[SPEC] the cause of the communications blackout

super-ultra-rampant spec here:

the blackout was caused by one of 2 things:

a) Durga being shot over to Jersey's sytem

b) Jan tripping some sort of alarm that blacked out the base and sent the security into "threat condition"

could they be the same event? could Jan have done something that accidently unleashed Durga? could it have been on purpose? someone other than her father sent her in to do a job?

The power interrupt happened before the blip on the security board; however, grammatically speaking:

"There's a blip on the security board"
"Holy Crap"
"We've got an intrudder, C-Wing."

The blip wasen't a "blip" in the sense of there and it's not, grammatically speaking, that blip was there like a radar blip.

seriously, what are you people listening to? you would think that sci fi/general nerds such as ourselves would understand a term like blip, in the context its used, and not even have to think about what the hell they're talking about. too many people are trying TOO hard, and not just thinking logically here.

spanke,

I'm speaking from experience: in terms of radar when you say "blip" it means an object that was there when the radar wave was bounced back. Usually, with something that just disappears, you say "the blip just disappeared."

kat, i'm TOTALLY agreeing w/ you. i was referring to coffeejedis incredibly odd and offbase thinking. i believe the blip can be nothing more than referring to the radar. i suppose my post may have led you to believe i was talking about yours being wrong, but i was just adding that it was right and coffeejedi was not so much. thanks for trying to call me out though!

ok.... to clarify then

the blip, ahem

the blackout basically, all 3 dramas start in an instant when communication equipment goes all wonky, the AI appears on Jersey's system, Kamal and Hiro lose communication, and a blackout alerts security to Jan's presence

if we conjencture that that was one single moment in time... what caused it?

I blame durga...... Just simply because if durga is from the future (or past you never know) that jump threw time might create a power surger or whatnot. And So far the Arg be bassed on this AI, so I'm gonna guess AI coincides with AI. I really needed to dig deep for that one Laughing

But those really seem like three seperate events, not like one. Why would Durga cause a power outage?

And there's something odd from the military blackout I don't get:

"If it weren't for the blackout we'd never had seen her"

Doesn't that seem ... contradictory?

Jan is breaking into the millitary base, for reasons we do not know yet. On the security system when an intruder is detected it shows up as a blip on the screen. Jan causes the massive power interupt, thats how she gets passed some of the security measures.

I would copy and paste it but that would be pointless I think.

I didn't think of it all at once so you have to read the whole page I'm 'fraid.

I think my theory explains large chunks of stuff. Judge for yourself...

When the system prob reboots, they do a diagnostick's check obviously they would've missed her because they weren't paying too much attention.

No, it's not contradictory at all. When the power went out (so to speak) the alarm system restarted in a higher state of alert. House alarms do the same thing - when power is cut they tend to start wailing, which is why you quite often hear burglar alarms going off when there is a power cut. Or imagine the security system at a jail - when it goes into a higher state of alert things like spotlights might get turned on.

So, we can speculate that when the alarm system started in a higher state of alert it enabled sensors or cameras that were until that point inert, and one of those picked up Jan. Were it not for the power cut (or whatever it was), she would have slipped past undetected. It's not really even speculation per se; Frank and his associate say as much.

I agree with Nova. I think Jan was discovered because of the blackout. She'd be the blip, discovered during the scanning procedures for Threat Condition Bravo.

The question now becomes...what caused the blackout.

I think it may be some currently unknown force at work in the story, but I have recently been entertaining an interesting idea.

Could Durga have engineered the blackout? Is that the something better she's providing for Jersey? Nah, doesn't seem to fit.

Durga's goal would have been to spy on Jan, we don't have any reason to think she would want her captured.

Unless Durga's goal was get Jan's DNA captured by the police.

edit: except it's Jersey's idea to go after Jan ... not Durga's.
