11:45 is hot

Got to the 11:45 just_snacks phone with less than a minute to spare. Luckily no one was at it, I knew exactly which phone it was. 11:45 is hot, and it looks like just_snacks is now available. Nothing unusual, as.....usual.

19:13, Glendale, California

<begin dramatic, patriotic background drumming>

Arrived at the Glendale Galleria over an hour early.
Scouted all 14 (not 12) pay phone locations on three different floors.
Tested 30 different pay phones for viability.
Received assorted strange looks from various uniformed figures, but not actually arrested.
Figured out which eight phones were listed on payphone-directory.
Figured out which three other phones were listed on payphone-project.
Found two phones that had the wrong numbers posted, so had no way to test them.
Found two more phones that would not accept incoming calls.
Found 14 phones that would accept incoming calls, but would not ring out loud.
Took copious notes.
Then contemplated which of the 14 locations to hover over this evening...

Decided to watch the bank of four phones in the food court, because they corresponded to the first four numbers listed in payphone-directory, and they all accepted incoming calls (although only two rang audibly).
Cursed the inherent noisiness of the casual diner.
Glared balefully at everyone who picked up a phone for the next twenty minutes.
Began largely unsuccessful effort to look physically imposing at 19:10:00.
Chased away three different people who looked like they might be thinking about maybe coming near one of the phones at 19:12:50, plus one small child who probably couldn't have reached the phones anyway but why take chances?
Waited until 19:13:20, and heard nothing from the two phones that rang softly but audibly.
Picked up the third phone, got a dial tone, hung up very quickly.
Picked up the fourth phone, heard nothing.
Said "Hello?"
Heard "I was starting to think no one was there."

GOTCHA!

(Yeah, I know "clearly_a_glitch" was already activated, but this axon is on the list for next Tuesday as well.)

Brookline, MA axon hot - such_pigs

Wanted to let the other Boston people know that it was indeed the payphone next to the shelter on the 'Inbound' side of the Brookline T stop that rang.

I was the only one that showed in the rain. Kinda scared that
1) The phone wouldn't ring, and
2) If it did, I wouldn't be able to activate the axon. I mean, I can't get the voice activation on my cell phone to recognize my own voice most of the time.

Anyway, one more axon hot.

Mike

The stevenville, MT axon that I activated last week is now busted. so unless they fix it or moved the axon to the next phone over that point is screwed. Anyway, at least I got my week's grocery shopping done and the apartment squirrels wav was unlocked early on. just pissed that I can't help more to get us to the magical 777.

mission accomplished

Just got back from answering the 14:33 wee_wee_wee. Thanks again for the advice on how to make Melissa understand what I said. Hopefully this phone will be used in the next round, and hopefully I'll be able to help out again.

picked up the so_dense 12:19 PDT 41.147517 -81.342883 Kent axon at Kent State... because 23,000+ students apparently can't be arsed to pick up the phone ringing* in the student center during the week Wink

* it's the bank of phones to the right of the main stairs, middle phone, on the same wall as the bookstore entrance.

I met with Angelo to cruise down to Chickasha, OK for the 12:51 hard_bargain axon. We made it to the site with about 40 minutes to spare (despite getting just slighty lost on the way there). The coordinates pointed us to an abandoned college dormitory that looked like it had just recently been vacated. We talked to a security guard that said that there was a payphone in there at one time, but it had been removed when they cleared the place out. Didn't find any other phones in the area, so the Chickasha axon is going to stay cold. Oh well. I wouldn't be getting the full experience if I didn't chase after the occasional failed axon. On the plus side, it was nice getting to know another Christian Halo geek. I'm beginning to think these ARGs are just a conspiracy to get us out from behind out computers and into the real world to talk to real people Smile

I'm headed out to those two MN drink_the_beer axons in the morning... I scoped out the 'most likely' candidates earlier this week, but I've been working almost every day since Sad

Now I Just gotta remember to set my alarm for a lot earlier than normal.

I've been looking for this phone for three weeks now, and cannot find anything. The coordinates mark an industrial scrap company, and they USED to have a payphone, but it's been disconnected. I've called the number that was used for that payphone, but it's not being used for anything else yet; it rings once (which is why Melissa is still calling it, I suppose), and then picks up with the disconnected message. No other business in the immediate area has or had a payphone. I've done all the searching I can safely do by myself.

As I said last week, this axon is NEVER going to be hot unless the coordinates are changed!

Thothone of the recipe3.html axons is also at the Univ. of Minnesota - probably not the exact same location, but definitely same area. (cranky_old_man 12:41 PDT 44.972570 -093.233780)

This is one that has been lingering since week before last.

Never mind - I found your posts about this one not being findable. Good luck on the drink_the_beer ones.
