I usually average saying the password 3 times or so. Speak clearly and slowly and wait 1/2 sec after Melissa asks the question before you start speaking.

I have only had to say Greene once. A few times when i said it twice, I was saying it at the same time as Melissa was saying, "Good." (Though for the fable ones, I sometimes said Apocalypso two or even three times).

I don't know how noisy it is where your payphones are, but many of the ones I have been at are extremely noisy. I cover the receiver with my hand and I speak very loudly, clearly, and deliberately. It has worked swimmingly.

Good luck!

Make sure to enuncinate the trailing "n" voice recognition has the hardest time with soft or sibilant sounds at the end of words.

Hey who got the 7:25 am polson MT axon. Anybody here?
Great job but I want to know about our other Montana Axon hunters. I'll probably hit the Stevensville axon on saturday just to give us one more axon in the count. Apartment squirrels was the first to unlock so I wanted to wait.

Question Does anybody know other forums or beekeepers sites I can check with to find the other mysterious axon hunters Question

That would be me. I got up early this morning to tag it. Polsons my hometown, and this is the third time I've got that axon. They like to put it at the Wal Mart payphone, but somehow I think the 4B's payphone would be more appropriate. (because it has bee in the name, Very Happy ) I just did some digging around, and saw you were talking about the Ronan payphone. I was up there when it first started ringing.. the GPS coords were pointing to the middle of the highway. I looked on both streets, inside businesses, and whatnot and was unable to find it. Disenchanted, I never tried looking for it again. The main reason is I'm carless, and making people bum me rides to look for imaginary payphones is a bit of a strech for most people. Laughing But I was so tempted to go there after Dana mentioned it in the Blog-- But I couldn't convince the higher powers to drive me out there again. Hehe.

I've been with this the entire time.. Just mainly posting on the Penny-Arcade fourms, and coordinating with them. I really should have done a search for "montana" here before, though, since this is where the action is. I'm with you on the notion that Mellisa is watching us.. I just don't know why there would be payphones in the middle of no where (Polson, Ronan) for no good reason. I've gone to ILB an innumerable amount of times, maybe even more before the payphones even exsisted. It could all be part of the game.

Thanks!

weephun, hmrpita & vortech: Thanks for the tips! It looks like all the Axons near me already have active sound clips, but I'm still going to tool around southern NJ & Philly this weekend so I can hear things for myself. I think it's safe to say this type of thing won't happen again, and I'd like to be one of the few people who actually answered a payphone to talk to a computer on the internet and discuss a video game that isn't out yet.

ps- Q: What is black & yellow and goes "zzub zzub"?

A: A bee flying backwards! HA!

Yeah, it's lame. But I've been dying to say it for weeks...

Purdue University (West Lafayette Indiana) Axon enhotenated.

ballet 14:41 PDT 40.427034 -86.911362 West Lafayette Indiana

She said something about thinking that no one was there. Is this normal for axons that were not enhotenated in round three?

Brainwave - yes, the phone call starts with statements of concern about hardware difficulties and staying in touch. Someone recorded (actually G4TV did too) the intro portion of the Melissa call used the first three weeks. This week's recording is a little different, evincing more suspicion about who is answering the phones. Then of course she questions our identities again. But if you got something different than that, do tell!

I got the 13:53/cheeleaders, so that's unlocked now. (Nice job, whoever got that other one--we needed two.) Of course, now I guess I can toss the nice transcription I made. Oh well. (It was hard to hold the phone, an umbrella, and write at the same time. Very Happy )

I only hottenttotenated 1 SF axon today.

Well, I hopped on the streetcar this afternoon and managed to get to the 16:55 knee_caps with an entire minute to spare! The time came, the phone did not ring. I counted about 15 seconds, then I picked up and Melissa was there. So, San Francisco has only 3 more to get:

8:33 apartment_squirrels
11:45 just_snacks
15:05 dark_genius

I think we will get them all. Woo and/or hoo!

But, wait, what about the Berkeley axons...

After getting the SF axon, I jumped on BART and headed over to the East Bay. I got off in Berkeley and Ariock picked me up and drove as fast as he could to the 6:23 thermostat phone. I jumped out, but we were one minute too late. Bang Head

The 6:41 thermostat phone was very close by, so we parked and went to it and waited, contemplating the Eritrean and Ethiopean restaurant across the street. I hottied it, and we flew out of there, since we had 5 minutes to go 5 blocks to the 6:47 thermostat pay phone. Ariock dropped me close by and I jogged over just in time to pick up the phone and convince Melissa that I was, indeed, a crew member. In the meantime, Ariock had found a place to park, so we walked one block to the 6:55 thermostat and this time Ariock did the honors and was quite persuasive when he enunciated "Greene" in his strong baritone voice.

