Mike_Was, my work schedule looks pretty ugly tomorrow and Friday, I probably won't be able to escape to assist the Spout Run call.

Kakashi117, note that the 17:03 (8:03pm EST) phone went hot tonight. EDIT: Aliendial got this one

For the Thursday hunters, there are seven axons left in our area:
06:27 (9:27 EST) Union Station (phone not found)
06:51 (9:51 EST) Route 236 (phone not found)
11:41 (2:41 EST) Spout Run (phone not found... yet Smile )
12:07 (3:07 EST) 14th and Constitution
12:11 (3:11 EST) Route 234
13:11 (4:11 EST) Washington Harbor
14:33 (5:33 EST) 13th and Jefferson Drive
Check the DC reference page for maps and directions.

Note that we can unlock a sound file if we get the 11:41 Spout Run. We'll unlock another if we get both the 12:07 Constitution and 12:11 Route 234. The early morning calls (6:27 and 6:51) should still be considered, but we can relax about the 13:11 Washington Harbor, since the sound file is unlocked.

Good News and Bad News

Good news and bad news about the 6:51. I couldn't get there when it went hot, but I went later to scope it out. I found the phone.

Bad news: we won't be able to get to it.

The coordinates are the front of a residential apartment complex, so I knew it would have to be in one of the common areas of that complex. It's right by the swimming pool.

Unfortunately, that swimming pool is closed off to all non-residents, and closed off even to residents until well after that axon rings in the morning. So there is no way to get it.

Chappy, you can see the swimming pool in the satellite photo, about halfway between the GPS marker and the water tower, and just a smidge to the east, so you can mark it there.

I scouted out the area in case there were other phones - there are no operable pay phones within a quarter mile of there. Even the phones at Woodson High (lower right corner of satellite photo) are out of commission. (tested by me).

I'm going to email the Sleeping Princess and see if we can't get a new phone put in there.

Spout Run and 14th and Constitution

Mission Accomplished.

Spout Run turned out to be the single phone in the middle. This was the last axon needed to unlock would_that_help.

14th and Constitution was easy. I got there about 15 minutes early, (yes, I drive that fast) parked a couple of blocked away, and camped. Phone rang clearly, easy to hear, and I got a tape of s_typhi. (See attachment) Of course, with all the "hardware failures" the mp3 ain't so hot. s_typhi was unlocked by our good friends in Texas. Tip o' the ten gallon to them.

Tomorrow, maybe Manassas? The file has been unlocked, so I'm not going to worry about 12:11. Maybe next cycle won't have us chasing axons in the boonies. (yeah, right)

Applause for Mike_Was, that's two more down! And Aliendial got the 17:03 last night, so only these are left:

06:27 (9:27 EST) Union Station (phone not found)
06:51 (9:51 EST) Route 236 (phone impossible to answer)
12:11 (3:11 EST) Route 234 (sound file already unlocked)
13:11 (4:11 EST) Washington Harbor (sound file already unlocked)
14:33 (5:33 EST) 13th and Jefferson Drive (sound file already unlocked)

Check the DC reference page for maps and directions.

I'll still be out of action tomorrow, and Aliendial is busy; anyone want to try for the above? I'll try to pick up some on Saturday

kakashi should still try to get Washington Harbor this weekend. Waste not, want not. And I think Mike_Was is going back to the Dept of Agriculture, so unless Melissa is still messing with us that should be done today.

Manassas - only if you're going to a concert. I'll ask cortana if his friend is a saint and could do this one again.

6:51 - EdifYo and pa128pilot both thought the phone would be in the Fair City Mall/Plaza whatever it is. (How far is this from the condo pool Mike_Was found?) Pa128piplot also apparently spent some time on school property across the street - either way, a tough "get".

I went to Wilmington yesterday on Amtrak and looked around Union Station as I passed through - unless there are payphones inside the America restaurant, no phones right where the coordinates are. No phones outside the building.

