This is what I do when faced with impossible axons: Sad

Both rowan and I showed up at a bit before 2, and I met up with the same security guard I had spoken to the day before. When I did, he proudly displayed the bank of phones he'd spoken about - right near the entrance and too far north to be at the actual coordinates.

When I pointed this out and asked about the part of the building where I thought the axon should be (in the actual bank itself) he said that that portion of the building was closed on weekends, and in any case there were no public phones there.

I headed back outside and ran into rowan (immediately identifiable by her GPS device). She told me she'd had difficulty in getting a signal, but had managed to pull one across the street. Using that, I showed her where I suspected the coordinates pointed along the outside of the building, and she agreed with my reasoning.

We headed back inside, checked the phones for dialtones and then chatted a bit about the game and the axons so far while we waited for 2:11. We both said that we hoped and thought that all that's happened so far ends up being a prelude to the game itself.

In any case, the time came and went with no call. I'm at a loss as to what to do next. With luck, on Tuesday, odd_duck will display a more accessable coordinate (and time!)

Sorry guys.

Just a note - in situations where the coordinates were based on the address, THE ENTIRE BUILDING is at the coordinates. Thus ANY phones in the building could be ringing. Not to get too hung up on exactly what mapquest shows, because in an address-based situation the "x" is just a place on Broad Street in the right part of the block. So really, there was a good chance you were at the right phones. Dang. (we don't know that was how these coordinates were chosen, but it's possible)

The payphones in the subway in DC - the coordinates have not been right on top of the subway entrance but like 50-100 feet down the street. (We only figured that out based on a couple cases where there simply weren't any nearer phones.) We also have one where the coordinates are right at a subway entrance but the correct phones are the ones halfway down the block (NOT in the subway). Go figure.

One way to triangulate, because it sometimes yields slightly different results because it is not address-focussed - is the geocaching site vpisteve mentioned some time ago. (Free membership needed to get detailed results; ignore the suggestion to take a paying membership, you won't need it.) I used it to help find that last one up there -- its results were also wrong, halfway up the block but across the street, but that helped me decide to try the outside phones the first day rather than the subway phones.

Yeah, I haven't quite figured out how the coordinates for odd_duck were chosen because its not based off any geocode address that I have been able to find (all of the other axons I have done were at their geocode address). If it was just a matter of finding the right phone at a certain address it would be one thing, but trying to find the correct phone within a block radius is another - especially if no one can get to it except on weekends (and I'm not planning on any more trips to Philly in the near future).

The only other possibility is that it was one of the street phones which were on the other side of the street from the Wachovia building. The one place I was able to get a signal had a payphone that would have been within the range of error for my GPS device (under the Banana Republic sign across from Wachovia for anyone who cares) but I'm still not convinced that would be the phone. There was another phone about 10 feet from that one and a third (broken) phone on the opposite corner. I don't know if anyone would be able to get to these sometime soon (anyone have Monday off?) but I'm personally willing to just write this phone off and hope for a new coordinate on Tuesday (maybe in Binghamton *hint hint* after 6:30pm *hing hint* - or even Byron, TX since I'm going to be there all next week. Really, I'm willing to answer the phones, but ya gotta give me a little break PMs Very Happy )

Trying the reverse geocoding trick based off NavTech data (the biggest supplier for MapPoint and MapQuest and a good deal of others) this is the best I can come up with.

1400 Moravian St, Philadelphia, PA 19102 (39.9495749648241,-75.1642442309418)
S Watts St, Philadelphia, PA 19107 (39.9491275874334,-75.1637456271324)
1333 Walnut St, Philadelphia, PA 19107 (39.9492266251764,-75.1634724195656)
180 S Juniper St, Philadelphia, PA 19107 (39.9493563987706,-75.163247023323)

Of course, none of this helps with the fact that the time of the call is at odds with everyone's schedule.

I was going to join the wild odd_duck hunt this weekend, but some car troubles grounded me in NJ. It seems I didn't miss much, but it would have been nice to meet some beekeepers. Thank you Peccable & Rowan for putting in the effort.

odd_duck and the_labyrinth are showing as 'Axon Canceled' now... hope we didn't lose our only chance at those clips.

But the clips at the top of the recipe3 page are now live. I put a thread on the General Updates page to discuss.

I am betting we will get new coordinates for the "axon cancelled" clips.

And who are Katy W, Susan A and Zemat, and what did they do that unlocked the new clips? And what does 5.14.77 mean?

Hmm. zemat posted here about an earlier communication with the flea...

5.14.77 was the (fake) version number that the Pious Flea gave Melissa. The trick seems to have been to use it as the subject of the e-mail you sent -- As Astald did with "Creepy" like last time. As the Sleeping Princess said, when the Flea asked her what her friends should transmit instead of Creepy: "Crewmember, What Is Your Version Number!"

Curiously I didn't use PF fake version number as the subject line but instead I used the quote by SP. I'm still bothered by that fact. I feel I don't deserve the honor.

Anyone know exactly how our security did get compromised? I mean, what happened that would make her stop broadcasting this stuff?

That's from when the Queen caught the SP and found the recipe3 hiding place. Which is why SP doesn't just put them up anymore. I guess theoretically the Queen is still hiding stuff there and SP is (via the contactme.html page) getting us the wavs.
