[META] I see dead people

This is not a game: high confidence.

I have enjoyed throughout this adventure the nagging feeling that perhaps this is *not* a game. The web sites seem so real! What I'm beginning to wonder, though, is if the TINAG quality hasn't come at the expense of character development.

I realized that I don't care about any of these people we've been introduced to so far. They're all either empty, missing or dead, literally and figuratively. The only character who comes to mind as having a backstory to speak of is Reed Singleton because he has a family member in Ann Starling.

There are no relationships, friendships, laughter, angst, duplicity, human failure, grief, tangible fear, desperation, hope or comedy. (Well, unless that whole list of crossed-out employee names is really a joke...being on April Fool's day and all.)

We know virtually nothing about the characters that have been introduced. They seem not to have any personal history. None of them seem to know anyone else.

I probably want too badly to have memorable characters who a year from now I'll still care about, like Jo Burgess, Barbie...the people at Moreland...*sniff*m00t*/sniff*. At this point I think this story could be completely re-cast and I wouldn't miss anyone. That's not a good sign.

I found myself yearning for the chance to eavesdrop on the lives of in-game folks and reminiscing about the hacker's bulletin board...the underground message board where got to read email between the urban explorers...the e-zine...the hacked email from TerraShape and GanMed...the Moreland news. These are the places where the game came alive for me. We got to know all these facinating people and get wrapped up in their lives and loves and impending danger.

And oh, by the way...where are the women? We've got Ann Starling who is dead and Amanda Graves who is really A Man Ed Vargas. I've got my eye on Lucinda as being a baddy (please) but only because of the trace amount of reference to her on the Tomorrow's Talk employee list [Lucinda's Problems Resolved]. Maybe Tara, who actually has some backstory, will turn out to be worth knowing.

Not being a fan of pre-games, it's disturbing that I'm beginning to wish that what we have so far is a pre-game and that we are about to embark on this wonderous ride that we'll be raving about for some time to come.

You don't feel attached to Ron?! The poor guy has had to go into hiding!

I know a lot about Ann from the book now, I even know that her mother lived close to me in Manchester, England. Smile

As for memorable characters well, who knows where this story is going so far, I think we'll have to wait 'til the end before we start making any judgements on how well the characters have been developed.

Well actually, Ron gave up on his love (fiancee) in order to have a job, so perhaps he's not such a good guy himself. Either that, or its supposed to make us feel sad for him because he had to give her up for something that would let him buy food.

How well do you know people on the internet that you've never met in person and have had little interaction with except to ask questions about a murder?
