[SPEC/META] The Axons And Their Point

Okay, being an Aussie I can't exactly answer phones, so you can imagine my frustration in finding out we have another massive list of phones to answer (Click Here). It's got to the point I think this is insane. How many phones are we going to have to answer?

Well, I came up with a theory that the axons all add up to 777, so we don't actually have to get them all. Counted all the axons up to now, and was seriously disappointed. Counting this new group, we're nearing the 900-axon mark. This says to me that we're going to HAVE to answer 777 phones.

Now, we're only into our 4th list of axons, and it's become blatantly obvious that people are getting tired of answering phones. People are taking days off work or school to answer these things, and they just keep on coming.

Unfortunately, it seems we're stuck with them until the big 777.

Now, DorkMaster rants about it in this topic, that being ILB being an 'Alternate Reality Story' and not a game at all. At first, I was disagreeable, but now it's completely and utterly stupid.

I really do believe that this new group of phones will be a complete and utter failiure. How many of you that have been answering phones can truly say they aren't tired of taking days off work/school to answer a phone for 30 seconds of voice? If you can say 'Yes, I'm not tired', then will you be around the time we hit 777?

As I write this, the axon ammount stands at 308. We're not even half way to 777 yet, and judging from the evidence (nearing 900 axons), the PM's are giving us space to answer all 700 odd.

The Total Axons So Far:
-If the currently missing times do not appear: 873
-If the currently 'missing' times appear: 897

Okay, first off I see nothing speculative about your post save that you don't think we will get this set done. IMO it should have been along the lines of what DorkMaster wrote which is [META] Rant:

Next is, since you are an Australian, you can't really help out, other than finding the locations, and putting the wav files together. For this I am very sorry. It sucks, and the PMs should probably place phones outside the nation, but they aren't.

As for being tired of it, maybe I'm alone in this, but so far, I've taken the time out of my days to ride around Washington DC on a bicycle, going to points, twice. I can say that I like it, and it's a thrill... first off, there's the thrill of trying to get to a point on time... sometimes I have plenty of time to spare, but sometimes I don't. Then when I arrive to a site, I need to look around, find the phone. If I'm lucky, there's only one phone in the location, if not there could be a lot. Sometimes the challenge comes from the phone being in an odd location, like the current 11:01 PDT phone is down in a subway station. And once I settle on a phone or a set of phones there is the waiting... while it's kinda boring, if I'm not absolutely sure (i.e. I haven't been to this location before), I'll be standing by the phone, heart pounding, hand shaking, as I wait for the clock to count down to the minute, and wait for the phone to ring, praying nothing very loud happens so that I don't hear the ring. Assuming I get lucky and it rings, I pick up the recieve and wait for the voice to click in, and pray, once again, that nothing loud will happen, so I can hear whether Melissa will ask for real name or nickname.

In the end, this can be exiciting, but only for those who can get to phones. To me that's the only fault with it, that not everyone who's playing can be part of the action. While this is interesting, it is a bit unthoughtout that it excludes non-american players.

One big hole in this idea, and lots of other ideas I've seen going around about the 777 counter being axons we've activated. It's not. Cancelled Axons get added to the 777 counter as well...at least I know for sure that one did. I think more than one did.

The only axons that were cancelled were payphones that were either impossible to get to, or didn't exist. As far as I know, we've only had one cancelled axon so far, and that was added to the bar at the top. But all other unanswered axons were just archived and unadded. I personally am getting kind of bored with the payphone thing too, mainly because there aren't any points close to me, and the closest ones are all at times when I can't get there. I do think we will have trouble maintaining morale for answering these phones, especially if they keep staying in the same areas. If they move the axons around, or just find some new way of activating axons, like us calling Melissa, then it might start to get interesting again.

I believe only one did. We must distinguish between that one axon in San Francisco ("hi_aiden") that Melissa deliberately canceled -- which was added to our total/777 -- and all the others that she simply archived without us ever making contact.
