Ick. I'm still hoping for a less evil solution, but the Queen has shown us no mercy in DC so far. Searching the web for a station map came up empty (probably removed for "national security"), so it's going to be a little hard to coordinate (I'll see if I can draw something up when I get home tonight). It may be wise to station two people by the AuBon Pain for one more day just to try and catch what we can from that bank.
The phones outside gate a/b were covered from 12:19 to 12:31. The phones outside c/d were covered from 12:23 to 12:31. (Mike_Was, please correct me if I have that wrong).

Okay, new [SPEC] based on today's Union Station trip: All the axons from 9:11 to 9:31 will ring among the phones at a single bank of phones. The phone bank is located across from the Au bon Pain restaurant at the back of the Station. Some phones in the bank are marked with "no incoming calls." Below is a graphic depicting the phone bank; phones that do not accept incoming calls are marked with a "-" symbol, and phones that do accept incoming calls are marked with a "+" symbol and numbered from 1 to 6. Only one axon was enhottenated today, the 9:31 at phone # 2

If this [spec] is correct, it will require multiple trips, or multiple people, or both to get all these axons.

Note that the phones appear to ring once, and must be picked up on the ring. Picking up after the ring leads to dead air, so speed is necessary. Also note that the audio for this axon is appropriate: (paraphrased from bad memory) "Payphone, what's that? Ancient technology... half of them don't accept incoming calls and no GPS..."

More [spec]: 12 phones, 12 axons, only half of those phones accept incoming calls (just like the audio). It may be that we'll only get 6 of those axons hot (just enough to unlock the .wav file) because only 6 accept incoming calls. And if that's the case, the PM must have somebody on the ground in DC scouting the phones.

Chappy - sweet graphic. what are you using to generate your gfx?

Anyway, if you want a map of Union Station, try my illegal kiosk photograph: http://www.perpetualbeta.com/ilb/ilb-Pages/Image0.html

Anyway, Cortana and I are done for today, and we're both beat like Ike Tuner was our pimp. Our final count, we think, is 8 in the bag, 2 dumps, a couple we just couldn't get to in time (14th and Const.) and numerous frustrations in the belly of the Beast.

Some of these files, by the way, are well worth the effort to unlock. We'll be posting transcriptions as soon as we can.

Chappy, I just PM'd you my bad gif of the station and phone locations. Use it for reference if nothing else.

Union Station Hell Redux

I was just looking at the Blackforge list and realized that for uvular_implants we only need three more out of five - two of those are Manassas, and 14th & Constitution.

Of course, _optical_ is our U.S. block and the Charlotte block they can't find.

But, we can still get two more on uvular_implants since they are ones we've gotten before. Just a thought.

Manassas needs either Krempasky or a wait until this weekend. Or someone can take another day off...

Way to go, team! Cortana and Mike_Was went above and beyond, hitting 8 axons (and Union Station) and activating 6 (plus one in Union Station)!

The DC reference page has been updated with today's results (12 of 30 complete).
These are the axons that still need to be activated:

06:43 (9:43 EST) "13th and Jefferson Drive" big_dog (2/6)
09:43 (12:43 EST) "14th and Constitution" uvular_implants (2/5)
10:05 (1:05 EST) "12th and C (East)" slingbacks (3/9)
10:29 (1:29 EST) "Union Station" slingbacks (3/9)
15:43 (6:43 EST) "Smithsonian" cheerleaders (3/5)
16:15 (7:15 EST) "Wendys" twenty_percent (0/2)
16:19 (7:19 EST) "Connecticut and K" box_of_chocolates (3/7)

And the eleven calls in the 9:11 to 9:31 block at Union Station, of course. Sad

I know that there was noise on the 6:43 call this morning, was it the same for the 10:05? Okay, Union Station. <sigh> You may notice a link on the status page to a new page, the Union Station reference page. The diagram there is based on Mike_Was and Aliendial's pictures; thanks guys. I may refine it more the next time I visit the station, but suggestions welcome. Do my phone bank labels and numbering system make sense?

My own schedule is pretty ugly tomorrow, so I'm not sure which axons I'll be able to hit if any. I don't think I can do Union Station, but I'll definitely try Thursday.

PS> Mike, I do the graphics in Photoshop (sat/map images, simple diagrams) and Illustrator (union station map).

Yeah, AD had a meeting instead of the 16:19 axon, but did manage the 17:09 Georgetown Cinema. Also caught Resident Evil 2. Um. Dumb.

