S&S Puppetmasters...

... definitely have a sense of humour.

The Hornchurch Star story re darkness at crossroads quotes a Frances Griffiths of Cottingley.

www.cottingley.net is just one of many sites telling the story of how, 87 years ago, Frances and her cousin Elsie produced photographs with "fairies" in them.

However, the 93535 Area Code on the weather map (clearly excerpted from an LA County Thomas Guide, Rand McNally's acclaimed street maps) pertains to Lancaster, California. I admire the nonagenerian's stamina in braving desert heat so far from her native Yorkshire. Plus of course, Frances's age obviously does not hinder from trying to blend in; although she's a little far north of the San Fernando valley and only a decade or so late. Don't ask me for what fountain of youth Frances's mother sold her soul, 'cos I don't want to know.

Bearing in mind this is my first ARG (if S&S can be deemed such), I'm not very impressed with the level of immersion. Or is this typical of ad campaigns that are this blatant?

Elaine aka Psemmusa

PS (Then there's the Hop Nevuel byline - Hop being a key ingredient of beers and Nevuel being Leuven backwards.)

PPS (Oh, and how about the most likely US candidate for Devil's Peak being in Oregon? I know, having lived in CA, that nearby can be anything within a two hour drive, but even so, Oregon to Lancaster scarcely qualifies...)

Looking at one of the posts about finding the significance of den hooren i decided to have a google fest and came up with the above. It seems Den Hooren is a brewery in Belgium, surprise, surprise but no obvious link to Stella.
Any ideas??

cheers blade x2x

yup it definitely looks like the 21st is going to be the go date... Twisted Evil
but i think theres a few more surprises to come. this whole "ui" "iu" thing is driving me insane. ive tried every other key combination and ive looked for questions which could possibly be answered "ui" or "iu" but so far no joy. the only thing me & skarob could come up with was "you and I", but don't know how that'd link in. hmmm...

Sorry to hear that I'm a contributing factor to the decline of your state of mental health. Oh well, there's always Prozac. Laughing

It's true, the only key combinations that will work are the following: IU, UI, iu and ui. If you take a look at the javascript function in the source code of the webpage you can see why this is the case. Btw, that's how I found this little anomaly.

I've also tried looking for questions/instructions which could be taken too "literally" and responded to by typing 'iu' or 'ui' on the webpages, but no luck here either. Maybe I just stumbled upon something before I was supposed to.

Cheers,

~Slithy

I've been lurking and catching up.

Not much to say other than the 93535 zip code for Lancaster, California matches up to the webcam pictures.

I live in Lancaster and there's no mistaking the desert landscape. Although, I don't know if 110th St East falls under 93535 or 93534.

Kirstenbaum do u think u could find the crossroads? that would be pretty immense Smile

ok just a quick hi before i register.

I found this whole HMFJ thing from a friend who wa hitting on a girl in liverpool. She was handing out badges with web site in as part of a stella promotion. Been trolling the web looking for further information, but as was stated above this appears to be the most advanced set of information in one place. Will have to wait till midnight to get access to the SS site proper as I only sent in my info this morning.

incidently it took me over an hour to read just the stuff in this post.

not really very helpful to the quest at hand, but Jon Harker appears to have been busy online.

Have been reading up on the runes that appear in the hornchurch star weathermap.

The first one is Rad. It is associated with travel, inner or outer. Rad is also linked to to mercury, which rules trade.

from a book of runes
Quote:
As the central meaning behind Rad is travel and communicatiion it also signifies the possibilty of the querent recieving unexpected messages that will alter the present situation in a surprising way.

the second rune is Ken. Its outer meaning is concerned with gifts. It is also a masculine rune, pertaining to a dominant person in a situation. Ken also has an inner meaning that concerns the aquisition of knowledge.

the third symbol, which is the only one in green, is rather odd. If we take away the "s" then we are left with the rune for Tir, who was the original creator in norse myth. Tir is concerned with an enterprise that will require a great deal of energy, specificaly....War. "Winning" is the clue to understanding this rune: blood may have to be spilt but victory is assured. If we couple this with the "s" over the top then it seems that, and this is just a guess, S&S will go to any lengths to complete a deal, the symbol looking rather like $. This leaves Jon Harker in a bad situation and may well explain the great lengths they have gone to to reaquire him.

the fourth symbol though baffles me. I'm sure I've seen it before. I checked out some stuff on alchemy and it's not a symbol of the heavenly bodies or anything else they used. I then thought that it might have been enochian, as no one is sure if the angels John Dee contacted with Edward Kelly were godly or satanic in nature, but it's not from their alphabet either.

I'm sure these symbols are important, but I can't seem to work out how or indeed why.

Sorry for the long post.

Has anyone tried doing any steganalysis on any of the Hornchurch Star images? I ran a program called "Stegdetect" on some of the images on the site and came up with two images that were apparently encrypted with something called "jphide".

The images that appear to have some steganographic content are: "firststory_inner.jpg" which is on this page: http://www.hornchurchstar.com/news_story1.php and "helpmefindjon_image.jpg" which is on this page: http://www.hornchurchstar.com/news_story3.php.

Could someone who is knowledgeable in steganography please check these files to see if they contain some encrypted messages? And if they are encrypted, please tell us what the encryted content is? Pretty please?

Thanks,

~Slithy

Darkman: Damn, had to look through a couple of books to get that info too....oh well.

Slithy: Downloaded JPhide and ran those images through it, it says there was no hidden content. Also have camouflage running which makes pics with hidden content read only and got nothing. Sad Maybe it was just reading them wrong.

well, I had a go at the assessment test and the highest I got was 74/46 or there abouts, can't remember the derivative.

Now I guess I have to wait like everybody else.

Thanks for checking that out digi. Very Happy

Darn, I was really hoping that there was something there. I'm getting a bit restless. BTW, I was using Stegdetect 0.4 if anyone is curious.
