No Joy in Union Station

Aliendial and I hit Union Station today with no luck but we came away with lots of recon.

The Metro Station phones are emphatically not it. I camped there for about five extra minutes and no ring. Aliendial staked out the phones between Gates D and E near the Acela lounge. No ring there.

The phones on the lower level do not take incoming calls, so we can eliminate everything downstairs.

The phones near the baggage carousel tested negative for incoming calls as well.

This leaves four separate banks of phones plus some in the restaurants. In my recon I missed the bank that was near Gate J - so that's one bank. The Au Bon Pain group is still possible, and it's towards the coordinates. The Gate B group is still possible, and the rental car phones are still possible because, as Kaziel noted, there's that one phone that might be it.

If none of those hit, we'll have to start scoping restaurant bathrooms on Tuesday. (Fun!)

Of the remaining banks, about one-third accept incoming calls. The phones that were marked "No Incoming Calls" (look for the yellow notice on the volume button) uniformly tested negative for incoming calls. So if you're camping and someone wants to use a phone, point them at one of those.

It will really help if we can get some more beekeepers there tomorrow. AD and I will be there, Cortana probably can't be, so who else can make it?

(Oh, and I noticed today that photography is strictly prohibited in Union Station. Whee!)

Re Union Station - those are the accessible phones. There are, according to one of the payphone sites, a bunch of phones on the platforms. These most likely are on platforms for the MD and VA commuter trains (MART and VRE). These platforms are accessible only to ticket holders. We can see a few such phones through the doors to those platforms, but we are not interested in attracting any more attention than we already are, hovering around a transportation hub. If there are phones on the Amtrak platforms, similar problems getting access....

And we figure, unless we get lucky today, there will be only a few more public phone banks left to check Tuesday before the axon is found, or (worst case) one pissed restaurant manager who wants to know why they got 10 prank calls in a row....

Hmmm. Maybe there will be a red balloon?

Forgot to note - Mike also took another stab at the one on Jefferson Drive in front of Agriculture. Some mega festival is going on this weekend such that cars were not leaving the mall at 5:30 like all good tourists should, but in fact were arriving for something at the festival, and the Park Police blocked off Jefferson Drive! So I couldn't get there. Anyway, it may be that despite previous successful hotenating, this phone is broken -you can hear the call but there is a lot of interference. Mike got dumped too and he says the clicking noise that I heard earlier in the week was audible on the line even before the call from Melissa. Hate to let this go...

Report from Cortana and Mike_Was at the Appalachian Trail axon.

1. Mapquest location is wrong except for the part about the last section not being paved; fortunately their GPS helped them over the last bit.

2. This is a private club deep in the woods. They use the payphone as their business phone, so all communications come this way, and the phone is always answered. The nice people there have been kinda irritated to keep getting these calls.

3. Someone got this axon week 1; not sure about week 2; Mike_Was and Cortana got it today. (Unlocked "winning" clip) Mike and Cortana have promised that if the axon shows up again they will call and tell the club how to stop it the first time, and hopefully Melissa will take note and stop bothering them because the axon is nice and hot now. Whoever got this axon in week one should have done this too.

Appalachian Trailhead Axon

MikeWas and I have just returned from the 9:45 axon at:

39.1879 / -77.7977

We were successful in enhottenating the axon there. The payphone is located at the Potomac Appalachian Trail Center (PATC) in their enclosed picnic location. We were greeted by Sara and Bill who run the Trail Center and serve as stewards of the trail in the area. They were glad to let us answer the phone so it will stop ringing.

Apparently, it's been waking up their daughter during her nap each day, and as any parent here can attempt, disturbing naptime is a critically bad thing.

So, Melissa [edit - in game reference ;) - AD], if you're reading this (and I will seek some other method of transfering this message) please DO NOT BUG THESE NICE PEOPLE.

Okay. That is all.

The trek out to the axon took us on highway, toll road, state highway, road, dirt road, gravel road and farm trail. The axon itself sits just 1/4 mile from the Appalachian Trail on the VA/WV border just to the south of Harpers' Ferry.

We took a nice picnic lunch with us. We took pictures and video. More is forthcoming once MikeWas gets the pictures download.

Hello, newbie here. Has anyone tried to get the zip_your_shirt axon in Fairfax? I can't find the phone to save my life. I also noticed that the coords for tack_hammer are the same. Did anyone ever find that one? I live .5 mi away from this one so its kind of annoying that it hasn't been knocked out yet

EDIT: Just saw the remark about the payphone being in the swimming pool area. If that is correct, I live less than 500ft from that payphone. Is this axon still going to be active tomorrow?

So, CableDawg, what happened? Did you decide not to do it?

EDIT: To remove hysteria.

Based on the posts here, I've entered the new comatas times into the database, they're now listed on the DC reference page. I'll check out the round 4 thread and add any additional times tonight, as well as populate the heading times for this week's hunting.

DC Pay Phone Regulations

I found D.C.'s pay phone regulations online at http://www.dcpsc.org/pdf_files/consumerservices/paytelephonerules.pdf. (PDF)

I wonder if we might be able to review the public records for pay phones in a certain area before the weekend, maybe to better assess how many phones there are. (Private space telephone registrations must include a photo of the location)

Also, I observe that none of the pay phones in Union Station comply with the disclosure requirements of Rule 609.2. I say we report 'em, either for spite or in the hopes they all get shut down before the next wave of axons. Twisted Evil

Per the scope provision, this only applies to outside payphones unless it expressly states otherwise. So I don't think 609.2 governs. But let's stop talking like lawyers and focus on those truly at fault. Twisted Evil

I'm going to get the 14:33 outside of the agriculture building; it's one more towards 777 even if the .wav file is unlocked.

Having pooled our data about what phones we (Mike and I) tried this weekend with kaziel's data from earlier, we still have bunches of phones to cover at Union Station.

Fortunately, we'll have 10 opportunities a day this week until we find it or someone reports the phone for suspicious behavior.

Not tried yet:

- 4 sets of 3 outside Au Bon Pain
- Group of about 6 at gates H-J
- Restaurant phones - America, Thunder Grill, B.Smith's
(we assume all three have payphones inside somewhere; not confirmed)

Quibbles in data - revisit if those above don't pan out:

- Group of phones at Gates A-B reported quiet by civilians; professional axon hunters may get different results.
- 1 phone was in use when kaziel did the set near the car rental booth.
- 1 phone upstairs by the north metro entrance is very quiet. I could hear all the others in that set and down in the station, but not that one. So it might be the one too.
- phones inside metro station - one set was just 30 feet away from the outside set; if their phones had decent volume I should have heard them too. If there are more deeper in the station, didn't see them.

Was it broken before? I had no problems with the phone today; I'd never been to it before (13th and Jefferson), but there was nothing out of the ordinary. I checked prior to the time and it accepts calls; loud ring, no noise on the line, and it enhottenated easily. Got a weird look from the guy in the black SUV with black-tinted windows, though. Guess I look harmless. Smile

Yeah, both Mike and I got lots of interference on the line this week. Mike reported the noise was there even before Melissa called so we decided it really was a phone problem. Hmmm. /me gets suspicious again. Wink
