So the mainstream media starts to pick up on the backlash, which leads me to wonder: in light of the old saw about "no publicity is bad publicity," will said backlash discourage such tactics in the future, or in fact encourage them? I haven't met a single person who enjoys receiving SPAM, and yet that dubious marketing tactic becomes more ubiquitous every day.

In some ways, this shill type of viral marketing seems slightly less horrid in that it generally gets aimed at an actual target audience that may be receptive to the marketing message, rather than just blanket-sprayed across the 'Net without regard to anything except the final number of recipients.
