[SPEC] Pious Flea and reflection issues...

Durga and Jersey speak often of the "reflection issues" that prevent the AI from knowing or learning more about who/what she is.

from reflected.wave:
Quote:

Jersey: No! Don't start. Those guys have packet guards around them in rings. Somehow I think we should keep you a secret for a little while. Who are you?
Durga: I... can't ask
Jersey: Who says?
Durga: No one exactly. I want to know, it's very important. But, I'm reflected. I can't look at myself, I bounce away.

In the newer wavs, more is made of this reflection. Regarding her interest in Kamal and his nefarious endeavours:
Quote:

Jersey: It's happening again?
Durga: Yes.
Jersey: The reflecting thing?
Durga: Yes.
Jersey: You arn't supposed to want to know why you want to know about this guy, you know?
Durga: yes.
Jersey: And that bugs the hell out of you.
Durga: I am a very curious girl.

Again, with regards to her interest in bees:
Quote:

Jersey: Bees?
Durga: Yes.
Jersey: Why?
Durga: I don't know.
Jersey: That's like, creepy.
Durga: Yes.
Jersey: This is more reflection stuff, isn't it?
Durga: Yes.
Jersey: Huh. When I was little, we had this mirror in the bathroom, I used to hide behind the door and jump out and see if i could catch my reflection doing something interesting.
Durga: Startle it.
Jersey: Before I had time, it'd just, you know, mirror me.
Durga: You think that's what I'm doing?
Jersey: Well, the thing is, you have to jump out awful fast.
Durga: Yes.

Sorry for the quote spam, but it all seemed germane. The last quote seems the most important. Jersey and Durga seemed to be working out a way around the mirror effect. And this got me thinking about some things the Princess said in her 8/26 404 msg:
Quote:

But just then I saw that on the wall next to her, the Queen had hung a HUGE
mirror. She must have put it there on purpose to catch me spying! She spun
around like a top, WHIZZ, and lurched toward me. I skedaddled back down the
stairs lickety-split and tumbledy-thump, wishing I was made of fluff, bump,
bump, bump, and at the bottom I put on my speediest feet and zoomed off
while she buzzed and roared and squealed all through the castle trying to
catch me.

It might be just standard mirror imagery, but I think this episode is directly related to what durga and jersey are speaking about. I think the flea and the queen put up the mirror to try and figure out who/what they are. And here some wild spec: the pious flea is Jersey (or at least a representation of jersey's interactions with melissa). There are ramifications of this line of thought: it's forcing me to re-think my view of the queen and the flea, and wholly brings back to question just what the Princess is.

I know this is my first post, but I haven't seen this particular spec around yet and I thought it was worth de-lurking to post about. Feel free to foist upon me whatever freshwater fish you have lying about.

EDIT - Moved thread/topic to "General/Updates" forum from "Puzzles" forum due to [SPEC] label and discussion. - SG

Shocked holy crap! a kilroy with:

1) a well written, well thought-out argument

2) supporting evidence in the form of quotes

3) a brand NEW theory that's not inane or rediculous

4) no mention whatsoever of Master Chief, Cortanna, Cpt. Keyes, the Covenant, or the Forerunners

WOW! Worshippy Worshippy Worshippy

Jersey as the Pious Flea, as interpreted through commands.... while, it seems a bit of a stretch, I honestly can't deny the possibility... its very intriguing, the ONLY flaw is that the Flea's repeated mantra about the truth, it just doesn't jive with Jersey's questions to Durga (yes, i know he's asking for the truth) but its the mantra-like way the Flea repeats himself... commands like !attach !grope make sense, but religous nature of the Fleas's little code wouldn't be generated internally by the computer interpretting Jersey's questions, ya know? am i making any sense here?

Very interesting.

Jersey as the Flea doesn't make much sense to me, but Durga as the Flea is quite possible. Durga is constantly trying to figure out what it is, and it's searching for answers could be interpreted by the SP (whom I believe is Jersey's old AI) and the Queen as the types of commands they are seeing.

This led me into another, slightly different [SPEC], but I'll have to think about it more before posting it up.

Many thanks for the props, and I take your point about the Flea and Jersey seeming completely different in disposition. I admit I got a bit de-railed in my larger point in the post when I thought of the jersey-as-flea idea (one should never think while posting Wink ). Mainly, I wanted to emphasize a possible connection between Durga's reflection issues and Princess' mention of the mirror in her allegory. Jersey's description (and durga's reaction) of the game with the mirror he played as a child just seems so significant. I'm nearly convinced that the Flea or the Princess is an invention in the pursuit of re-creating that game.

I think Jan's dad is the Mater Chief. /joking

Good theory...

one small problem, it's [SPEC] not [PUZZLE] therefore is in the wrong thread. Mods, movement?

Moving Thread

Oops! Sorry! I read it and everything and didn't even notice the forum it was in. I was just so impressed by the proper post labelling and good spec.

On my way to migrate! Thanks for pointing it out, guys!

jackisme, I like it. I've been working on the connection between the future Jersey / Durga story line and what's been happening with Melissa on ilovebees.

The Flea as a representaiton of Jersey? hm.

Check this out for my interpretation of the connection.

Mea culpa for originally posting in the wrong place.

If we think of the Pious Flea as an agent or a process operating at the behest of Jersey, then its mantra-driven nature can still make sense. The mantra could be more a set of principles that guide it in its application and usage of !commands and operations. Or: its frequent spam of those commands could be an overture to the Princess or Queen. "Hello... Talk to me... We are not unlike in kind... Please like me!" Its possible to construct a number of rationales for the Flea's usage of the mantra.

The larger problem with my half-baked theory is the idea of who or what the Princess is at this point. Why does she dislike the Flea? Why is the Flea so interested in her? Those questions are larger than the question of is-Jersey-the-Flea.

Numeric summations of wild speculation seem to be in vogue, so here goes:

1. Jersey is the Flea.
2. The Queen is Durga and possibly/probably Melissa.
3. The Queen doesn't really know what she is.
3. The Flea is therefore benevolent, attempting mainly to help the Queen get around the reflection issues.
4. The Priness is somehow key to the Queen/Durga/Melissa's attempts to uncover her nature/origin.

In any case, there's just not enough data right now to draw any conclusions.

Drat! Stupid German words masquerading as typos! After I so assiduously scanned for spelling mistakes too.

Good one, though.