Where Mike was standing, you can hear all of the D-F phones and the Info phones. So the ones he heard off to the side are either the rental car phones or the ones at H-J (unlikely sound would travel that far).

Your map only has one out of 4 sets of Metro phones. There is another entrance (what I called Metro south) outside the main hall entrance (exterior escalators). (sorta parallel to America). It has a set of map phones in the farecard area. There is an exit from that level into the lower level of Union Station, and there is a bank of phones right inside that door, which do not (tested) accept incoming calls. Thankfully, there are no more phones on the lower level of Union Station.

At the North Metro entrance you have marked the ones at ground level of Union Station but there is another map set down the short escalator in the station there. And 30 feet away, inside the metro gates, is another set of 2 map phones.

I did not see another set of phones on the other side of the ticketing area. But I was trying not to hang around the transit police kiosk there. I feel certain they have pictures of us and are wondering what the hell we are up to.

Phones in any restaurant but America are not confirmed (unless you checked today). Mike says there is at least one inside America.

Cortana's summary of Union Station

Cortana's summary:

Quote:
Here's the list of numbers:

1: 202.789.9189 (No Incoming Calls)
2: 202.789.9185 GOOD
3: 202.789.9148 (No Incoming Calls)
4: 202.789.9135 GOOD
5: 202.789.9195 (10 second cutoff, bad earpiece)
6: 202.789.9149 (No Incoming Calls)
7: 202.789.9333 (10 second cutoff)
8: 202.789.9336 (No Incoming Calls)
9: 202.789.9334 (No Incoming Calls)
10: 202.789.9196 (No Incoming Calls)
11: 202.789.9335 (10 second cutoff, bad earpiece)
12: 202.789.9196 (No Incoming Calls)

My hastily scribbled notes indicate the following:

9:11 - 202-789-9195 - rang, cut off when picked up
9:13 - 202 789-9333 - rang, cut off after 10 sec.
9:15 - 202 789-9335 - rang, but the earpiece is not working so no sound

No other rings there, but some dude in a suit was on -9135 the entire time we were there. We believe this is 9:27 or thereabouts.

All NIC/broken phones/short cut-offs were duplicated with subsequent testing. Broken phones have been reported to Verizon. (Interestingly, other prospective pay-phone users were swearing at the poor maintenance of the phones...)

At this point I don't know what to do except camp on -9135 and at least get the one we know works. We will need to stake out the rental car counter, as I'm fairly sure I heard a ring there yesterday. No rings where Chappy and I camped yesterday, so we may clear those banks for those times.

Looking like "optical" is gonna be a pipe dream.

Oh, yeah, Cortana emailed Dana about our troubles. Personally, I'd like to introduce the Queen to the ILOVE.b virus, but that's just me.

Wendy's for dinner.

Axon s'mores for dessert.

16:15 is hot, and twenty_percent is unlocked.

Aliendial, was it you who got the 16:19 yesterday? Thanks to Mike_Was, there are only four left (besides the Union Station "dirty dozen"):

06:43 (9:43 EST) "13th and Jefferson Drive" big_dog (4/6)
09:43 (12:43 EST) "14th and Constitution" uvular_implants (2/5)
10:05 (1:05 EST) "12th and C (East)" slingbacks (6/9)
15:43 (6:43 EST) "Smithsonian" cheerleaders (3/5)

I'll swing by Union Station today during lunch and stake out the Rental Car desk, and I can get the 15:43 Smithsonian on my way home today. If slingbacks gets to 8/9, or uvular_implants gets to 4/5, I can one or the other tomorrow.

14th and Constitution is tough b/c it follows so closely on the heels of Union Station. It's really not possible to get there in the allotted time. Maybe we should go for the low-hanging fruit?

Well, maybe we need to hit Manassas. i could do it Friday, but it would be the only one I get to and I'll be out of town Sat - Mon.

BTW, CableDawg was in #beekeepers the other night. He said he could help out this weekend. I hope he's able to do that.

I'm thinking I should still concentrate on Union Station, only because there are so many axons in one place at one time (and optical.wav will depend on it). But my priorities will change if getting the low-hanging fruit means activating a sound file.

whoo hoo! Success in Union Station. Cortana, Mike_Was and I got 10 of the 12 axons hot! I think it was Cortana 4, Mike_Was 3, and Chappy 3 in the end. All the calls except the 9:15 were phones by the rental agencies and vending machines (calls seemed to come in at 1 group of four phones, move to the next group of four, then the next, and the next, and then back). Special props to Cortana for getting the 9:15 hot despite a broken phone. optical.wav and uvular_implants.wav unlocked.
