True, true. At this point, we can only hope that ILB or Halo 2 will provide the answer.

I think you missed the point of my post. There's really no need to spell out specifically how the Covenant knows, because H2 is sorta the Cov invasion of Earth.

If the Good Guys want to hide something, the Bad Guys will inevitably find it. The Cov find Earth because thats where Man grew up.

I dunno, that feels kinda flimsy seeing as how the location of Earth is a major plot point in Halo 1. Makes much of what the PoA went through seem kinda meaningless if Bungie footnoted it with "but the Covenant just find out anyway".

Consider the detail Bungie seems to like to put into Halo's backstory, that one seems a large hole begging to be filled.

Exactly. We've got it hammered into us that there's the Cole Protocol, and that any Human vessel has to make sure they never ever ever ever ever ever evar find Earth..

...and yet they do anyway.

If H2 contains information that implies or points out that Jjaro/Forerunner and Humanity are related, they answer the question. If H2 contains information that implies or points out that the Covenant discover planetary systems because of symbols on Forerunner crystals, they answer the question. Hell, ILB might be the How the Cov Finds Earth story.

But H2 is about defeating the Cov and explaining why they are so cheesed off with us. Not their logistics in discovering how they found Earth.

OK, the Iroquois (Keyes' original ship), on it's way out of the Sigma Octanus system, got tagged by this covenant spy drone thingamabob. It then went to reach where the covenant followed. I'm guessing that it headed out of system before the battle above the planet, maybe back to Earth. (All in The Fall of Reach)
In First Strike, Cortana intercepts Covanent transmissions on their BattleNet, after dissemination of the transmissions she discovers the Covanent are on their way to Sol (Earth). But no explanation of how they got those co-ords is forthcoming. I think that maybe when Keyes was captured on Halo and tortured, he told the Covanent the location of Earth.

But after Keys gets interrogated, the elite leaves upset, and the grunt notices that the human somehow seemed to "win"
This to me shows that Keys didn't give up earth's location

Sorry, the books are at home, or I'd do some real quoting

I was told that Bungie was working on two project, but the only one they have announced anything for is Halo 2.

I believe that this is a means of advertising their other project. With the release date of Halo 2 so close, I would think that this will continue past Halo 2. I think that with the release of Halo 2, more clues and what not for this ARG will come along (like with the game). This other project of Bungie's can totally be in the Haloverse, it just doesn't specifically need to run with MC.

Only speculation. I am more interested in the ARG aspect then the Halo aspect, as I haven't read the books and I only beat Halo once.

From Reach they jumped to Halo (following the coordinates that Cortana identified from the artifact), not earth. The series ends with them leaving there and heading to the confrontation in First Strike. There is no indication that they ever get near Earth in any of the books.

Exactly what I was thinking when I created this thread.

But it was the Pillar of Autumn that jumps to Halo, not the Iroquois. It doesn't say where the Iroquois goes before/after Reach is destroyed.

The elite that leaves upset is the one looking for the Master Chief, not looking for info on Earth. He leaves upset beacause Keyes dares the alien to shoot him, but knows he can't due to the vital info. he has. This (obviously) angers the elite, and he walks away pretty unhappy.

Hope this clears up my post.

from Fall of Reach: the spy drone

Just so everyone is up on this, the spy drone hidden among all the debris from the battle around Sigma Octanus, attaches to the Iroquois, which is on the way to Reach to undergo repairs. Opening a photo eye, the
spy drone collects data about its position for several days, then transmits a message through a Slipspace field to a Covenant receiver.

This is from The Fall of Reach by Eric Nyland pp 215-216.

I think we can assume that this isn't the only Covenant drone around.

Nice! It could be Jan's story.

Actually, what I heard is that it's Command &Conquer in Halo's universe. (I guess too many people were complaining about not being able to give the marines orders) So far, I've heard that it's dubbed Halo-gen. I think that's supposed to be out sometime next year, but don't quote me! All I've heard is rumors from my boyfriend, so make of it what you will.

Sorry, I'm quoting you... Razz

the C&C type game that Bungie partially developed is infact Halo. It changed to an FPS in early-mid 2000.

Official Halo Backstory wrote:

So that's the basic backstory of Halo. All that happens before the game begins. And again the game of Halo is a 3rd person action game; it's all about action from minute to minute. It tells the story of you, one person alone, with your friends, with weapons, with vehicles, fighting a guerrilla war against a fairly overwhelming alien force.

Halo's Evolution

Exactly. I've also had this thought, because the last time Bungie did anything like this was with the Cortana letters. I could be wrong, but I believe at the time people thought that Halo was the next Marathon game. (Which it isn't--not directly, anyway.) I've been wondering if the whole ILB is something similar, like--as Atrophied said--a build-up to a Halo RTS, which would be pretty cool.

Then again, so would Marathon IV. Very Happy
