Question: Is Melissa still benevolent?

Note: I didn't see this, but if its up somewhere, trout me and keep on.

Okay, up to this point I've been working under the following assumptions:

A)Melissa is hurt
B)Melissa is broadcasting to her crew to help her
C)We are fulfilling the functions of her crew by assessing the damage, i.e. the waves.

Now, if this is the case, why is Melissa making "Secret Paths?" She is making it harder for us to help assess the damage this way. That is not behavior of someone that actually wants the help.

Unless Melissa isn't totally herself anymore. Now, I know she was damaged in the time-crash, but I worried the flea has more control over her than we are realizing. By reading the SP's stories, you realize that the flea has taken the role of the corrupt advisor, like in every classic tale(LoTR, for example).

Basically what I'm suggesting is, maybe we should make sure we're still helping Melissa before we do anything major. We might be falling into the flea's hands (or claws?) instead.

If we don't keep on going, neither will the Arg [very meta] no matter what we do, this outcome is most likely preset, so we might as well roll with it.[/verymeta]

I think we should help SP as much as if not more than Melissa.

I for one think SP may be the key to this whole mess So I Sent transcipts of the wav files in order for her to get the same info as melissa. Also it keeps her from having to sneak around so much and possibly get caught. It may even help SP remember who she is, Especially if she is tied to the memories being displayed.

I think that its not really about benevolent/malevolent. Melissa is confused. She thinks that she has crashed into enemy territory, that she has survived assassination attempts... The Flea is tampering with her, and Melissa seems to be completely unable to get a grasp on the situation.

So I think that whether she is benevolent or not (and I think that snippets of her "memories" seem to indicate that she was...), we still have to be wary. I would approach Melissa the way I would approach an injured animal - they have a tendency to lash out at anyone, friend or foe, just because they are confused.

Our best bet, with Melissa, is probably to stay under the radar as much as possible as we try to help her sort out what's happening, and we help the SP.

My 2 cents, for whatever its worth...

I agree and I would add the following:

in any ARG you have to be careful of believing what any character tells you. In this game, that would include Dana and all four of the programs.
As a practical matter, that means we have to always consider that something we have been told is misleading or a lie. As we have no way to verify any thing we know so far, but can only work within the texts we have, it might be best to keep an open mind to all possibilities.

Was Melissa EVER benevolent?

Her first action (or SPDRs on her behalf) was to take over ILB. Shortly there after she wants to kill Dana. Her current front page talks about "punishing even minor transgressions with shockingly excessive force". None of this sounds like a benevolent individual.
