[question] Why does the Pious Flea want stuff built?

Okay, so trout me quick here and lock it up if this is somewhere else and please show me where cause I used search and I must be horrible with that tool or something. Anyways:

From SP:

reveal:
!law master-sector
master-sector:deploy:
seek
behold
reveal
master-sector:grope:
!hndshk extern
!seek transmit proc
master sector:
surg:
!triage transmit proc

So you got her to build stuff for you! You honey-tongued little bloodsucker, you.

Okay, so she's building roads? Maybe something else, both ways, what would the flea want built? And why would he need roads, what is his purpose other than SEEK THE TRUTH REVEAL THE TRUTH etc. etc., what the heck is he really doing.

If he's enemy spyware he'd want to transmit the data he has back home.

perhaps to further invade and gain control.

or perhaps to broadcast a signal to an awaiting army ~500 light years away?

potential troutage concealed within..

i like the idea that, if this is tied to the Halo universe, we are somehow responsible for the Covenant invasion. It's kinda hard to tie-in in places, but i was thinking while reading over the log on theBruce of all the stuff from the site, that the spider Melissa talks about, is gathering information from her, but also tying to reconstruct her. Before the crash, she says about a possible Covenant virus. Was thinking that the spider doing all this could be the virus, retrieving her information and trying to broadcast it back to the covenant, as the AI is a vital piece of equipment (Cortana in Halo).
If so, is the information we're being given, all part of the process of communicating it back to the covenant?
bah, i'm gonna get trouted big-time for this one.

I don't know if anyone has noticed this yet, but the little column on the right side of Dana's blog has been updated and it apparently confirms that the roads are the axons.

Quote:
The Operator has started communicating again. It's constructing hundreds of "roads" out of the 'I Love Bees' server. The roads all lead to payphones. And the phones are ringing.

If I'm reading this right, then this means that the Pious Flea is the one telling the Operator to set up the phone calls. Am I the only one who thinks we're being manipulated by the Flea?

Trout me if necessary.

[SPEC]You know, a while back (When the word Bee wasn't forsaken at HBO) I had a theory that no one really paid attention to.

The books (and video game) both show that AFTER she's extracted from the Halo core - Cortana is odd; she's twitchy, suspicious, anxious, scared and in the books - down right cold hearted. This isn't the Cortana from the Pillar of Autumn!

I theorized that a FORERUNNER virus infected her while she was in the memory core of Halo. Or something along those lines, some programming line, or a virus or some malicious software - was eating away at her - giving her a dual personality. When I say dual personality, it was in reponse to her two different overall attitudes in the book. When she was a b****, she was a b****, when she was nice - she was nice.

It seemed like she was schizo, or bi-polar but it was clear to me something was wrong with her... even the MC notes this in the book "First Strike".

Could it be that Melissa is Cortana? She's been fragmented by Forerunner trojan horses and is now under attack by MORE spyware?

[/SPEC]

I think it's about time to revisit those Cortana Letters...

The Cortana from the Letters was basically Durandal with a different name, so I doubt there's any connection to the Letters.

Cortana definitely was wierd after being in the core, and there might be something to that. Guilty spark's response was along the lines of "a construct in the core? this is unacceptable.' Perhaps the reason that such a thing was "unacceptable" was because the forerunner restricted AI from it and 343 guilty spark is programmed that way? Also, when considering all of this business with AI, i dont think we can forget our freind guilty spark. After the credits roll by on halo u do see guilty spark floating in space. Did he crash land on a nearby planet after the destruction of the halo? Also the mention of a virus being in the core and attacking cortana made me think of deus ex and ghost in the shell for some reason. In both of those there is the idea of AI merging. Could there be some sort of AI merge going on? maybe already happened with cortana akin to daedalus and icarus merging to make helios on DX?

I think this thread has become off-topic, but oh well.

I just wanted to say that, I wonder if this game will help understand something with Halo 2, or if Halo 2 will help understand something in this game. Or neither.

I personally would like it if Halo 2 added to this game, rather then the other way around.

You're right, it isn't. However, the reason why that happened (from what I have heard from people who have read the books... I havn't, yet.) Is that AIs have this nasty habit of expanding (hoarding) into the space that they can use.

Given a large infrastructure of computing power below them, they will eat it all up. Furthermore, as they learn more, they start to go crazy. This is why the lifespan if an AI is limitede to 7 years. beyond that, they know too much and lose it. That is what happened to Cortana in Halo. She went into the halo core, expanded a bit too much, and now she is losing it.

Melissa was mentioned in one of the sound clips/transcriptions as having existed in "the future" as a ships AI. She had intercepted a covenant transmission, then thought that she may be infected with something (IMHO, it was the PF). Lastly, Cortana and Melissa seem to be different specializations of AI. Cortana is tactically minded, while Melissa (from all accounts except what is happening in our-time) is more analytical, possibly being a research or scouting AI.

Nice SPEC, but I highly doubt it.

I'd like to clarify this.

So called "Smart AIs" have a limited lifespan due to the fact that they can create new 'neural' pathways in their memory core. This means that over time they literally end up "thinking thamselves to death". Due to the fact that Cortana downloaded(?) so much data from Halo - Information on the Covenant, as well as the Forerunners - she has effectively shortened her lifespan considerably.

Also her memory was so full that she had very little processing space left available to run programs. This left her 'twitchy'. Imagine a PC with little processing power, the visuals you see on your moniter are jerky, sudden (even, dare I say, 'twitchy').

I don't believe that she was cold hearted so much as she was using her emotional sub-routines less to try to conserve memory. And she's obviously suspicious of the Covenant AI on board the ship that they stole, I mean, that's only logical.

All of this is documented in The Flood and First Strike, but due to not having the books with me, I cannot currently quote specific passages.

I hope this clears thing up a bit, I'll edit in some quotes when I get the books again.

Great... If that's the case...

Melissa is creating Axons (transmitters) all over the US, with the "roads" being her neural pathways, we are (in effect) currently acting as dendrites (recievers)... So, while our technology is primative by comparison, it is possible that Melissa is creating a neural network that could end up being global in scale.

Particularly if she adds one or more new forms of communication to her bag of tricks. (Calling us at home, or on our cels, emailing us, radio, etc.)

If anything, she'll go nuts (or even more nuts then she is now) faster because our technology is so primative. (As she would probably need more connections to run functions that would hardly take up any space at all on a system that she was built for.)
