Nope, they don't take any incoming calls. Most of the time I get a 'This number has been disconnected' message.

A couple of times - notably on the two phones that are bang-on where acme and MQ place both cranky_old_man and - previously - thin_kinkle / posture_counts - I get a message of 'this number is in service, please hang up and try your call again'. Both times I got that (odd) message, I called the phone company to confirm that those phones didn't accept incoming calls.

I'd spec that the phones used to take incoming calls, but had their options changed recently (one of the operators suggested this as a possibility), that's why I'm starting to think that cranky_old_man might not be possible (and why the thin_kinkle / posture_counts wasn't possible too).

Stansted to the Axon is best accomplished by train (http://www.stanstedexpress.co.uk/) & then the London Underground. There's a train service right from the Airport which goes to London Liverpool Street. And from there you can get the underground to Tottenham Court Rd, or Oxford Circus, or Leicester Square, or Piccadilly Circus, all of which are within walking distance of the Axon.

Good luck!

Jaw, if you can't make it today, be sure to check each morning and make sure someone hasn't already gotten it. I have a feeling this may not be available for long...

I wonder what gives you that feeling? Could it be my saying that I'm going to be there today? Rock On

If, for any reason, Malrog fails to get this axon. I have many friends in the London area who would (probably, with a little coercion) get this axon for me. Just give the word if you need me to coordinate an attack.

Thanx for the info.

Turned out I couldn't make the flight. Crying or Very sad
The only flight was at 7am this morning and I had to drop my wife and kids off at 8am. So, no go...

Maybe there are some more European ones in the next batch of Axons, like in Rotterdam - The Netherlands... Wink

I'll start that London Coordination then shall I?

I can have up to 5 people scouting the area by monday (possibly)

Give me a shout if you need it to happen Malrog. I thought you were going to get it today but... it's not hot yet. (10:40 PDT)

I'll give the word to my friends over there to be on standby for if I need them. They're not BeeKeepers, so have no prior knowledge of this 'hunt' but can be persuaded to go out looking if necessary.

There were four of us there today (Malrog, Fi, Danhon and yours truly) and about while there was a phone at those exact coordinates, it didn't ring. Looking around, there's about 12 phones in that area alone, given that this is smack dab in the centre of London.

We've agreed to head back tomorrow and to meet at the Costas on the corner of Old Compton Street and Dean Street.

At the risk of (re-)stating the bleedin' obvious:

Melissa's never been to London. She's getting her phone numbers from somewhere. Have you checked the phones in that area against the pay phone numbers listed on this page or this page? (Admittedly, I have no idea whether most of these phones are even in London, but it's a place to start.) Or this one, which is definitely somewhere in London (Queen's Elm Court, wherever that is)? Or this one, which is also in London?

As painful experience over here in the States has shown, the GPS coordinates are rarely really accurate. For example, yesterday I enhottenated a pay phone at a very very large mall. The mall contained over 30 pay phones, hundreds of meters apart from each other, yet every single one of them had the same street address -- the "official" address of the mall. The correct phone ended up being quite far indeed from the GPS coordinates.

Somewhere there must be a web site that will give you the coordinates 51.512767 -000.131950 when you plug in the address of some place with a pay phone. But plugging the same address into three or four different sites can give you three or four different GPS coordinates. Unless you are lucky enough to find the site that Melissa used to get the GPS coordinates, and plug in phone numbers until you get an exact match, you won't know for certain which phone Melissa is going to call. So try to find the phone, not just the coordinates.

(Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.)

I damn well hope the PMs aren't using those numbers, given that only one on the list is using the current area code (London's changed a couple of years ago). We did try to brainstorm about how they picked the location, but couldn't really come up with any answers. England doesn't, as far as any of us could remember, have a directory of payphone numbers.

As for the location, we checked three map sites and the location was consistent to all three, so I think we're good as far as that goes.

London Axon Fun!

Well, what fun we had. You can see on the map, the locations of just some of the payphones in the area around the GPS point (payphones in purple, GPS point in red).

I turned up at about 5:15 (local) and scouted out the 2 phones closest to the point. They both accepted incoming calls, and both rang when doing so. A good start. I then went to Costas where I met up with Flidget Jerome and, a few minutes later, danhon. We grabbed some coffee and chatted until just before 6pm, when we made our way to phone booths, danhon went north to the payphone just above Old Compton St, while Flidget and I each comandeered one of the two booths I had scouted earlier. I was particularly hopeful that I would get the call as the phone number of my booth ended in 1337, and that appealed to my sense of humour Smile

Anyway, time passed, and we had to beat off numerous people wanting to use the phones, Soho is BUSY on a Saturday night! Then someone started looking very curiously in both of the phone boxes, so I asked if she was waiting for a call. She said yes and I said "At about 6-oh-7?" and she said Yes again. Fi had turned up, after saying she wouldn't be there! Anyway, she went to see danhon at the north phone, and I continued my vigil. The time came and went with no phonecalls, and an increasingly impatient foreigner standing outside my booth! So, we decided to have a little scout around the area, to see where else might receive the call, and lo and behold, just round the corner onto Shaftesbury avenue were two more phone, then another two fruther down the street, and a further two across the street. Then a little further afield we could see a group of three phones and a block of 6! We couldn't believe it would be those though (and I've not marked them on the map).

Anyway, personally I think the two just round the corner on Shaftesbury are our best bet, assuming the two that I scouted out don't ring tonight! My reasoning, other than that they are the next closest to the GPS point, is that they both sit right infront of No 77, Shaftesbury Avenue. And the No 77 isn't discreet either, it's in large Gold letters, and written more than once on the building! And knowing Bungie's love of the number, this seems as good a clue as any!

So I'll be going back tonight - my parents think I'm nuts - and I hope to see as many people there as possible - there are a LOT of phones in the area, and since it's so busy there's just no way anyone can watch more than one phone.

Thanks to the other 3 for being stand-up people, and I'll maybe see y'all tonight? Oh and Atrophied, if you can get any help for us - that would be appreciated, we'll be meeting at the Costas, as Flidget says, at about 5, 5:15 (local time).

Finally, UK payphone directories, here's some links for those who have more time than I do to do some searching:

http://www.ukpayphone.net/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ukpayfones
Or perhaps somewhere on the BT site? www.bt.com

Just Google UK Payphone Directory, I'm sure you'll find lots more!

- Malrog will not be beaten

Ah, so typical. If the axon were in a week I could head down too, but at the moment I'm tied up 9-5 every day, and haven't been checking the forum at the weekend. Godsdamnit. Good luck other UKers, seems like the PMs heard our plea...

Found another UK payphone site

Here's another UK Payphone site, and it looks to be a pretty good one:
http://www.192.com/maps.cfm

Sadly, you have to pay for this one, much like the other directory I found Sad

Why can't I find a free directory!?!

- Malrog is poor.
