[META] Visual Confirmation

I am going to attempt to take a picture at my school near the Arts payphone. I am going to see if she'll accept it. >_>

Are you definitely, 100% going to take the McDonald's? I'm kind of busy.

As per the norm, swamped at work today, so the only one I'm going to be able to make is Cabrillo. I plan on leaving here at 4PM, so should get there in plenty of time.

I figure I can do my programming homework up there whilst waiting for the phone to ring... and take a picture of myself doing it (programming AND answering phones Smile )

Stupid boyfriend stayed in class ;_;

However! He sent an email to Melissa trying to get the USD axon switched with an axon at CSUSM. So there is good news.

Kamen: I am going to make your photo with the axon my new work wallpaper.

Update from the field

Sorry to intrude, but I don't know which threads people are reading.

Melissa asked someone in the field to relay this information to the rest of the crew:

1. There will be a reward for the picture with the most rank and file crew members in it.
2. All that the rank-and-file pictures require is salutes at a payphone.
3. Melissa wants to bring Dana into the fold. She said that Dana would respond well to kindness.

I just saw what was either a very amusing accident or the greatest phone-block EVER at 14:33. It's going to need some narration. Stay tuned. It has a moral.

A Cautionary Tale.

2004/10/22 14:33 perimeter_alarms: COLD

Location: San Diego, CA (Northside McDonald's)

Reason for failure - Either:
- Unfortunate inexperience
- Greatest c***-block ever

I rolled in to the McDonald's with ten minutes to spare. I was actually surprised I made it, work was difficult to get free from.

As usual, I checked for likely beekeepers. I spotted two at a table outside who I had not seen before--not surprising, since most of my axons were alone. So this was a pleasant deviation. I didn't want to ruin their fun, so I picked up a drink with those crack-laced Monopoly game pieces, took it back to my car, and kicked back to watch the fun while reviewing my papers. Watch check: 14:30 Crew Time.

(No, really. I have it timed exactly.)

I look up, and these two are by the phone, kind of hovering, not really owning the space. One's playing with a phone, possibly planning for pictures. They seem to be ready, so I turn my attention to my stuff.

Peripheral vision catches something to my left. I turn my head slightly, and this guy in a white polo is jogging in. It looks like he's coming up the hill from the gas station. He comes to the phone, talks to the two briefly. I assume he's with us. Crew Time: 14:31.

...and then he picks up the phone, and starts to make a call.

I nearly rose up from my seat in horror, because I know down to the second when the call comes in, and this guy is seriously tempting Fate. Not only does he start talking, but the two who are *there* seem perfectly fine with it. They continue talking, and so does he. I'm watching my watch now. 14:32...and...14:33. I look up again, groaning mentally, and the guy is still talking. The other two look a little antsy now, but don't seem very motivated...14:34, and now the pantomine is darkly amusing. One guy gestures to the phoner, who is waving them off like he's fine, he's fine...

14:35. She's not calling now, for certain.

The guy finally gets off the phone and jogs back down the hill. One of the two walks casually over to the phone, looks at the time, looks at the phone, picks it up like he expects it to start breathing again...they talk a bit more, and then he *spikes his drink cup* in frustration. I laugh in spite of myself as he then kneels in front of the phone, doing the 'whyGodWHYYYYYY?' routine...but it's not funny, really, in retrospect.

They slowly shuffle off stage, and I gather up my papers and
head back to work, where I see perimeter_alarms ended up 9/10.

Now, some morals. I hope nobody minds. Especially you two, if/when you read this:

1) KNOW THE TIME

Obviously, if you're going to answer an axon you should get there early, as these guys did. If you do, though, you had *better* know when the call is coming and be prepared before that happens. There was not even any concern (from my point of view) until after the time had passed.

2) OWN THE PHONE

Don't be wishy-washy about your ownership of the phone booth. If you're going to hang around off to the side somewhere, so be it, but when it gets down to the last couple of minutes, you had better be firmly in possession of that thing. Scan the phonebook like you're looking something up. Pretend to read the charges. Hold the tongue down like you're trying to recall the number. It doesn't matter, but *act like you're using it*!

3) BE A BAD SAMARITAN (to outsiders)

I don't know what happened. Maybe the guy said his car was busted, maybe he just wanted to make a call. Hell, maybe he was trying to c***-block them. They fell for it, whatever it was--and when I say 'fell', I mean they did not say something like:

- 'I'm actually expecting an important call in the next couple of moments, do you mind waiting just a bit?'

- 'I'm sorry, I really need this phone right now. I'll be done soon.'

- 'You don't need to answer the phone if you're with us.'

That's part of owning the phone, but it's just as important.

4) DON'T ASSUME EVERYTHING'S ALL RIGHT

This is for me and other experienced people who don't mind stepping back and letting others make calls:

I *assume* by now that people know what they're doing, even if I haven't seen them before. I guess that's because I'm a little older than the average ILBer, and I assume the preparedness of people playing. Don't.

I'm telling you, what worked for me is this: Someone approaches the phone, and just tell them, very authoritatively, "These phones don't work."

Amazingly, the person will invariably take what you say as gospel. I mean, why would a stranger lie about something like that?

Heh. I've done that before (not for this), but that works as long as the phone doesn't ring behind you, whereupon you spin around and snatch it up screaming 'Hello?! Hello?! OMG COVENANT!'

Major suckage for me... got stuck at work and won't even make the Cabrillo axon. Someone go get it!

Guess I'll have to find a payphone and take a pic by it later...

As I said yesterday, my boyfriend submitted an axon in north San Diego county. Cal State San Marcos, to be precise. The phone is on the first floor of the Arts building by the elevators.

He said he hasn't heard anything positive or negative from Melissa, and he sent it around 2-3pm yesterday.

The coords he gave her were 33.12819 -117.16113, so keep a look out. Smile

On a lighter note... Nuriko, how was Mr. Moore? Very Happy

An hour late! Wink It was a good time. I was ticked because they confiscated cameras there, and we lined up next to payphones. Opportunity snatched away by The Man!