I didn't see phones in the mall area (didn't check it all), but of course back in the train area there are huge banks of phones between the various gates.

One possibility - there is of course a subway station there (Red Line) and we know how much Melissa is likin' those subway phones.

Dept. of Ag? I thought we nailed both of those. Unless you're talking about 14:33, which I can get on Saturday.

I spoke to Cortana's friend (who, if he had a nick, would be RtWngr). He's been out sick from work and probably can't get it. s_typhi is already unlocked anyway, so probably a low priority.

There are three pay phones in front of the school - all out of order. The mall is a good quarter-mile away, and when I drove through, there didn't seem to be any pay phones nearby. The coords are right where the address of the apartment complex would be, so I have a high level of confidence that it's the right phone.

The payphone directory says that there are phone banks near gates C and G, and a lot at "track level" whatever that means. The Metro station will definitely have phones, and I would bet that's where they are. If I'd realized that before now I probably would have gone to try it this morning.

Union Station: There are phone banks between most of the gates - and more individual phones in the halls leading to the commuter trains that I could see from inside.

Yes 14:33 is in front of the Main Agriculture building on the Mall. Not one of the ones at 12th & C. So you'll get it this weekend - good.

I bow to your scouting efforts re the phone on 236.

I suppose the next question is who knows people in cities with axons that are needed to unlock sound files. And knows them well enough to get them to find and answer strange phones....

Personally I think we have done our bit. And I really want to thank you Mike for stepping up and taking on all these axons this week. Hopefully the next set we can really knock out quick with all these resources, without playing hooky from work.

New DC Axons - 9/10/04 killer.jpg update

Good news - next week's axons are all repeats from the current wave. I have used the names from Chappy's map for those which appear on it. More good news - the pool phone from Rte. 236 is not on the list, nor is Union Station. Guess the PM's are reading the boards. Ok, apparently this list is woefully incomplete.

6:15 38.9018 -77.060283 - Wash Harbor
6:43 38.888633 -77.0297 - 13th and Jeff
6:55 38.896207 -77.09657 - Spout Run
7:15 37.505053 -77.628617 - way south. Richmond.
7:21 38.88885 -77.0244 - Carousel
7:23 38.897533 -77.017167 - Building Museum
8:13 38.890469 -77.026 - Natural History
8:43 38.90325 -77.033133 - Vermont Avenue
11:11 38.88525 -77.028167 - 12th and C (West)
13:52 38.891968 -77.019898 - National Gallery
14:37 39.1879 -77.7977 - Loudon County
14:51 38.884992 -77.015325 - Federal Center
14:53 39.404469 -77.428227 - Frederick, MD
15:39 38.881044 -77.111586 - Ballston
15:43 38.88725 -77.02915 - Smithsonian
16:15 38.808022 -77.087309 - Wendys
16:19 38.902804 -77.039475 - Connecticut and K
17:09 38.902718 -77.061362 - Georgetown Cinema

EDIT: AD, No agony at all... just searching for the coords on Chappy's map and my own text list from last week. Once we tatertot the rest of this week's, we should plan for next week.

Wait for fabulich to post mapped coordinates to theblackforge. Save yourself the agony.

PS OMG there are two hour-long blocks of multiple axons all on the same phone. One is the Union Station one. The PMs seem to be insisting.

Mike_Was will (right?) try the subway one tomorrow. I guess I'll try to get in America tomorrow, although I'm not sure they are open for breakfast. (They serve omelettes, so maybe....). I'll see if they have any payphones.

Kaziel, we need to know exactly which phones you staked out last week. Whatever's left we can maybe try on Sunday.

Tuesday's Axons

Here's the pared down Excel sheet for all of Tuesdays axons. I'm gonna be back in DC, FINALLY, so I am planning to take the day off to hunt axons. Does someone want to help me plot them all on Sunday?

