[SPEC] Infrasound

OK, I've been trying to figure out how infrasound figured into this whole CMH / DH thing for a while, and was getting pretty close, but dmax beat me to it, and put the whole thing together, here. I figured this was an important enough topic that it deserved it's own thread though.

from dmax's post:
Quote:
Nothing lives in the tunnels. The tunnels are the resonant chambers that allow the infrasound to permeate the site.

Read this and I think you'll agree with me. This would be why the construction specifics were important... (snip)

Next question: Was Cambridge built specifically to create this infrasound event, or was it a sad accident?

I think he's nailed it. My vote is for a sad accident, but either way, I think infrasound is the key to many of the events at CMH. It's what coused the CMH patients to stay insane. In some cases it's what caused the CMH staff to go insane. And it's what caused the DH contestants and crew to go insane.

Here are a few of the best links about Infrasound I've found. (A couple have already been posted on other threads):

Infrasound - John D. Cody
The Sonic Weapon of Vladimir Gavreau - Gerry Vassilatos
Infrasound - Lower The Boom!
Infrasonics - about.com
Acoustic Trauma: Bioeffects of Sound (pdf) - Alex Davies
RESEARCH ARCHIVE : Acoustic Trauma - Infrasound and Low FrequencyWeapons

What does everyone else think?

I agree, Infrasound could be what links everything together. I'm going to try and use this post to collect together all the references to it in our in-game sites just as a reference. (references as a reference? Er.. anyway) Obviously all of this has been said before (don't trout me please!) I'm just trying to collect it together.

Urban Mythology

Something Sounds Funny:
Story about sounds that 'cause upset' - towns that have a "hum" causing nausea, reference to haunted houses.
http://www.urbanmythology.net/legends/ssf.html

Brain Drain:
Doesn't directly reference infrasound, but tells of a lady who hears rhythmic tones in her dreams that spell out messages.
http://www.urbanmythology.net/legends/bd.html

Haunted Hotels:
Quote:

Is it all a secret government plot using infrasound? Are you brave enough to find out?

http://www.urbanmythology.net/legends/hh.html

Seven:
Though it doesn't mention infrasound anywhere, I thought it was worth a mention as 7Hz is the frequency at which infrasound causes serious injury/death.
http://www.urbanmythology.net/legends/seven.html

CMH
As dmax noted, there are several references to strange sounds at CMH:

http://www.cambridgementalhospital.com/stories.html:
Quote:

..workmen reported hearing strange tonal vibrations coming from within the earth and seeing vague shapes resembling the human form..

Men then begin to die of undetermined causes.

http://www.cambridgementalhospital.com/stories3.html:
Quote:

..it is said that you can still hear the anguished moans and footsteps of the insane once institutionalized within Cambridge..

Hmm, is it really the moans?

Quote:

There have been reports that some of these young people have heard voices chanting in a strange dialect from beneath the earth..

It's interesting that in the second story of the girl, it is specifically noted that:
Quote:

in fact the dream was void of any and all sound

I wonder what this means?

DreamProjector

Though there are no direct references to infrasound - and none of the dream videos have sound - the site has a ton of 'This is the Science bit' pages which discuss electrical impulses of the brain. http://www.dreamprojector.com/nfscience3.htm is particularly jargon-tastic, and almost completely unreadable by my non-scientific brain - does it have anything that suggests that the machine might produce infrasound?

Finally, one of the dreams contains tones similar to that mentioned in the Brain Drain story on UM, and the "hum" in the towns: http://www.dreamprojector.com/td2003_00246.htm.

Quote:

..their [sic] was a humming sound, that started softly but constantly got louder and louder. It was a pulsing, an alternating rhythm that gradually overpowered the music.

And then all I could see was this lightning, these bursts of electricity, everywhere. They engulfed me and I lost myself in the pulsing energy. I was mad when you woke me up.

Mad eh? Mad insane?

Sorry for the long post, hope I didn't waffle too much.

Hmm, intriging. Some kind of link between infrasound and electroshock, maybe?

infrasound spec

NICE work!

Now if we only knew what to do with all these infrasound-related comments.

So the next obvious bit of [SPEC]: What's producing the infrasound? An abandonded government project? Could it be a natural phenomena?

any ideas?

Remember the time period during which it started. From the stories page:
Quote:
The stories surrounding Cambridge began with the second attempt at development in the early 1900's.

That seems, intuitively, early for it to be government sponsored. However, I could be naive. Looking at the links that others have provided, I'm seeing research much later in the century? So I'm still thinking that it's a structural accident, rather than intentional. (Convince me otherwise! I love a good conspiracy.)

No, I think you're right. It's not unknown for infrasound to happen by chance...

Still, even if it is infrasound, there's still tons of unanswered questions. Like who the hell called up Charles and warned him to stay away from CMH? If it's natural, who would care? If it was Tomorrows Talk, and they want him "out of the picture", at this point, the quickest and least suspiscious way would be to let him go back to CMH as quick as possible Wink

No, friends. Infrasound is, at best, barely half of what's going on here.

How come this infrasound seemingly doesn't affect Old Todd, who's been resident on the site for years, yet caused the entire Dreadhouse crew to simultaneously slaugher each other within the space of - what, a few months, at most? Assuming it IS infrasound, this, to my mind, seems like the strongest evidence we have that there might be some controlling will behind it.
