[QUESTION][SPEC]Candidate for what?

This is a simple one; having listened to candidate (a reversed version can be found here (Thanks hitman23) an obvious question arises.

Obviously a candidate is being proposed, but a candidate for what? Being a Spartan?

NB: For those who may want to SPEC that the candidate is Janissary James, please read HitsHerMark's post here. Then if you still want to SPEC...prepare to eat trout.
Very Happy

sophia

I think the candidate is Sophia and she is being recruited to spy on someone, most likely Kamal. I have a vague feeling that Aiden may be a set up guy too, that is, a spy of some kind and not just a gangster-- but I am still thinking about it.

For some reason I was thinking 'candidate for an AI personality template', because a slighty unfashionable scholarship student sounds like a good source for one, but the timeline's all wrong for it to be any of the AIs in the story.

. . . What about a candidate for a mother for Janissary?

Probably not a SPARTAN, the candidate seems to be for espionage work, and SPARTANs aren't well ... stealthy. Maybe if there is some new breed, perhaps, but then it would seem candidates would be chosen when they're quite young, not from school.

Replacement for Cpl Janet perhaps? Maybe this is also meant to tie into the GOM storyline to give us a backdrop for their work. Now we know they don't just listen, they actively spy.

Based on the content of candidate, the key_lime -> candidate act occurs after the beginning of the axon waves. Additionally, the candidate is a "recruit" and a "scholarship girl", and the purpose for which recruiter is speaking to pie_lover is because [SPEC] he's looking for a "detective." [/SPEC] (the recruiter uses the word "detective" to describe the candidate).

I would say "mother for Jannissary" is unfounded.

Respectfully disagree.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
According to canon (Halo: The Fall of Reach) John 117 (Master Chief) was ordered on his first mission to use stealth as a means of entering the asteroid base and securing the leader. It wasn't until the primary mission was achieved that the requirement for stealth was compromised. At which point, the SPARTAN strike force used maximum collateral damage [i.e., blowing up the hanger, and depressurizing it to ...] sow sufficient confusion to allow an escape.

Bet that as it may, it's hardly "detective" work, as indicated by the candidate.wav ... this girl isn't being chosen for ability to perform covert ops, it's her ability to blend in unnoticed and observe scientifically. And from what we know of Morelli - that probably means on -our- ships, not Covenant. A SPARTAN would a) have a very hard time travelling around ONI without being flagged and b) is training overkill unless they're planning on assasinating/kidnapping/blowing up small planets.

They don't seem to be looking for supercyberninjas ... they seem to want moles, plants, observers, etc.

And having listened to it again, I'm doubly sure it's not Jan James. Or probably Sophia. They don't seem to go ... unnoticed.

I was disagreeing with your statement that SPARTAN's are not stealthy.

They are, when they need to be. I was not clear in my first message. Confused

[Wild Spec]

The "old man" .wav files and the "key_lime"+"candidate" files could easily
be after the original .wav files that feature Kamal, Jersey, and Jan.

So here comes the wild spec.

The Apocolypso, containing the Operator, the Flea, and an unknown
Artifact which may or may not contain the Sleeping Princess, comes
screeching through Earth's atmosphere after the Jersey, Kamal, and
Jan episodes.

It crashes and somekind of "strange time shift" causes the whole
Melissa/ILB fiasco. We have no idea what the reprecussions of that are
but I believe we can assume that they're not good.

In the game's future, the crash site of the Apocolypso is examined
and the Artifact is found. Adding together the troubles caused by
Melissa and research of the Artifact the conclussion is Time Travel.

In this case, the "candidate" is someone who needs to find out something
that has to do with the Apocolypso. The man describes her as someone
who see's normal things but views them like a scientist. That doesn't
sound like a Spartan but fits the bill for an AI.

To try to fix whatever mess this whole Apocolypso/Melissa/ILB problem:

1. They get the girl
2. Make an AI template from her
3. Use the Artifact to throw her back through time
4. Have her find the details that lead to the crash of the Apocolypso

In this case, I guess, the candidate is Durga.

[End Wild Spec]

Do I believe it. No.

There's abit of cognitive dissonance that I'm experiencing. There's a fundamental question that needs to be resolved here.

The candidate and other spy work seems to revolve around pretty big humint. They need someone who'll have intimate dealings with the quary. But, how does that work with the Covenant. Sure signit makes perfect sense. But that seems more like what Melissa does, being good with languages and decryption.

In the end, who are these people spying on?

Other humans makes the most sense.

Which makes things much more endlessly complicated.

Chaotic_Mind,

I also think that the spying must be on humans but who?
Who (and why) would the "candidate" spy on then if she
wasn't Durga?

I mean look:

1. Someone is spying on the two gentlemen in key/candidate
2. SP is spying on the Queen and PF
3. Someone is spying on the Cantankerous Old Man
4. Durga is spying on Kamal et al and Jan et al
5. Someone is spying on Durga and Jersey
6. We're spying on everybody

Really, whose left to spy on?

We don't have any reason to think the candidate would be spying on anyone IG. The Radio unit seems to spy on ONI itself, so she'd probably be a plant on some ship out there to keep tabs on itself. The GOM, et al don't even seem aware of anyone IG outside of the Apocalypso.

The "candidate" segment of the file suggests that Durga, the AI, had a personality map of an inquisitive scholarship student. Remember in the Jersey1 compiled file - one of the first things Durga says is that she she can't remember who she is etc. She also said:

"What are you?" "I like to find things, I think I like to find things out."

"I'm going to call you Durga." "But what if that's wrong?"

In addition - I think this is the beginning of Cortana.

Durga + Jan = (early vers.) Cortana + Master Chief ?

Anytime that you have one person planted in a group of other people
for the purpose of finding something out or reporting back, that's spying.
For political reasons you might call it "detective" work but changing the
doesn't change it's nature.
