[UPDATE] UrbanMythology.net 09/07-4

Hey everyone, three new myths.

First about a lady who was institutionalized for chewing on her arm.
http://urbanmythology.net/legends/gtllah.html

Next about a great deal on scorpions:
http://urbanmythology.net/legends/kc.html

And finally more about infrasound or something like the same:
http://urbanmythology.net/legends/ssf2.html

the last has a link to this sound clip:
http://urbanmythology.net/40hz.wav (included below)

#UH people spec connection on the first to Ann Sterling, and I was rather hoping to find something in the waveform or spectrograph of the sound, but I haven't yet, if it's there at all.

Below are the sound and a spectrograph of it, just for fun.

Already said this in chat, but B.S. (the submitter of the 40Hz story) could be Bill Stauffer.

I first heard about these geography based hums years and years ago. The first one I heard about was the Taos Hum. I've been through Taos once, and didn't hear it... then again, I was in a car doing about 60, so I wouldn't expect to.

Out of game also, but "Coherent 40Hz oscillation characterizes dream state in humans." http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=8446632

A puzzle thread on the wav file has been started here.

By the way, did anyone else notice a little boo boo on the update email?

I don't know, when I first saw "Reader B.S" I instantly thought it meant bulls**t .Oh well, the Stauffer spec seems plausible too.

Update from Amanda

There is a small update to the most recent urban myth with the 40mhz sound file.

http://www.urbanmythology.net/legends/ssf2.html

Quote:
9/12/04 Update - I received another note about this site from an anonymous reader, who states:

"I found the site that B.S. was talking about. It's all a load of crap, to be honest."

Unfortunately the e-mail didn't mention the URL for the site, so I'm unable to judge for myself. I looked around and found a bunch of sites about 40 hertz but nothing with that sound on it. Someone let me know if you find it, please.

I believe I found the site that reader B.S. is referring to:

http://www.fortyhertz.com

The 40hz.wav file is on that page and it's the exact one on the UM site. Whois info is also consistant with the fact that this game is in-game. And the site mentions a Ernst Shoemaker (father or Karl Shoemaker of Dreamprojector perhaps?).

I've emailed Amanda with the find. I also emailed the webmaster of the fortyhertz site.

(as to how I found it, I simple typed in www.fortyhertz.com , googling didn't come up with it at all)

This is interesting:
Quote:
The most rapid brain wave pattern is that of gamma, from about 30 Hz to more than 100 Hz. This is the pattern of intense concentration, as well as the "fight or flight" reflex. At higher levels, gamma is also associated with anxiety and paranoia

and this:
Quote:
Nobel Laureate Francis Crick, the codiscoverer of the DNA structure, has recently turned his attention to the brain. Professor Crick states that he believes that 40Hz pulses control visual mechanisms in the brain. When we focus our attention, certain neurons fire in a particular pattern that create a phase lock loop with neurons in other sections of the cortex. He amplifies his speculations in his recent book, The Astonishing Hypothesis: The Scientific Search for the Soul.

Another theory is that the 40Hz pulse is utilized normally by the brain as an acknowledge signal. As in one section of the cortex telling another "I have received, understood, and will store this information". As the 40Hz pulses are believed to lead to the synchronization and coordination of neurons assigned to the processing of incoming sensory stimulation, this leads to the speculation that 40Hz is required to modify the underlying structure of the brain. Put in "computerese," 40Hz may be the brain's "operating system" frequency.

Of the few things on that page, one (the chart of brainwaves) is an image that links directly offsite. I thought it was odd that the page designers were hosting an image elsewhere, so I went to check it out, and found what might be another in-game site: godmind.com. The usual GoDaddy/DomainsByProxy registration is present. An excerpt:
Quote:
The 40Hz Effect and the God Mind Phenomenon

by Dr. J. David Richardson, M.D., Ph.D

A paper to be presented at the 5th International Congress of Neuropsychiatry, INA / WFSBP,

Athens, Greece - 14-18 October 2004

As it happens there is a 5th International Congress of Neuropsychiatry in Athens next month, over those dates; they have a website here. However, according to the event program, no person by the name of J. David Richardson is scheduled to speak, and none of the described sessions sounds anything like the article posted on his site.

edited to add further details

Looks in-game. Great find. I noted all images were gifs except the button you click to hear the wav file. All four images are also all stored in /images/ which is blocked to public access. I looked at them in animation shop, but no hidden messages. The rotating crystal animation file is both mispelled and has an 01 at the end. I tried /images/crystal01.gif and chrystal02.gif, but found nothing. I viewed the source code. Again, no hidden messages, but it is obviously made by an editor. I guess all we get is the info and the email address. Someone tell Ed the web address.

Emailing the godmind guy gets an autoresponse... wasn't sure whether to put it in Interaction until we decide it's definitely in game.

Thanks,

J.D. Richardson

Okay, perhaps I am going mad here, since no-one in chat seemed to have a clue what I was saying. But isn't this:
Quote:

16) Gray, C.M., and Janitor, G., Synchronous oscillations in neuronal systems: mechanisms and function, J. Comput. Neurosci. 1 (1994) 11-38.

a bit of an ARG reference? I found the original reference on http://brain.web-us.com/40hz/ww116.htm and it has no Janitor, G. And it has the same background... hmmm Very Happy

EDIT: Another one?

22) Ikemi. A., Hon, A. and Hon, D., Psychophysiological effects of self-regulation method: EEG frequency analysis and contingent negative variation. Psychother. Psychosom. 49 (1988) 230-239

Now I'm looking at the godmind site. In the source, it is apparent that it was made by an editor. The EXACT same editor. Also, images are stored in the images directory like the previous site, and both images are gif files. It also gives an email address. Looks in-game... but not 100% sure. More of 80% sure. It is also very boring. Can someone paraphrase it?

Probably nothing...

Couldn't help but notice the similarity between God Mind and Gold Mine. Maybe just coincidence...
