote sensing system.

Kamal comes home and talks to Hiro in beer revealing that he's been set up by his mother back on Coral for a second, blind date.

The second date is the our_hoodlums/much_lifting date with Aiden's girlfriend, who also has a mother back on Coral. She hasn't told her mother about Aiden, which is why she was set up on this pointless date with Kamal.

At some point after the date, Kamal demonstrates "ghosting" to the girl in say_something.

At some other point after the date, in guilty, she asks Kamal to spy on Aiden with his "ghosting" system.

In message_saved she thanks Kamal for the raw footage he gave her of Aiden. She calls back at the end clearly upset.

In tuna, she's at Kamal's place, and she's pissed about Aiden's cheating. She's ready to get revenge.

And that's the Aiden arc loosely tied. There are still many missing chunks in here, but I think it makes sense.

Okay, I agree with walkaway before PQI.

Does anybody else get the sense Durga is NOT Melissa/Operator from ilb.com? Melissa knew her name, and she seemed perfectly capable of introspection. Melissa knew her specific function -- reconnaissance behind enemy lines. Durga just knows she likes to find things out. Just a vibe I got, I don't know if there's anything behind that.

Escape is LIVE.

Alright, adding escape to the Jersey storyline, we now have:

Dizzy
Escape
Jersey
Reflected
Durga

Also bears mentioning that Durga says during escape "Waking up. Wake up. Stay awake."

Compare to: "Waking up. Stay Awake." from http://www.ilovebees.com/hives.html

edited for a stupid typo.

Durga's Clips of Jan

This is just speculation, but I'm guessing the PQI threads occur directly after the Durga one.

In other words, as Jersey is looking into Jan and James James using Durga's help, at the end of Durga.wav he goes "can you give me pictures" and she says "I can do better than that..." and (begin speculation) proceeds to play a series of video or audio clips, which are the PQI clips, which we unfortunately don't have all of yet, including the beginning (or at least the logical beginning, unless it really does begin with Walkaway Girl, which I seriously doubt).

They aren't "realtime" they're just recordings being played back for Jersey, by Durga.

Thoughts?

Unles Durga is a "young" Melissa.

IF Durga != Melissa then I am really straining to find a connection between today's updates and the previous backstory. Melissa is an ONI espionage AI that we know was monitoring the Covenant prior to being infested by Flea. If these aren't connected to Melissa's memories, directly or indirectly, then we might assume it's recon that Melissa has done. But unless she was out for dirt on other ONI sections (possible, but no evidence) that seems a stretch.

[spec]Flea has Melissa all turned around. He has her reporting her "findings", but her findings will amount to everything she knows about Earth, starting with her early recollections of it. Since AIs probably don't have real teenage happenings, she's recalling her recording of other's.[/spec]

And she says Survive, Evade, Resist, Escape -- notably, it's not corrupted by the Flea's Seek, Behold, Reveal mantra.

(edit after Gunsmith Cat's post) I agree, today does seem to be a completely new plot direction. The "young Melissa" situation seems the most logical.

Spec, tangential: This reminds me of something from <a href="http://marathon.bungie.org/story/">Marathon</a>. Durandal is a rampant AI being kept stable by AI researcher Bernhard Strauss. Durandal claims he was humiliated by Strauss, and comments that he hid his growth from Strauss (who would have crushed him if he found out). Perhaps Melissa was an experiment who escaped from the ONI labs?
