That was an enjoyable read, however, there is one thing I need to inform you of. Techincally, the Halos do not destroy the flood, the destory all life around the flood so that flood will die off without having any hosts to corrupt. So technically you're right except having the flood on the Halos seems almost like an excuse by the Covenant to wipe out life in a 25,000 light year radius of the Halo.

[OFF TOPIC] Something that puzzles me is that if Guilty Spark 343 is a covenant AI, why does he speak english? I know Cortana has a Covenant Translator but she was out of Master Chief during most of the 343 levels.[/OFF TOPIC]

I think most people believe 343 Guilty Spark was Forerunner, not Covenent. I am not as deeply versed in the Haloverse as most, but I think that is what most believe.

Guilty Spark 343 seems to definitely be a Forerunner AI. He has control of the Sentinels, which attacks Master Chief and Covenant alike, as well as control of Halo's teleportation grid (an ability the Covenant have never displayed, and probably would use if they could). He possess a knowledge of how to fire Halo, where to go what to do.

As to how 343 GS can speak English (or perhaps, more accurately, that Master Chief can what 343 GS says. ) there is a strange connection that the SPARTANS possess to Forerunner and Covenant tech. Perhaps humanity has had dealings with the Forerunner.

I was under the impression that the only known Floodlings were on Halo when it was destroyed, which is why Cortana decided to destroy it, as opposed to 343 Guilty Spark's plan of using Halo to destroy all sentient life.

If a single Floodling made it off Halo, we're in trouble...

First off Ary, if I may call you Ary, let me quote 343 on the real purpose of the Halo we're on in the first game:

http://halosm.bungie.org/story/level_transcripts/lv07_library.html

343 GUILTY SPARK:
The installation was specifically built to study and contain the Flood. Their survival as a race was dependent upon it. I am grateful to see that some of them survived to reproduce.

What 343 says here is important because it clearly states that Halo is not primarily a weapon, which the later part of his theory relies upon. It is a very thoughtful and interesting read, though.

--

Now with how 343 "knows" the Chief from before, I link to you this (VERY long) theory: http://carnage.bungie.org/haloforum/halo.forum.pl?read=467643

In short, it suggests that the Chief has travelled backwards through time due to the crystal on Reach that he and the other known remaining Spartans liberated... and that he has gone back to the original Halo at some point before he even originally arrived there.

That's kinda confusing, but it can explain not only how the Spartans know how to use Forerunner technology, but also how 343 knows who the Chief is.

--

More than likely the Flood have not been destroyed.

http://halosm.bungie.org/story/level_transcripts/lv08_2bet.html

CORTANA:

You have no idea how this ring works, do you? Why the forerunners built it? Halo doesn't kill flood, it kills their food. Humans, covenant, whatever. We're all equally edible. The only way to stop the flood is to starve them to death.

If you listen to Cortana, she never says that they need to blow up Halo to stop the Flood... only to stop 343 from firing it and killing everybody. The Flood probably are still alive and kicking it somewhere in the Caribbean as we speak, sipping brain martinis with only a little lemon added on for flavor.

wow, this topic has strayed from that wacky "3 swords" theory
anyway, my $.02
there's a reason why Halo didn't kill the flood, it can't... even destroying Halo didn't kill the Flood. those little writhing brown bits of flood-flesh are still floating through space where Halo was... searching for new hosts to glom on to. (remember how the floodlings would "pop" when you shot them?) That's why Halo killed all OTHER life, because it COULD NOT kill the flood. The Forerunners knew that it was worth it to sacrifice billions of sentient lives if it meant saving the Universe as a whole.

as for Master Chief going back in time before Halo was destroyed, etc... yeah... probably... because how can you have a game called Halo 2, and not have the Halo in it?

(oh, and as for the varrao mites being a primitive flood form... there is no evidence whatsoever other than fanboy musings. As interesting as it might be, "omgwtfbbq!!!1 teh vaorro mitez r teh floood!!!!!1112" doesn't make your argument any more compelling)

Halo wasn't singular, there are multiple ring worlds.

(Sorry, this is way off topic... perhaps it should be its own thread...)

The problem with the destruction of Halo not destroying the Flood is that it means we're 100% screwed. The evidence for the Flood still being around is compelling, but it essentially means the only option for us is to activate another Halo and destroy all sentient life in the galaxy.

The Floodlings can be killed by a single round from an assault rifle; I doubt they can survive the destruction of their homeworld, and there's no evidence to suggest that their scattered flesh can reanimate itself.

(And of course the varrao mites are the Flood! All parasites are Flood, and that's why you keep seeing bees that have arms for heads and carry huge rocket launchers. Wink)

If the destruction of ("our") Halo didn't destroy the Flood, I bet we could still have them starve to death by containing them similarly to the Halo.

Besides, with just the little time that Cortana had on the Ascendant Justice in First Strike, she managed to improve upon already-existing Covenant technology... the humans just may be crafty enough to conjure up a way to contain the Flood before they devour the universe.
But yeah, the Flood are pretty wimpy when you actually fight them.

Then again, maybe the humans REALLY ARE the Forerunner and they created all the Halos and stuff!!!

Could be, 343 Guilty Spark definitely had a human-like stuck up attitude.
Heehee, I'm so intelligent. Or whatever it is that he said.

yay

forerunner = human? perhaps something in the actual name forerunner gives us a clue? oh well, this is worth nothing but it would be quite interesting if humans had a link to the forerunners, perhaps the forerunners are white mice....(hitchiker's guide to the galaxy).
