 		[SOLVED] [EMAIL] From UM 9-1-04 "Mail Virus" story

I feel it is vital to inform all of my friends about this. I have seen
warnings like this from all corners of the U.S.

This is an alert about a virus in the original sense of the word . . . one
that affects your body, not your hard drive.

There have been 23 confirmed cases of people attacked by something by the name of The Klingerman Virus, a virus that arrives in your real mail box, not your e-mail in box. Someone has been mailing large blue envelopes, seemingly at random, to people inside the US. On the front of the envelope in bold black letters is printed, "A gift for you from the Klingerman Foundation." When the envelopes are opened, there is a small sponge sealed in plastic. This sponge carries what has come to be known as the Klingerman Virus, as public health officials state this is a strain of virus they have not previously encountered.

When asked for comment, Florida police Sergeant Stetson said, "We are
working with the CDC and the USPS, but have so far been unable to track
down the origins of these letters. The return addresses have all been
different, and we are certain a remailing service is being used, making our jobs that much more difficult."

Those who have come in contact with the Klingerman Virus have been
hospitalized with severe dysentery. So far seven of the twenty-three
victims have died. There is no legitimate Klingerman Foundation mailing
unsolicited gifts.

If you've received an oversized blue envelope in the mail marked, "A gift
from the Klingerman foundation", DO NOT open it. Place the envelope in a
strong plastic bag or container, and call the police immediately before you
do anything else. The "gift" inside is one you definitely do not want.

I received an email from a friend who has a cousin employed by The National Guard in New York. They have been meeting with government officials just about every other day. It seems that 7 people have died when opening an envelope addressed "From Me to You" He told her to place any envelope such as this in a zip lock bag and call the police. DO NOT OPEN IF YOU RECEIVE A PACKAGE SUCH AS THIS. This is not a legend - this actually came from my personal friend's COUSIN. The public has not been notified because they don't want people to panic yet. They are verifying that these were isolated situations - if that verification does not come forth - they will alert the nation. So just beware. My personal thoughts are not to open mail from an unknown sender or one that you don't recognize. Unfortunately we are living is times LIKE THIS!!! Be blessed.

PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU CARE ABOUT.

Advice for those wishing to learn: One cannot change the general statistics of Asia. Instead, take up the decorative arts which are so helpful with child rearing and home care of the sick. Other social problems & services are also a strong force in promotion of health. It's no use to learn the creeds and catechisms of monocotyledons; that education is better spent learning about buildings for education and research. American or Canadian literature in English has strong roots in classical Latin grammar, and both subjects are a sound basis for applied psychology.

 		No lucky dates this time so I don't really know how to decode this one. Anyone have a bible handy? I don't. Sad Which is why I'm going to hell. Twisted Evil

Taking the bible citations and doing the same thing we did with the dates you get: "bfov2p"

Tried www.urbanmythology.net/bfov2p.html and www.urbanmythology.net/legends/bfov2p.html on a hunch and no dice.

 		The last paragraph didn't seem to fit. I did some Googleing and came up with some numbers, but I don't know what they mean.

 		Nice first post Viking! I'm intrigued by this, thinking it can't just be a coincidence. The last para has nothing to do with the original myth. Here's what I've tried (spoilered in case it does actually turn out to be useful Wink)

I tried using the numbers as para/letter (using Nog's handy tool) but came up with: baaccbbbbarb.

Not sure if it means anything or if it could be code for something else. The 'r' looks a little out of place, so i may double-check that one.

EDIT - there is an a quite close to the r, so it could be an error and be baaccbbbbaab.. what sort of code could this be?

I thought I would see how the bible passages fit into the dewey decimal system and although there is nothing immediatly visible the results were interesting.

727 building for education and research
720 architecture
216 good and evil
210 natural theology
414 phonology (study of speech sounds)
737 numismatics and sigillography (study of the collection of coins, medals paper money and signs and sigils)

With all the a's and b's I first thought it could be a bacon code, but the c's and the fact that the total number of letters weren't a multiple of five made the bacon code not applicable.

So I took out the c's and made the string 10 letters: baabb bbaab. This didn't lead anywhere, because bbaab has no letter in the original bacon cipher...

Tried inversing the a's and b's, then abbaa aabba means: NG. "NG", in some TV circles, is lingo for "outtakes" (NG meaning "not good). But urbanmythology.net/ng.html yields nothing.

It looks like those c's do mean something afterall.

oh, and I also tried urbanmythology.net/baaccbbbbaab.html (nothing)



Just throwing out my failures so everybody else need not waste their time.


Last but not least, this really should go to the Puzzle forum.

 		For completeness, in chat last night we tried using base 3 then converting to base 10, this gives the following:

Which doesn't seem to help much. No such page on UM either.



Anyone got any good ideas? Surely there must be some puzzle here. Also I agree this should be in Puzzles, could someone who has the capability move it?

 		Using the numbers above in the spoiler, I tried something similar to Nog's program that I wrote, and I came up with a different string

Before I verified it, I thought it could have been a
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Vigenere cipher because it has 3 characters "a", "b", and "c".

But after trying it myself, I got:
baaccbbbbagB


This could still be a key to some cipher-text though highly unlikely.

What I mean is say AMANDAGRAVES + the string above could be something encoded.

 		OK it looks like this isn't a cipher problem. And I'm the last one working on the day before a three day holiday. So I got to thinking about Dewey...

and the Dewey beats Truman headline popped out. Is this to mean there is something fishy with the newspaper article we have?

Other tie ins might be the Nov 3 1948 date of the headline, or Thomas E Dewey's full name. Just throwing things out there...

 		Just on a lark, I decided to just replace all of the words with thier DD system numbers, however that didn't seem to reveal anything. But I'll post it here incase someone else sees something.

Advice for those wishing to learn: One cannot change the 315. Instead, take up the 745 which are so helpful with 649. 363 are also a strong force in 613. It's no use to learn the 238 of 584; that education(370) is better spent learning about 727. 810 (or Canadian?) has strong roots in 475, and both subjects are a sound basis for 158.

I don't think "Amanda" is telling us about her/himself - I think he/she is trying to point the finger at the real culprit.

SPEC: We still haven't found the link between Dream Projector and House of Dread....could Dr. Shoemaker have been anywhere near CMH in the spring of 2003?

SPEC: Could the second part of the email a key to the name of this person? What "her"s have we seen: Ann Starling, Lucinda @ TT, Tara @ Goldmine Hotel?