Next, we hurried to the 7:01 clearly_a_glitch pay phone. Ariock waited in the car in a red zone, while I walked down to the phones. I had 2 minutes, so I retied my shoes for something to do. As I am looking down and adjusting the bow just right, I hear this woman (or man? or manwo? It was hard to tell) who is about 10 yards away from me, start screaming, "You *bleep*!!! You think you are so *bleeping**bleep*, you *bleeping**bleep!!!" And so on. I look up, thinking, "What did I do? Can't a girl tie her shoe at a pay phone in peace?" but I see that the object of this tirade was not me, but a man on a cell phone walking up
Martin Luther King Drive (which is the street the pay phones are on, the link notwithstanding, but please, check out the link and tell me what you think Wink ).
The Expletive Person goes away, the phone rings and I have a peaceful chat with Melissa.
Arrow This was an important one, since it activated the clearly_a_glitch .wav file. Very Happy

We then head up to the 7:09 clearly_a_glitch pay phones. Ariock drops me off and goes to find a place to park. There are 3 pay phones, I am 5 minutes early, and there are thugs and plug-uglies lurking all around me. Ariock arrives with one minute to spare, the left phone rings, I enhottentotenate it, we listen to the .wav file, then how much Melissa loves bees. We hang up and go get some well-deserved pizza and beer. Exclamation

Thank You Ranger D! Good luck tomorrow! There is an extremeley slight chance I can try for the 15:05 tomorrow (another phone that stubbornly does not ring).

9-16 report:

709/777 axons hot
23/29 comatas wavs live

Spreadsheet also lists critical axons now. I'll work on figuring out which ones have gone hot previously and get that posted soon.

EDIT: updated with Axon Progress graph (*thanks to catherwood). I also added predicted #s based on past performance. If we continue as we have in the past, we should make 777 before next Tues morning! Keep it up guys!

EDIT: 9-17-04 1:00PDT. Updated as of this time stamp. Figure we're about 1/2 way through the day and made new predictions based on that ... better get ready for round 5 guys Sad Anyway, also added total # of axons available on the graph to compare against how many we have acutally gotten. Next guarranteed update is Mon morning though I'll try to do something on it over the weekend.

EDIT: 9-20-04. Updated. Only missing wav is drink_the_beer. Posted new spreadsheet with new reply. Looks like my predictions were pretty close Smile

How to reach the end

EDIT: Note that if there is indeed another round of axons (as there now appears to be), these ideas are pretty moot.

Speaking of critical axons, I've had some odd thoughts about the endgame of our axon hunting:

We're trying to achieve two goals right now. On the one hand, we want to unlock all the .wav files on comatas.html. At the same time, we're trying to make the big counter reach 777/777. Ideally, we want to do both of these things. I have a concern about what the 'rules' are once we have successfully unlocked the .wavs.

Based on past precedent, even with all the .wavs unlocked, all the axons still cold in a round kept ringing (if they rang at all) until the next Tuesday, when a new round started. In the case of fable.html, we learned of a twist on this: If a given .wav group remained unlocked by Tuesday, its axons kept ringing until it was unlocked.

All these rules have applied when there was a following round of axons the next Tuesday. The question is, what will happen this coming Tuesday if (as many of us guess, there isn't a new round of axons (although wait ... EDIT ... maybe there is another round)? Will the remaining cold axons remain available to us, or will they be archived and stop being available? A related question is what will happen if we get all the .wav groups done before Tuesday? Will the axons remain available until Tuesday, or not?

These questions are important to think about if we want to get the counter to 777. Unfortunately, we don't have any way to know Melissa's rules for certain, all we can do is infer them from what we've seen so far. Given the disparities we've found between the number of phones we've correctly answered and the total on the big counter, I don't think any of us can say for certain what the rules here actually are.

It's for that reason that I'm going to suggest that it is to our advantage to leave at least one .wav group unfinished until the axon we get to finish it is the 777th axon. I know this flies in the face of our usual logic, but it is the only way to be certain that we achieve both of our goals (getting all .wavs and getting 777). Luckily, we may not have to do anything special to take this approach. We're having a lot of difficulty with drink_the_beer.wav it would seem, so I don't see us getting that one done anytime soon.[/i]

I've got 2 drink_the_beer axons near me, and I'm going to try to hit them on Monday. I missed today's chance thanks the the lure of sweet, sweet sleep.
