Minor thing -

MC ain't 'molded' to his armor. He and the other Spartans can take it off, they just hate not being in it.

Based on the way Beast 1 went, methi nks this arg wont go anywhere NEAR the halo mythos. I hear a ton of halo names bandied about and have yet to see any of them working in ILoveBees. Please give me a direct point out, and none of this "Oh, Melissa is actually Cortana" kind of thing. Is Spder or Pious Flea within the Halo mythos?

Don't assume that because this story hasn't included any of the characters from the Halo stories, that it doesn't take place in the Haloverse. Because everything seems to point to this being the Haloverse.

MC is capable of time travel via the crystal that the Covenant were after in the novel Fall Of Reach.

Except that the crystal was destroyed, and the pieces of the crystal that were recovered by the Covenant were delivered to the Prophets on the Covenant homeworld pre-Halo 2.

We don't actually know that the crystal enables time travel - all we know is that it warps time and space. While this could, in theory, allow time travel, there is no indication that the MC, Cortana, or anyone else knows how to use it. The only real reference we're given as to its purpose is that if the Covenant were to get their hands on it, they could travel through Slipspace at speeds unheard of before. It's doubtless Forerunner tech, but assuming that it's a time travel device is...erroneous, I think. At the very least, it's unfounded.

I haven't followed the ILB game too terribly closely up till a few days ago, but have there been references to time travel in the game, or are they merely speculation?

I don't think the Master Chief is involved in the ILB story, and I don't think he'll show up in it, either. This is "someone else's tale", and Bungie has never been so blunt as to do something like drop the most established character in the story's universe into one of their amusements. They're subtle and they're clever about it.

I believe the Covenant manage to find Earth via the symbols seen in the artifact in the museum (I forget the planet's name, exactly - where the Chief first faced Hunters) and on the walls in the complex under the ONI base on Reach. There are indicators that humanity is somehow related to the Forerunner (pl.) (343 Guilty Spark: "Last time, you asked me, if it was my choice, would I do it?" when the Chief is about to re-integrate the Index, which would fire Halo 4 and clear the galaxy of life capable of supporting the Flood.), and it isn't much of a stretch to say that the Forerunner knew about and were involved with Earth.

My personal theory, based on hunches, is that humanity is a descendent of the Forerunner race, but "devolved" somewhat. The Covenant seek out and revere Forerunner technology, and they worship the Forerunner as though they are nearly gods, so it makes sense that if Earth were important to the Forerunner, a) there would be markings on their technology that pointed to Earth, and b) the Covenant would want to capture Earth due to its religious significance, and cleanse the "infidels" off of it (either not recognizing humanity as the descendents of the Forerunner, or regarding them as an inferior imitation unworthy of the reverence bestowed upon the Forerunner). It could very well be that humanity is unknowingly sitting on top of the holiest place in the entire Covenant religion.

To stretch into the REALLY iffy, you could even apply the Christian mythos (since Bungie seems to be fond of religious history and stories). In Genesis, God "created man in His own image". That is, Man was created in God's form, but was not God himself. What if the Halo story takes the idea that the God of the Christian religion was a super-advanced race that created humanity? That would explain 343 Guilty Spark's "recognizing" the MC (since he is a descendent of a race created in the image of the Forerunner, but is obviously superior to the rest of the race, and therefore might be mistaken as one of the Forerunner).

All speculation, of course, but I think it fits what we know, anyhow.

By the way, not the Master Chief but A SPARTAN was mentioned in the Operator's monologues.

The Operator, in a confused stupor, wrote:
Marine: Damn right, I'm running away! There's two of us, alone, on foot, no weapons, and four hundred Covies on the other side of that hill. What are you going to do, tough guy--field-rig a railgun out of a rubber band and my dental fillings?
Spartan (speculatively): You have fillings...?

Of course, all we know about this guy is that he's tough, he's a Spartan, and he watches too much MacGuyver. Still, while we're on the subject, this guy-who-appears-for-one-second fits the profile of the Master Chief, if only as much as the next Spartan.

I am of the opinion that this story will somehow explain how the Covenant manages to find Earth. I think the height of irony, and complete coolnees, would be to have ARG player actions do it.

I had the exact same thought yesterday. Some accident in slipspace (which has been noted to have odd temporal qualities) causes Melissa to get flung back to our time. She attempts to fix herself culminating in her sending out signals of her location in an attempt to be 'rescued' by her crew. Radio waves take a hell of a long time to reach other systems so in the far future the Covies receive an odd transmission that shockingly would seem to denote the location of the filthy heathens (i.e: us).[/ramblings of the deranged]