Cort, I suggest we let chappy display the new axons with his loverly DC axon page. All he has to do is reorganize existing info with the new times. Or quick cross-reference, just compare new coords to our two charts:

6:15 Washington Harbor
6:43 Jefferson Dr. in front of Main Agriculture
6:55 Spout Run, slightly adjusted?
7:21 Carousel
7:23 National Building Museum
8:13 Natural History, Mall side
8:43 Vermont bet. K&L
11:11 12th & C "west"
13:52 National Gallery
14:51 3rd & D Federal Center Metro
15:39 Ballston Metro
15:43 Smithsonian Metro
16:15 Wendy's Alexandria
16:19 Connecticut & K
17:09 Georgetown Cinema

This list is missing the Union Station grouping reported in another thread. (not on fabulich's list yet, I guess)

There's a morning block on the mall, with gaps into the afternoon. With time for someone on a bike to reach out for a couple more. Someone at home in Virginia could squeeze those in among errands - they;re far enough apart.

Union Station Hell

OK. I went to scout out Union Station this evening in preparation for tomorrow and next week.

The restaurants, namely America, Thunder Grill, and Uno's, each have payphones in or near the bathrooms but none of those open before 11:00 a.m. so they can't be this week's axon. (well, they COULD, but...)

That leaves the phones in the Metro stop and those throughout Union Station. I have a strong hunch about the Metro stop, but if that's not it, we're screwed like a Boston altar boy.

I took some pictures. Yes, the day before Sept. 11, I wandered around a major transportation hub taking pictures of maps and infrastructure. Loitering tomorrow should also be great fun. Anyway, on to the analysis.

There are six major groups of phones inside, but not all of them can be covered by one person since at least on of them is *quite* long. The station map shows five phone banks on the street level and one bank on the lower level. This is somewhat accurate.

Moving from left to right on the street level map (see the pink area) there is one group of 12 phones next to Au Bon Pain, marked correctly on that map. The next one immediately to the right is not there, as that area has been blocked off for construction. Its mirror image is baggage carousel #1, which faces Gate F near the shoe-shine stand.

The back wall is covered with phone, marked on the map as one bank but actually two or more stretching from Gate B to Gate E near the Acela lounge. There are also two phones on the wall opposing that back wall near Gate E, but someone standing in the pictured area would be able to hear them as tehy ring loudy and clearly. I estimate that covering the back wall would take at least two, probably three people fora single axon, or one person over two or three different tries.

The last group on street level is inside the triangle formed by Gate G, the rental car counters, and McDonald's. There are about twelve phones there as well.

The final set of three phones is on the lower level just at the entrance to the Metro. (These are NOT the Metro station phones!)

All these phones attract heavy use; during the lunch hour next week it will be nearly impossible to keep them clear.

Tomorrow morning I'll hit the phones in the Metro station itself; I can confirm or eliminate that bank. If anyone else wants to join me we should cover the largest banks first since the odds seems best there. Cortana and I are planning some lunches there next week to keep coverage up.

PM or AIM me if you'd like to come along; we can exchange cell phone numbers.

I'll take a group tomorrow (Saturday) and confirm here. PM my cell to you. You'll be in the subway, I'll take a group up near the gates. And try to look innocent too. Smile

This is what kaziel said about his one attempt last week. I can't tell which phones he hit:

Quote:
I looked over the station map and saw 2 locations (I missed the 3rd one, so sue me.), and going to the first, I saw it was outgoing call only on 2 of the 3 phones there, so I went to the 4 booths of phones, each with 4 phones on it. Waiting until the time, no phones rang, but one of the phones was in use, so that might explain it.

Kaz hit either the Au Bon Pain group or the rental car group, most likely the latter since that is 4 groups of 4.

There were only 2 groups of three that I saw, and the only one on that street level, the baggage carousel #1 group, is right arounf the corner from the rental car group. So that suggests he looked at the baggage claim first, then moseyed around the corner to hit the other group.

Good to know.

I hit up the rental car group. Note: as you are looking at the pics the 3rd booth away and the phone you can see on the left hand side (I pointed it out with the photo) was being used at the time of the call, so it's possible that it's that one as well...
